Question for the Brits

reli - 2008-10-21 20:03

Why not allow American bidders on Ebay? Yes, shipping to the States is very expensive, but if you tell them upfront how much it will cost and they are willing to pay it, why not?

I'm not in the UK, but from my experience:

First of all, there are restrictions to a size of a package you can ship.

Second, I couldn't ever get an accurate estimate as to how much the shipping would be. They would give me one estimate - which I'd quote to a buyer, but when I get to the post office - I'd get a completely different shipping price. So every single time I ended up paying the difference out of my pocket.

And a couple of times my package was a little bigger than allowed by the rules, so the post office wouldn't accept the package at all - I had to go buy a smaller box and repackage everything - with less foam and bubble-wrap - and go back to the post office. Or in one sentence - major pain in the butt. I personally wouldn't sell anything overseas anymore - it's not the matter of how much it costs to ship - but how much EFFORT it takes to ship. Not worth it to me.

So judging by the responses, the question should be - why don't Americans ship overseas Big Grin

chancenellie - 2008-10-23 14:54

Well Dr vladi,it seems that it is cheaper for you guys to send to us than it is for us to send to you,all of us members here dont have a problem with the packaging cos we all do it so well, its just the damn cost. Its a shame cos so many more deals could be done without the UK's rip off cost of shipping

I always do.........I figure it gets me more bidders and increases the final bid amount.

Sometimes I eliminate certain countries though, like Australia, that have weird size limitations. And there are a few countries whose citizens I don't trust but that's another story lol...

Me as i am not getting any younger and yadda
and if they have something over there that i want and I cannot or have seen one of whatever over here or nobody is selling one over there then i'll pay whatever the cotten-picking bleeping shipping charge is from waaay over there NO Problem as to me its just $$$ Wink and $$$ is what makes the world go round I Agree

Yes, Australia - they do have some pretty weird limitations

Yes-seems our Australia post has the following limits:
Definition of an International Parcel
An international Parcel is any article that is is not an Air Mail Letter.

Weight of an International Parcel
The maximum weight of an International Parcel is 20kg, but it may be lower depending on the destination country or the International Post service used to that country. Refer to your country in the International Post Guide for details.

Size of an International Parcel
The length of the longest side of a parcel must not exceed 105cm.
The girth of a parcel must not exceed 140cm.
Some examples of how to measure the length and girth follow:

Cylinders
If the parcel is a long cylinder, its axis (length) must not exceed 105cm and its circumference (girth) must not exceed 140cm.

Boxes
If the parcel is box shaped, its length (its longest dimension) must not exceed 105cm. The girth, measured around the two other dimensions, must not exceed 140cm.

Irregular shapes
If the parcel is an irregular shape, its length is the distance between the two furthest-apart points on the surface of the article, and must not exceed 105cm. The girth, measured around the thickest part of the article at right angles to its length, must not exceed 140cm.

Minimum Size of a Parcel
The girth of a parcel must be at least 16cm. For example, a broom handle or a pencil shaped parcel is not acceptable. If the parcel is box shaped, both its length and width must be at least 5cm.
