What's teh worst thats happend to you?

charlesdickens - 2008-01-10 12:45

It seems like everyday there is another horror story about thievery and bad packing jobs. What's the worst experience you had in buying a BBX and how did you deal with it

kid.sensation - 2008-01-10 12:48

honestly..until now i received EVERY single box as described!!

so the worst thing which happens to me is that there is some static now and then on a arriving box which is no big deal..or missing powercords, which of course is no deal too.I have more cords than boxes Big Grin

lil.ange - 2008-01-10 12:54

bidded on a box and lost it by $5 wile i was at work.

enskanker - 2008-01-10 12:56

Won a box that had a dead muskrat in it.

- 2008-01-10 13:24

gee how did the muskrat get in and or how long was it living there ?

- 2008-01-10 13:34

Often members (such as myself) don't want to remember and think of the bad things that happened to our boxes...i've got a few stories but i don't feel like going back and re-living the nightmares all over again Laugh Out Loud

A WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

enskanker - 2008-01-10 14:19

Really, my worst story is when I accidentally threw some parts in a dumpster behind my favorite
chinese restaurant.

daiwa - 2008-01-10 14:38

Oh, Lawd, I think we know where this is going...

masterblaster84 - 2008-01-10 14:46

Well that's easy because it just happened a few months ago. I spent $220 on a TRK-8600 that was quoted as being "NICE" and I received a barely functional parts box that was as close to useless junk that it could be and still power up. Because of circumstances (partly my fault) I was unable to do anything about it, I had to eat the box. It's currently in the rafters wrapped in plastic and waiting to be parted out or thrown away. We have a thread in this forum about this useless con man and former member.

i just had to bite the bullet, absolutely no protection when wiring money orders overseas. i broke a window out in my house, i was steamed Red Face
but you learn from your mistakes. seller had over 200 positive feedbacks w/100% positive, so you never know who you're getting involved with

My worst experience just happened TODAY! I've never had the experience of getting something damaged in transit, etc... because I only buy locally, things I can see and handle before buying, and I bring them home myself.

I usually "stockpile" them for a few days or so before bringing them home together, though, as I rent a van to transport them, and it works out a lot cheaper per-box this way. The dealers I buy from and I know each other, and they make sure to keep track of what I buy and keep it safe until I pick it up ... until today, that is.

My CONION C-100f now has a feature that it didn't have when I bought it two days ago; there is a piece about 3-1/2 inches long and maybe 1 inch high, along the lower left bottom edge (inf from the corner, near the woofer) that is broken off. Red Face Mad Red Face

Those who read my post about finding it may recall that it was on a trolley with other gear on top of it, when I saw it and bought it. The guy said he'd put it safely aside for me, when I bought it. I was in a hurry, so I didn't wait around to see it done. I trusted him and the others there; this is the same place and the same guy I got my (Marantz) Standard PMS-6000 turntable box from, and he kept that safely for me (and a few other purchases on other occasions), so I wasn't worried.

Now no one seems to know --or at least no one will admit knowing-- when or how the damage occured. The WORST part is that they must have thrown out the broken piece (probably hoping I'd think it was that way and I hadn't noticed-?) so I have to manufacture my own repair (probably mold one from dissolved plastic shavings like in the thread here on S2G), rather than simply glue ("plastic weld") the broken piece back in.

I wasn't too bothered about it being missing the tape deck door - most of them are, anyway - but this is different. This is real DAMAGE, not something that can be just cleaned off or polished away or replaced with a spare part. Big sigh... definitely the worst damage /loss /disappointment I've experienced in boombox-buying so far.

I console myself by thinking that even with serious battle scars, at least it IS still a Conion, more or less.

djyetix - 2008-01-11 04:27

My worst event happened around one year ago :
I have just repaired and cleaned a Grundig C8000 in best cosmetic shape.
I have left my workbench to check other things, when I heard a loud bad noise: the Grundig dropped down from my workbench onto the hard concrete floor, it was broken in many parts.

My mistake was: it was standing on a soft foam rubber mat, to near at the edge of the workbench. It became unstable and it tipped over and crashed down! Mad

redbenjoe - 2008-01-11 04:41

my worst mistake is yet to come

charlesdickens - 2008-01-11 04:53

WOW! Those are some doozies! I'm really sorry you guys had to go through such hard times. Frown

mafiagato - 2008-01-11 06:20

isolator42 - 2008-01-11 06:28

I'm very cautious on eBay & have so far avoided the worst sellers.
I bought a Hitachi 3D50 that was far from 100%, but due to inadequate packaging was further damaged in transit, turning out to be irrepairable. Oh well, only cost me around £12. Seems I'm lucky by comparison to some...

masterblaster84 - 2008-01-11 11:31

MG that sucks but it is kind of funny in a madening sort of way. Mad So did the seller make the all to common statement that he was unable to test the cassette?
Laugh Out Loud

fuzzyduck - 2008-01-11 11:31

Around this time a year ago with my GF-777 which I bought from a member on here who said it was fully working apart from the FM stereo reception. It turned out to have other major faults which took quite a while to fix due to a lack of response to emails, being fobbed off and lied to for several months. It was finally cleared up after the moderator started a private thread for those involved to sort it out.
It seems that once these scumbags have your cash they just don't give a s***. Mad Mad

mafiagato - 2008-01-11 14:56

Big Grin yeah MB64, is funny i know
The seller say me, "we test this one some weeks ago and something dont work" Nod Yes Sincerily i only see how big is, looks perfect outside:

But when im go to clear and test it in da house.... only work the leds, no radio, no tape and wait i don't open it yet, maybe is empty Smile

but well, only was 30€ and next time i have excuse to get another more cheap.

a bit of humour in this post of bad experiences is good, YO!

masterblaster84 - 2008-01-11 15:30

OK, that's funny! The thought of buying a boombox with no guts and the seller claims it's fully functional. Eek
The ultimate bad description. Nod Yes

Your right we do need some humor to deal with all of this tragedy.

charlesdickens - 2008-01-11 18:56

The reason I started this thread is because I am in the middle of one of these "bad" situations right now. Actually myself and another member here. I just don't know what to do at this point. Frown

lil.ange - 2008-01-14 12:51

i remember a friend of mine won a box on ebay , dude was real excited to get it..

well when he opened up the package it came in ,a bunch of roaches ran outta it.

so he through the package out side and left the box in side and about a hour later roaches started commin outta it.

to make a long story short he ended up leavin teh box out side.

billpc55 - 2008-01-27 16:06

i dont play in the ebay world.
my collecting just takes part out of the ebay sandbox.
i stubbed my toe once going to grab a boombox from the shelf in a thrift store.
does that count.......

arkay - 2008-01-28 00:28

I just had another one of these "awful moments" occur yesterday, which may top the Conion damage mentioned above, because I have only myself to blame for this one.

I was going through some of the boxes I have in storage. I got new shelves to put some of them on, and so I was re-arranging them, looking at them, etc... and putting them up into the shelves. At one point I was picking up a GF-9000. I was turned at an odd, awkward angle (very tight space!) to get it, wasn't paying quite enough attention because I was getting tired, and it slipped out of my grasp and fell a foot or two onto the concrete floor. Surprisingly, NO damage to the case, etc... not even a scratch(!) BUT I could hear something moving inside when I picked it up.

I now need to repair the transformer mounts and re-attach some stuff inside. ARGGGHHHHH!!!! This is NOT my best, "keeper" GF-9000, but still, I feel like an idiot for letting this happen. I had thought to swap this with someone for another box I want, but now it probably isn't good enough for that any more. I should have taken a break when I was getting tired and stayed focused on making each move carefully, deliberately... but I didn't. Live and learn.

charlesdickens - 2008-01-28 07:22

Just this past weekend I was looking through craig's list and found a mint looking GE block buster for $20! The best part was it was only 30 min away! Yippie!! I have wanted one of those since Johnny Dep used one to trick his mom over the phone! Luckily the listing was very recent, so I hastily emailed the seller. A day went by before I got an email telling me it was gone... Frown My luck has to change sooner or later right???

I'm still hoping to see that Rising everyday...
