I Agree I Agree I Agree

ford93 - 2008-02-06 08:02

Hey, Transam I'm curious as to what will be the color you'll use to match the original gray.

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-06 08:39

Picture this.
Frank walking through the local Home Depot with a gutted Conion C 100 trying to find the best matching metalic grey paint he can
get his hands on Laugh Out Loud Eek
aside from bringing it to the local body shop to
match it , that is what I'm going to have to do.
Wish me luck and keep your eyes peeled for the latest developments!

sinister - 2008-02-06 08:44

I thought the front of the Conion was silver paint with chrome accents on the tweeter ridges. Confused

Thats a great idea! Smile

Silver tends to be a little on the bright side
it will probably be closer to a light grey with very light metalic finish.

jvc.floyd - 2008-02-06 14:04

damn man thats superlative work indeed.alot of it too.

skippy1969 - 2008-02-07 04:48

Frank, shes really looking nice! Great work my friend! Big Grin

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-07 18:55

Picked out three different shades of paint today
some sand paper and filler.
I sprayed each of the cans on three seperate pieces of plastic to see
which one would match the best once dry.
I did some filling tonight so by tomorrow it can sanded and prepped for paint .

nelsongf9696 - 2008-02-08 04:05

Nice work!
Takes alot of patience and SKILLS.

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-09 08:58

Here it is with the first coat of filler primer.
I am very happy with the way the repair is going.
the crack is virtually gone.

masterblaster84 - 2008-02-09 09:42

That's hardcore transamguy, you could make a how-to video out of what your doing. I've heard of frame of restorations on cars but your the first I've heard of doing a full frame off restoration on a boombox. I can't wait to see the results! Cool

redbenjoe - 2008-02-09 13:11

TA - quit your day job --

i am sure we could all come up with enough cracked boxes for you to squeeze out a humble living !

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-09 13:25

Ira,
I was thinking that today.
Thanks for all the support everyone.
I am done for today with a completely primed box that is
drying as we speak.
Tomorrow it will be ready for wet sanding and paint.
The key to a nice paint job is spend allot of time prepping the surface and keep it clean and smooth.
Dont paint in cold or extremely humid temperatures.

ford93 - 2008-02-09 13:47

Keep it coming step by step , man I feel like it's mine. LOL

- 2008-02-09 15:50

Way to go man! This is the most interesting post i've seen yet and you are doing a super job. My hat is off to you 100% Smile

- 2008-02-09 15:52

Is that "PLASTI KOTE" paint or will is sti Confusedck well on plastic?

jimski - 2008-02-09 16:06

Use some spot puddy on that minor imperfection, mad skillz man

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-09 18:13

I am using Dupli color Acrylic Lacquer based paints
which can be used on solid or flexible surfaces.
It is a fast drying durable paint and should last a life time.
I am also letting it cure in the hot sun all day which
bakes it right on in and helps the paint level out.
I am using a filler primer which builds up nicely to hide any scratches and imperfections.
after spraying it for the second time the crack virtually disappeared. When I spray on the top coat this case is going to look mint from top to bottom.
I even took the time to sand the bottom of the box to get the feet nice and smooth.
Cant wait to lay some paint on it Im siked.
After the casing is done I am going to start on the internals.
Cleaning all the dust and grime from the inner frame. spraying all the knobs and switches ,soldering any loose wires and cleaning and routing all of the wiring.

That is painters masking tape.
It works great and it doesnt leave any sticky residue when you take it off.
it is made by 3M

transamguy1977 - 2008-02-13 15:39

A little surface rust is typical of a power supply thats twenty years old, that wont hinder the performance whatsoever.
If it bothers you I will sand it off Laugh Out Loud

- 2008-02-13 16:50

Loll..that what i was wondering but the close-up pic made it look worse than it actually is i guess. No man,you have enough work to do and it looks awesome so far!! Are you applying that top-coat tomorrow on the front? Can't wait! Smile

ned.209 - 2008-02-15 08:33

TransAm, question for you. in my experience its hard to avoid dripping, excess of spraypaint, especially on the sides of a rectangular object. how are you avoiding this?

ford93 - 2008-02-15 08:52

I Agree thats a good question, I'm curious too.
