880 decimates the m90

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-02-02 14:34

just tested both head to head, and in all seriousness

in my own humble opinion , the 880 wins hands down .

i ran a series of ten individual tests , i am not even going to show the categories . . there were 10. . .

aiwa 880 : 87 / 100

jvc rc-m90 79 / 100

masterblaster84 - 2008-02-02 14:39

What Eek.
OK the 880 is really good but wow I wouldn't have thought. I think we need some confirmation from others that own both as well. Nothing against your testing Royal but that really is a bold statement even if it's true.

What were the tests? I'm really curious to hear about the testing.

the only other u.k owner of both units is in total agreement . . .

10 tests

Royal,
You should have done that comparo a couple of weeks earlier - when Aiwa 880 was on USA ebay - there might have been quite a few more people bidding on it...
But thanks for that info - I'm going to add 880 back to the list of my desires Smile

Vladi, that's exactly what I was thinking. I would have been willing to bid higher had this information been known a few weeks ago. I still might not have won it but I would have been willing to go higher.

I'm with you though, the 880 is at or near the top of my want list.

vladi123456 - 2008-02-02 16:02

Ya, that was the first time that I saw Aiwa 880 on US ebay. I'm sure we'll see some more - with all the recession and bad economy - I think people might start selling what they have more than one

- 2008-02-02 16:56

Hmmmm i believe you but the M90 is still a heck of ALOT nicer looking. Don't like digital tuner or the big strange looking woofer in the center of the 880. Eek

billpc55 - 2008-02-02 17:00

im nor surprised. i mean that aiwa is a pretty nice looking piece of technology. also the fact there is a nice sub in the middle of it i am sure helps as well.

it's a passive radiator ... it pushes bass thru it to the front of the unit . classy piece of kit for the time . . . sealed bass chamber with a front port

billpc55 - 2008-02-02 18:28

that is super cool. i mean i think they really must have put some thought into it. very awesome.
i actualy like the way it looks very much.

skippy1969 - 2008-02-02 18:36

I don't want to talk about it. Mad Roll Eyes

- 2008-02-02 18:45

No big deal. Toshiba at least had 2 passive radiator speakers which looked much better and better sound. The problems with all of this type is that the foam rotted out. Cool and great sound.... yes, durable no. $650.00+ for this is insane! No No

ash25 - 2008-02-02 20:09

Vladi, when was there an 880 on U.S.Ebay/ I saw the one in Canada, is that it? If not do you have the EBay auction number,I would like to see it. Thanks

Yeah, it was probably the one from Canada that he was thinking about. Here's the link:

redbenjoe - 2008-02-02 21:35

royal -- was the 880 like tight and new ?
and was the m90 old and used ?

asking because i am surprised at your results -

but not arguing !

appleknocker - 2008-02-02 21:38

Fatdog, your avatar is beautiful - you sure have some skills with a camera!
Thanks for posting this comparison. I now have a new increased respect for the 880. But I sure do love the sound of an m90.

- 2008-02-03 01:09

what is your opinion based on ben

volume

bass

clarity

metad - 2008-02-03 07:02

Ha ha ha

bogdan - 2008-02-03 10:56

I've done the same tests as Royal with the rc 838 against all my other BBXes and this one won on all tests. Big Grin
Don,t take it for grant, but right now the rc 838 is my fav. Smile

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-02-03 11:01

I Agree

Panafan is right. I appreciate all the input given on this site. But if you cannot explain how you got from A to Z we have no way to know how you came up with answers or why you bothered with categories in the first place. And that in itself would probably have us thinking,"What was the point of this exercise?" By giving us your categories and their purpose we can then realize what you were trying to point out. And inform us of some things we may not have thought of. Smile

panasonic.fan - 2008-02-04 11:54

And, not to say that I don't value your opinions, I do. I just want to know what you're basing the conclusions on.

Tap Toes

Maybe Lit can help here, as he has both boxes to compare.

The other member to own both was jefferson24 and we all know what he was full of sorry to say but he was.

We all know the m90 is louder than the 880 so what is this opinion based on from what i hear the 880 isnt to bright on the highs so there is only one thing left and that is bass, it must be bloody good to beat an m90 i think were all waiting on this call Smile it would be very much apricated too.

masterblaster84 - 2008-02-04 13:09

Pretty funny, I don't think we can claim anything decimates an M90 without being called to the mat on it. True or not people will want the detail on this claim. Nod Yes

i am not expecting anyone to believe anything , just dropping my opinion . .

i was thinking people would get a bit upset by this topic.

guys , i think you will find i can claim whatever i like as my personal opinion , same as any of you.

masterblaster84 - 2008-02-04 14:46

Royal I hope that wasn't because of my posts, I absolutely wasn't challenging your opinion. If anything just making light and fun of it to a degree. I would like to see the criteria though as it would be nice to see how you compared them. Not so I can attack you rather so I can appreciate what your saying. Smile

jvc.floyd - 2008-02-04 14:56

i can see where some other boxes have subtle sound quality differences that would be considered better than the m90 ,but for the total package i think the m90 is pretty damn hard to beat, although i have heard quite a few boxes that sounded better than the m90 ,none of them were as loud .

same here floyd i have boxes that sound much better than an m90 but they just havnt got the power to match

jvc.floyd - 2008-02-04 15:53

it takes alot to keep sound quality with the volume full tilt the m90 is one of the very few iv'e seen that can really do it .

- 2008-02-04 15:59

i just tried one of the boxes a jvc it used to sound better than m90 but since the mod nochance wich actually shocked me, it just goes to show how you get used to sound when played over a long period im Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin ear to ear i diddnt realize the mod was this good

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-02-04 16:15

fellas, i gotta own up , this was a joke thread , to an extent . .

i have had the two radios in front of me all night, and basically , build quality and overall look and sound , i prefer the aiwa . .

there were no 10 tests . . .

it always makes me laugh when we (s2goers) compare the radios (although it can be interesting.

i believe it totally comes down to personal opinion . period .

i love both radios , but i think the 880 has the edge on build quality , sound quality and a few other things . . Big Grin

it would be a hard fight if i had to pick just one radio for life out of the two !

- 2008-02-04 17:13

Well weather the 880 decimates or not this thread has sure been been entertaning ben Smile i will get an 880 1 day

vladi123456 - 2008-02-04 17:23

Well then - I'm going to downgrade the 880 in my sig Big Grin

redbenjoe - 2008-02-04 19:08

hey vladi --i want a few of those boxes on your precious list also --

but you cant take royals test as defintive -

because we all know that the UK M90s are less-ferior to USA M90s !!!

vladi123456 - 2008-02-04 19:21

Ira, you can have those boxes first - you know you're gonna end up selling them to me anyway Wink

redbenjoe - 2008-02-04 19:51

and for somewhat less than your offering prices !!

nikamichi - 2008-02-04 21:54

Phew ........ Glad this is a joke

I love both these boxes, and have both these boxes. My M90 is stock in great nick, the 880 heavily modified with a new passive radiator, Kef B110 knock-off woofers.

I definitely prefer the M90, but appreciate the look of the 880. From a build quality perspective, mmmmm outward finish on the 880 is definitely better than the M90, although I prefer the finish of the M90 on the back.

Electronically, I think the M90 is superior to the 880. The 880 was slightly more expensive than the M90 new, but a lot of this cost was in the synthesizer tuner, and those finish features on the front.

Just my 2 cents worth, but forced to choose .... the M90 everytime.

jameswp67 - 2008-02-04 22:17

I also have both Nick, and I love them in similar ways, Aiwa at lower volumes, and a very pretty unit to look at; M90 when I want to crank it up to 9 and fill a gymnasium!

ash25 - 2008-02-05 15:35

I also have both and where as I used to think that the cs880 was louder,I dont believe so. And I agree with James, better at lower volumes on the Aiwa but when you really wanna crank, the m90. I couldnt have been told otherwise before I got the m90 as I didnt think ANYTHING could touch MY Aiwa.
