- Wega: privat modul 33
- Fisher: PH-490

So help me please to complete this!

TOM
I have the Marantz PMS-7000 from your list, and the Helix HX-815 I posted about yesterday is a bit BIGGER, I think (didn't actually measure), because of the extra "surround" speakers attached to it, and because it is thicker front-to-back.
Hope that helps. Don't know much about 3-pieces, since I usually only collect one-pieces.
Party Center 2000 hifi - what does this look like?
Hello NED 209
The Grundig Party Center 2000 looks almost like the Party Center 1000, but the 2000 came one year later on the market.
1983 the 1000 was the biggest Grundig Box, 1984 followed the Grundig 2000. The different between is, that the 2000 got a great synthesizer tuner, 3-motor tape, got a bigger amp (2 x 25 Watt's of music-power, real 2 x 25!) and a other speaker system.
The 1000 is a great sounding Stereo-Box, the 2000 is next to the Telefunken M1 probably the best sounding box on the B-Box market. Like the M1 the 2000 is a Hifi DIN 45500-Box, and you can hear that. It's got a sound like a good home-stereo system with big speakers. The wall of sound is unbelivable. Hifi DIN got a kind of 3-D sound. If you have a M1 for shure you know what I'm talking about ...
This is a 1000:

IMHO:
1)TELEFUNKEN M1
best three piece unit for me
2) Grundig Partycenter 1000 & Grundig Partycenter 2000 (digital tuner)
great sound but not as loud and powerfull and clear like the M1
3) Fisher PH 490
heavy unit with very good sound - but not so clear and crispy like M1
4) Philips D8734
sound is not as good as M1 & Partycenter or Fisher
about all other units i can not help you out because never heard them.
cheers
ghetto68
Philips-d8644
JVC-pc5
rotel rpm 10 is the best
I got the Rotel RMP-10
and it's not the best - the best box is the Telefunken M1 (as good as my Bose Accusticmas 5 - no joke).
I just bring my Kenwood DC-20 (El Poco) to the service (tuner didn't get any FM-stations, Tape and amp got problems). At saturday I'll get it back (and I can't wait). I will let you know how the first soundcheck was! Mybe better than the M1 ... we'll see ...
Best wishes
TOM
To Philips:
I had all the big Philips-Boxes, but the sound didn't make me happy. High's and deap bass are missing at all those Ghettoblasters, but they look great and had a lot of goodies (D 8734, the DJ-Ghettoblaster, a great box to play with), but it look's better than it sounds ...
Fisher 480 also can be put in there.
hey Tom, the kenwood, I have one but, it only has the internal speakers. Does yours have the optional side speakers?
they arent very pretty, are they? i like the party centre... does their sound make up for their looks, especially the M-1?

Don't forget the other one Tom...(though you haven't had a chance to hear it yet...
)
To erniejada
I'm looking for a Fisher PH 490 (don't know how the 480 look like) for my collection ... and yes, my El Poco got the external speakers and the flight-case (incl. all papers and the original broshure) ...
To NED 209
The M1 is the best sounding Boombox ever. It kicks even big home-stereo-systems a$$. Ok, it don't look like a 777, but this one is built 1978, at this time this box was high-tec ...
To oldskool69
I got a JVC PC-55, which powers up (lights, tuner and tape working) but no sound is coming out of the speakers. You are right, I didn't have the time till yet to see what's wrong ... but you're right, I forgot to list it (sorry!) ...
To all:
How does the Hitachi 9900 sound? This is also a box of my taste, but I didn't have one ... but I get one ... someday!
Best wishes
TOM

I have never seen one of theese boxes before tom. WoW that is just amazing
kid.sensation - 2008-02-05 12:47
even if they are not really accepted as boomboxes/ghettoblasters by lot of people i would like to add the Panasonic RX-A2/RX-6400.
This thing pumps and beats the M1 with sheer power.
You need to get and hear one of these things tom!
It can blew away the M1 easily due to its power.
But the M1 has the better sound on low to mid-volume inside a room.( but they are still very close )
If you raise the volume the A2 will kick every vintage boomboxes a$$
but it's definately a 3-piece and a damn big and bad monster!
there is nothing special about the m1 in my book apart from it has quite good sound out of 5 inch speakers, its certainly not the box people make it out to be if it wasnt for the great highs the kaboom would win hands down
ill add the telefunken does have a great sound but it destorts verry easy at say number 3 i dont know if anybody else finds this, maybe i have a faulty unit

OMG!!!
That el-Poco is LOCO!!! IF I ever get the chance to get one of these without having to put up my house as collateral I will.
Really!
By the way, anyone got an Aiwa Carryin Compo they'd like to brag about?
Hey oldskool69
You told me that once you wanne come back to germany to show your children where you've been, in your "younger" days.
Frankfurt-airport is 20 km (about 14 miles) away from us. I already invite you to make a soundcheck at my house. Do that! Come on over and see what's going on! Please ....!
I gonne tell you exactly about the DC-20 how it sounds, when it comes back on saturday ...ohhhh, and I realy can't wait, believe me ...
To rimmer36
I've got a Panasonic RX-A2S - it's not a bad unit, and yes, it's loud. The sound is good, but nothing against the M1. Sorry, my english isn't very good, so I didn't understand what you mean with "its certainly not the box people make it out to be if it wasnt for the great highs the kaboom would win hands down". Can you explain that to me with other (easyier) words? Thanks ... The Rotel-box (no.3) sounds real good, but still far away from the M1.
Best wishes
TOM
Tom would you be intrested in selling me a rotel rpm10?
Forget about my remarks on the studio1 tom i think i have a faulty one
Have you got a picture of the m1 tom thanks
Hello rimmer36
Sorry, but I wanne keep my Rotel-box. It was a hard job for me to get one ... and it realy sound's nice - it's in my personaly top 10!
But I don't understand why you ask me about a picture of the M1? I just got a old photo of it (a few months old - now there is a Sharp GF-777 and not a Marantz PMS 7004 under the M1 any more ...). And there are a few different typs of the M1, but they all sound the same ...
Best wishes
TOM
that kenwood box with the flight case is about the coolest looking portable audio device i have seen. its awesome.
I agree Bill!
This is a great thread...
Im new to the idea of collecting this style of box. Thanks to Sinister and his Fisher PH-492 I now own. I love it.
Its become my daily use box! Except for the past week... its gone under the knife for a full overhaul and restoration!
Cant wait to get it back!
tom it looks like the bottom part is a amp?
the one i have just has the portable part. when it is in the case and the bottom part added, is it fully portable and run off batteries?
this is what I have
link to my old thread
if anyone sees the rest of the unit, let me know!!!
now the part i have does have built in speakers on the side
panasonic.fan - 2008-02-05 21:09
I think that the Panasonic RX-C100 and C300 should be in the conversation.
If anyone has heard a properly functioning Aiwa CA-70, it has some pretty amazing sound.
To JLF
Do you have a picture of the Fisher PH-492?
To erniejade
Yes, under the mobile part is the amp. The build in speakers are not realy good and it just have 2 x 10 Watts if I remember right (I give all the paperwork to the engineer for the overhole). There is an extra battery box in the back of the flightcase. The speakers a 2-way with a passiv bass radiator, very massiv build. There was also a optional car adapter for 12 V to 220 Volt, but this cost 849,- DM!
To Panasonic Fan:
Do you have a picture of the RX-100 or/and C300 and the Aiwa CA-70? I had a CA-30 (with the passiv bass radiator sitting under the box) but that one wasn't that nice.
To all:
- Akai PJ 35 (even when it not realy sounds good)
- ...
Best wishes and thanks for your help

These boxes represent the exact period when the portable audio market realised they weren't that bothered about carrying this crap around any more.

Sorry, the 480 model isn't HiFi. It hasn't enclosed speakers, the boxes are made of thin plastic.

yup.
Philips/Magnavox's b-box of this type, the D8644, was billed as a "transportable", with it's wooden speakers (
catalogue scans here).
Funny thing though - as these (no so) portables got more & more "proper" audio features; cheap versions of home systems first arrived, with many of those features removed, such as this choice item from that top brand, Amstrad:
Never mind the quality, feel the width.
My girlfriend had one of these & I can honestly say it sounded truly awful. She was hot though...

I have both of these units and agree with Panafan!

i have a stunning ca-70 , re foamed original speakers . . its sounds lovely ! ! !
I would also like to submit the lovely Sansui CP-99/77/55's. These also have wooden cabinets for the speakers. Another of this type is the JVC PC-350W (logic controlled). These are also wonderful sounding units!
Oh yeah, and the mighty RX-DT680 from Panasonic!
To be honest, if you're including the Sony FH series then you have to include the Aiwa Carryin' Compo.
For hifitom:
It a little(!)large but I thought it would give you a better view.
From the top left below the PC-55 you have from me is the Panasonic RX-DT680, and below it the National/Panasonic RX-C100. To the right of the RX-C100 is the Sansui CP-99W. To the right of it and below the JVC-PC3 is the National/Panasonic RX-C300. Above it and the JVC-PC3 is the Pioneer CK-5F I should have added to the list of Hi-Fi quality units. All the units sound fantastic and I think would impress you.
The Sanyo C9 isn't bad but doesn't come close to these I think.
one has to include the gf 1000 and m90.
Great pick os lovin it.
Thanks Rim, I have some new family members that I haven't got around to posting that aren't in the photo. And as noted, the JVC PC-55 went to hifitom. I'll let you all guess what it was traded for.
nice group pic thanks for sharing, OLDSKOOL69
never saw your collection before this , oldskool,
so thanks -- they all look good -- but i bet the pioneer is one of the best

im working on my 909 as i type ira i have 3 probs though the back plate on the cassette is screwed on too tight and the screws that hold it there the heads have worn away, so i cant get it off.
Prob 2 the belts i have been sent are the rong ones grrr plus it takes 3 belts and not 2 as i thought, plus the tape counter.
I had the Kenwood compo, it had very enjoyable sound. Also Technics SA-CO7, a great sounding unit...RX-C100 also a great unit, but I agree with Rimmer at full volume and M90 can stay with anything IMHO...

It is incredible sounding. I've always thought it's only weakness (I've posted this before) was that it really needed a dedicated tweeter like it's little brother CK-3 or big brother CK-11. The 22cm flat surface area is equivalent to an 8" woofer so highs aren't as crisp as they could be with an integrated midrange-tweeter combo.
