Help needed for tracking down TRK-3D

kim.petersen - 2011-05-25 15:11

isolator43, am told you da man to track ol' vintage Hitachi's, lets try this on for size:

In 1991 I bought a Hitachi (almost 100% sure it was a Hitachi because of the 3D and Surround buttons), which sported a tapedeck (lefthand side), 3 woofers (1 large center, 2 smaller sidewoofers) and a CD deck (centered).

Tape and CD both were top-placed.

Now, been searching the net night and day without finding ANYTHING that remotely resembles the description (hence I start to wonder if it REALLY was a Hitachi) - perhaps you could be of assistance?

It looks like a cross between a TRK-3D7 and a TRK-3D80 (my current ghettoblaster).Wooferconfiguration and tapedeck like the 3D7, rounded like the 3D80. (GAWD, is this blaster a figment of my imagination or...?!)

Right.

CD, single woofer, single tape, rounded appearance, surround button.
Hmm, tricky.

I don't know of a Hiachi 3D that matches all of that.

Some questions to help me out here:

- Was the centre woofer hidden away at all?

- If not, was the centre woofer quite alot bigger than the left & right speakers (as in the 3D7 & 3D80), or was it a similar size (as in the 3D30 & 3D2)?

- Did the speakers have chrome dustcaps, or were they all black?

- Did it definitey have a CD player?

- Did it definitely have only one tape deck?

- Any other info you can think of might be a help.

Finally, there is one 3D with a CD even I have yet to see - the CX300, which could be it. Otherwise, it's quite possible that itr was a copycat 3D - there were plenty around, & they weren't all rubbish either

Did it look something like this?

I know it-s a double decker but it-s maybe on the same series.

If you can access boomboxery, have a browse here & see if you see it:

We have one of these in the shop if anyone is interested. Fully working, restored, etc.....

Kim are you Danish, or is that just a Danish name?

kim.petersen - 2011-05-26 08:46

Isolator:

No, the centerplaced woofer was not hidden, but it is a lot bigger than the side woofers.

I can't remember the color of the dustcaps, but believe they must have been chrome.

Yes, definitely had a CD-player.

Almost 100% it only had 1 tape deck.

It had a handle like the TRK-3D80 and same "round" design.

Couldn't have been a Panasonic......right? Couldn't have been....

Nev:

No, the center woofer is not hidden and the CD should be centered aswell, but the rounded design "fits the bill".

Yes, I'm from Denmark. Here it's a guys name, contrary to the US where its mostly considered a gals name!

I'll post more if I remember any details of importance.

Thanks for your swift reply, both of you.

It also had kinda a handle on both sides, not a real handle, rather a "cave" on both ends...

kim.petersen - 2011-05-26 14:12

And I also believe it had kind of a hint of "integrated feet", like the TRK3D30E.

kim.petersen - 2011-05-26 14:21

Used to own the TRK-3D70E....sigh.....way back...those were the days...

kim.petersen - 2011-05-26 14:23

I mixing the good ol' TRK-3D70E with a later blaster I owned......(?)

kim.petersen - 2011-05-26 14:30

The TRK-3D70E fits the bill 'cept for the CD part - twisting me brain to figure out WHICH blaster I bought with a CD-player...

retro - 2011-05-26 20:31

Was it similar to this TRK-CD3?

isolator42 - 2011-05-27 00:40

I considered the CD3/CX-W800, but it's lack of "roundedness", twin-decks, & left-mounted CD put me off.

If it isn't the mysterious CX300 (which could possibly be a CD equipped version of the 3D30/35), then I'm stumped. Possibly time to consider that it wasn't a Hitachi.

Kim, more questions

Can you remember exactly what text any graphics on the speaker grilles said? Also what country did you own this mystery boomer in?

I think you may be right here: you might be mixing up features of the 3D70 (a top choice 3D for sure) & the CD boomer you owned. Have another think & let us know. Old photos can be a real help here - the boomer you seek may be in the background of one...

isolator42 - 2011-06-01 05:31

Reckon we've solved this.

Rounded look, "cave" handles & all the above means it's a 3D70 (or 3D75 if it has 'surround'). The CD player is from a different, later boomer.

Call it if I'm wrong Kim...

kim.petersen - 2011-06-02 00:15

I think you're right, must be a "memory mixup" on my hand.

Thanks for all your help.

Guess all that's left now, is to sift through EACH AND EVERYONE of the stereos on http://www.stereo80s.com/ ...

retro.addict - 2011-06-03 16:06

Was it like this, but with a CD player?

isolator42 - 2011-06-05 02:39

A 3D50 with a CD? ooh, let me at it
