Small Speakers - Big Bass Sound ?

ghettoman - 2011-06-20 14:02

Have you got any boxes with small speakers with awsome sound and bass ?

i have my Jvc Pc5,it has 4" bass but sounds better than most of my boxes with 8" ..you just would never think they were just 4 inch !

redbenjoe - 2011-06-20 14:49

the speakers from the rotel 10 -- are about the same size as the pc5s- and with a MUCH deeper // cleaner // louder bass... more than an M90 and even a tele studio... really

retro - 2011-06-20 15:26

The PC-55 has pretty good bass also considering the size of the woofers.

brutus442 - 2011-06-20 15:39

I have to agree with Retro, the 55/ 550's speaker do deliver a considerable bass punch given their size. Thanks should go to the wood cabinet that seems to resonate and "carry" the bass better than plastic IMHO

retro - 2011-06-20 15:49

How about the Bose AW-1? Very deep bass for a 4" woofer, thanks to it's acoustic wave cabinet design.

redbenjoe - 2011-06-20 15:54

agree with you retro -

thaw AW-1 is so SOLID sounding

radio.raheem - 2011-06-20 16:49

Apologies for disagreing with anybody...i have removed my posts....just im so exited about having 24gig ram

ghettoman - 2011-06-20 16:53

Errrm...hmmm..its hard to call with the Pc5 ans Pc55,because i like them both alot,if i had to choose though,i would have to choose the pc5,but thats just a personal choice, the reason for that is the pc5 has smaller bass and for the tiny speaker size they really kick,if you turn your back on one while playing, you would'nt know the difference between that and a large set of hifi speakers,it still puzzles me how jvc did it..

The rotel box Ira,i have hurd alot of impressive things about them, just for curious sake,i would love to get my grubby mits (hands) on one,i am also impressed with my Amstrad 8090 with pop out walkman, that has (i think) 5" bass, but its loud as hell with plenty of good bass..i think in the u.s they were badged Candle.. if i find a pic of one i will upload it..but if you google amstrad 8090 that should show one..

toocool4 - 2011-06-21 02:39

I use to have the Totem Acoustic Model 1 in my system, they use a 5.5 inch Dynaudio bass / midrange drive unit. This speaker can go low for it’s size. They are under a foot tall.

The only thing was they were terribly inefficient at about 83db and a difficult 4 ohm load, but if you have an amp with plenty on current delivery you are fine and they sounded fantastic.

Totem Model 1

ghettoman - 2011-06-21 03:35

The nicest little hifi speakers i had was a pair of mission 700,they have been re-issued with the white bass speakers but i had the first version,i had my prologic 6-piece kenwood going through them,i could turn the volume up loud and they would just sit there dancing around staying crisp and clear,i could'nt beleve the power they could take..the bass were "4 or poss 5" max..

As for boombox's,the Aiwa Tpr950 has monster sound for the size of the box,the sound is amaizing,i have one and the bass is brilliant for what it is,and i love the needle vu's

toocool4 - 2011-06-21 04:15

The Mission 700 I think I remember them, are they the ones with the upside tweeters? as in the tweeter was under the bass / midrange drive unit.

My first ever amp was a Mission Cyrus 2, which I later upgraded with PSX power supply great little amp.

It’s funny Mission and Cyrus appears to be a separate divisions now.

I remember listening to a pair of Totem Acoustic Model 1's at Stereophile's Home Theater & Specialty Audio Show at the Waldorf Astoria years ago, and was amazed by the low frequencies this little loudspeaker produced.

isolator42 - 2011-06-21 05:16

The drivers in my Panasonic RX-DT610 aren't much bigger than 4" & that boomer dishes out plenty of bass. Front & rear reflex ports help alot, as the drivers don't seem to move a huge amount (like they do in a Hitachi 3D).

toocool4 - 2011-06-21 05:38

Yes retro it always amazes me how Vince Bruzzese manages to get the bass out of his boxes.

I remember listening to the Arro at the Hi-Fi Show and thinking all that bass cannot be coming from that tiny columns with 4.5 inch drive units, if you have seen the Arro you will know what I mean.

I spoke to Vince about the Arro as he has helped me out in the past when I damaged the tweeters on my Model 1’s.

I had the Model 1’s for years loved the sound but I have now moved on to better non Totem speakers.

Thanks Retro I hear you but i just had memories of the way I used to be under rimmer...and the last thing i wanted to do was offend anybody like i used to....but yes i have heard the rotel and I agree with redbenjoe but the m90 is still better and it should be....You just cant get that same depth of sound out of 4"" drivers that you can get on my m90 and im not just talking about bass....there is just something lacking in a 4 inch bass reproduction of sound...but I cant explaine it....altho the rotel is a nice unit indeed...

ghettoman - 2011-06-21 16:51

Rimster, you forgot to mention another box with tiny speakers but good bass, the sony Sony CFD-K10 ,you still have one ? i had one and it only had tiny 3" speakers but the bass was amaizing !! they are a top quality box and they weigh a ton !

radio.raheem - 2011-06-21 17:13

Ey up beanie lad....yup the kf10 is outstanding lad....and yes i still have one with the credit card remote...all reafoamed man.....Do you remember that big sony you sold us paul...what was it...770 or summit...the kf10 kills it....i now know why the k10 was more expensive than the 770 lad....worth every penny for the size of it man...

Dt680 are 5""  and LG cummon lav that's worse than alba...so id pass on that...

hardmen - 2011-06-21 20:06

My RX-DT909 with 3,5" speakers produces lots of deeper and louder bass!!!

isolator42 - 2011-06-22 00:21

@Beanie Man: that Sony looks top-quality, & square-edged too. Very nice. Here's another link:

btw, what's that hole on the right hand side - a bass port?

first off, RETRO and BM, i,m really sorry guys but i can,t get pics up at the mo as i have no camera, do i sound like ANDY V now lol

and secondly this is to you R RAHEEM, LG sell the most expensive tv and surrond systems on the market so they can,t be that shite can they? and i can add that it sounds as good as most 80,s boxes for size, and it puts out more power than the m70, i think it could be a future collectable

Iso I have stripped a few of these sonys down...as far as i can tell the hole on the side serves no perpouse....but it was a feature acording to the sony info on this model yrs ago...but think of this sony as a big upgrade from your z7 it is of the same quality and construction...the only thing that let's it down is having a cd player....the lenzes are always failing and i don't like jumping cd's anyway.....

superfly guy can we have a discription of this lg lad...i mean how big are the speakers etc???thanks mate....if it beats the m70 it must be a formidable peice of work....

Funny, as I looked at the pics, I had the same thought. It was the twist-lock battery cover that did it for me. On the zx7, that feature seals the cabinet & tightens up the bass response, even from those little APM speakers.

If that hole on the right is a bass port, it looks like Sony designed the whole case as a single ported enclosure, allowing for the internals, etc. If done properly this would improve the bass plenty. Best example of this is the Kaboom.

lav.loo - 2011-06-22 05:22

METAD, yes that is the box, thanks for posting, and sorry for sounding like ANDY V

R RAHEEM, if you look at my topic called blown away by an LG which i posted a while back in this section, you will see that RETRO has uploaded a schematic/manual with all the details you need, it really is a cracking box im not shi**in ya, the only thing missing from mine is the remote so i can,t change the eq presets, but it sounds great anyway, loads of bass and it goes really loud very nice clear sound too

ghettoman - 2011-06-22 06:41

Iso yes the hole in the side of the sony is a bass port, and i think the battery compartment acts like a bass chamber, because the battery door is made of metal on plastic e.g outa plate of the door is plasic and the inner skin is metal, the battery door weighes a ton and it does'nt have cheapo clips on the battery door,it has turn wist locks, these little sony's are top quality mate, when new they were around £220..if you have'nt got one in your collection you need one,you wont be dissapointed..they sound awsom, and dont let the little 3" speakers fool you,the bass out of that thing is crazy for there size..

nevone - 2011-07-01 12:09

for me, the small boombox speaker with good bass would be the sanyo c5. Wooden speakers with bass reflex holes.

retro - 2011-07-01 21:02

After reading so many positive reviews online, I recently purchases a pair of Audioengine A2 powered speakers for my PC, and I can't believe the low end that comes from these tiny cabinets. The woofers are woven carbon fibre and measure slightly less than 4" in diameter. For moderate level listening, a subwoofer is not needed although you  can purchase an optional sub if you need more kick.

claret.badger - 2011-07-02 11:16

Just bought a JVC PC5

I'm quite excited after reading this thread

- I should be picking it up next week!

Small Old Woofer's Sound great with lots of power behind them till you turn up the volume - then you learn just how hard it is to; Find parts and or somebody willing to rebuild the Exact speaker that came with the Original unit for the Original sound.

Yes it is somewhat easy to replace with aftermarket or an upgraded speaker but that takes away from the Originality of the Original unit & that is the Sound that we are all listening for.
