Has anyone got any pictures that show the difference between the 8989s that were made or can anyone just tell me the differences in the specs.Many thanks.

Hey there...I can't tell you officially the main differences between 8989 varients but there are 2 models with slightly different colour schemes....the main thing you need to know as with like say the jvc m90 is that there all the same power output as basically they all share the same amps etc.....maybe sombody else can chime in here badboy and im sure they will....

Besides different color of the tuner panel they have different power consumption

8989H, HB, E, Z - 28watts

8989, 8989 II    - 15watts

And 8989 II has white speakers unlike others.

Didn't one version have a true line-in also?

Those 2 examples shown by metad use or run on a different voltage....this acounts for the different power ratings...but rest assured they will be the same overall power output with them...

I Just recently got an offer to buy a Sharp GF 8989 HB for about 115$. Due to the fact that this is the first boombox I consider buying, I am asking if this is a good prize, or if I should bargain a little with him.

To many veriants £does the box fully work? is it complete? is it mint? only you can decide if you want the box....im not going to perswade you eather way maybe somody else will

Germany is boombox goldmine, still plenty of nice Sharps there.

It does work and it is complete. Though the fast rewind is a little slower than the fast forward and the glass in front of the tuner scale (don't know if it's the right expression for this in english) is a little blurred.

I want the box, but I have no idea if the price is fair, as I have basically no experience with boomboxes and did'nt find prices for this model on the internet.

Thanks for the link, metad. But I think I want to start a little slower and get to know how everything works in these old machines, before I buy a really expensive and rare one, ending up in destroying it for some reason.

well, if you live in Germany, and tuner glass with a problem - $115  a bit too high for a GF-8989.

If it has ff rew probs leave it for sure...it;s a pain to fix if you have no experience at boombox repair and I wouldn't buy the other eather shown by metad unles it has had a ful repair....as these have a deck problem associated with age...that even i wont attempt... repairing.....im sure you know what i mean metad.....I would leave both unless your good at repairing boxes....apologies for stepping on your toes metad i diddn't mean to my friend...

GF-9*9*_series tape mechanism is easiest to repair.

it's not TPR-950, 990, or TRK-8190...or M-90,

so, Radio Raheem, stop telling that ... 

LOL as far as i know it's like most of that series metad....that rubber sleeve breaks around the capstan bar....a nightmare to fix....but you can correct me if im wrong metat by all means...

Yes, on the most boxes of that series, rubber pulley turns into sticky "goo", after 30+years - that's a weak point of that type of mechanism,

but it's not a nightmare to fix, at all.

Very easy to work on it (along with GF-555, 525, 515 series),

but Aiwa's and Hitachi's are real nightmare.

I ended up with a Philips D8614, as I saw quite a few people on here saying it has a good sound.

Well, to tell the truth most of them sound crappy but SHARP' got the LOOK! (at least).

I agree metad...the 8989 does make some noise though

GF-555 is a noise winner  Squealing midrange is horrible.

But I love this box for the looks and build quality.

If you were over here lad you could have another 555 for free...they are loud and the build quality is pretty good...just the sound lol
