a bit more info about this Sanyo C9 found on the old server from a better ebay description from long ago...
This auction is for a Sanyo vintage early 80’s boombox. Has a date code of 5/7/82. It states it’s a: Portable Mini Component System on front, I would say that’s pretty accurate, it has 80 watts stated on back which is a lot of power for a boombox, especially for one this size, definitely a higher than typical quality unit, I’ve looked at some other C series Sanyo’s and this one is much better quality than any others I’ve seen. Solid, not flimsy like many others.
This unit has great sound and reception, though the cassette is not working properly, not unusual for one of these, but the problem appears to be the function buttons, when you press them it will sometimes work, the motor looks good but the buttons need repair. It’s a nice cassette player so if you are handy and work on them it could be worth the effort. Unless you are planning on fixing the tape player I wouldn’t advise punching any of the tape buttons when it arrives, they get stuck when you do and you have to repeatedly punch the buttons before it will stop. Otherwise it works great, has AM/FM and a Short wave 1 and Short wave 2 band. On back there are AM/FM/SW connections (in addition to the standard antenna) so you can hook external antenna’s for better reception.
Also has an RCA In set of plugs so you can hook up your Ipod, MP3, Record player or some other component unit. Also has RCA Out to output to another unit. The speakers are detachable so you can separate them out and arrange them how you like. Each speaker has a 6” woofer, right above each woofer there are 2 smaller tweeters.
There is a standard radio tuner dial plus a fine tuning dial. There is an antenna in back in good shape. Has Bass and volume with treble and balance inset, loudness; headphone output; Mic input; Beat cancel. The tape player has music search; dolby; metal tape counter and input control, some nice functions if you can get it working.
In the back it has a DC power supply unit that juts out a couple of inches on bottom and accepts a standard 120V power cord or a 12V power supply. I am supplying a 12V power supply that runs it just fine.
I would rate physical condition as good for something this old. Some scratches here and there, some dings around the edge and top but it’s typical for something this old and nothing terrible, no missing knobs or buttons and all are in good shape. There is a compartment in front for batteries that flips open, it sometimes doesn’t stay closed when moving around but it’s fine when still, the plastic bit that holds the antenna in place when not extended is broken but it still stays in place OK, there is one small strip of plastic that is broken off on back side but like the antenna bit it’s minor and can’t be seen. Speakers grills have a couple of spots but are not dented or broken, they look great. Be careful with the handles, I think over time they have gotten a little worn where they lock into place, just be sure they are securely seated and don’t swing around when moving and it’s OK.
This unit measures 23” X 7 ½” X 9” (with speakers) but weighs a solid 25 lbs. It’s small but heavy so you know there is a lot packed in it, the receiver power/cassette box is 7” X 9” X 9”, small but puts out terrific sound. It’s a true 80’s product with more quality and power than is typical for these boomboxes.
... like this?

Wow thanks for the READ james.....batts go in the front ehh that is unusual...only my akai pj33 i have seen like this...and now we know she has 6 inch speakers...I have heard a couple of boxes as loud as the m90...sharp gx 300 and a sharp 939...also an akai....actually the akai is in my shed...but actual sound quality the m90 munches the lot...at least mine does...im looking forward to this mod...and i think i have already found the perfect replacment speakers for it...
radio.raheem - 2011-07-29 07:50
Well this thing is very LOUD, i would guess on par with the m90.....but as it stands it is going to need...bass tubing new drivers, tweeters....to even think of compairing it to the m90, sound wize...not much bass but again thats down to very poor drivers.....should make an interesting mod in the future..
Well here below is some competition for your Sanyo C9 the Yamahaha is a very heavy compared to the Pioneer the PC-9 is also very Loud even on these old batteries I guess that is because I just discovered that the PC-9 has batteries in it I dont remember when they were put in there & and they work or are still good! but the CT-3 needs new woofer surround's .. so untill it gets new surround's we're - not gonna play with that one...

I think the yamaha and sanyo are both made by sanyo...im not sure tho...there both very similar in quite a few ways....I have tried the sanyo on cans and it is still loud...but it lacks the punch the m90 has....that's a good shot james i can even see the shine on your laptop screen..
radio.raheem - 2011-07-29 13:46
Ok this is interesting...i took the back of the cabs...the sound has become rich and warm...just like it did on my fisher 480.....another box made by sanyo....did this because the cabs are roughly the same as the 480 but smaller....so the mod has begun
Retro take the back of your 480 there is one heck of a difference....i just drilled holes in my 480 cabs and put some m90 tweeters in....and changed the bass cones....so my 480 sounds virtually the same as my m90 just not as loud
radio.raheem - 2011-07-29 15:00
ok now we have some m90 tweeters crossovers installed....i can't wait untill tomorrow
erniejade - 2011-07-29 19:37
Put some Focal drivers in it and call it a day LOl. the c9 is a good unit.
radio.raheem - 2011-07-29 20:39
