Holy Grail Of Booombox/Ghettoblasters
mrupscale1 - 2011-08-16 17:49
I really would like to know what the buyers think is the greatest of all boomboxes!! You have collections so you be the judges. I think its the RCM70 series. For power, size and price!!
ghettoman - 2011-08-16 17:59
i'de say the M90 would thrash the M70,plus the M90 is nicer looking, more power, bigger speakers ect..the Sharp GF777 is nice too,all to their own opinion though mate, some people will prefure the 777,some love the M90,others May like the M70..you even get people liking the Discolite, and they sound Cr@p !
mrupscale1 - 2011-08-16 18:18
I like the m90 but the price is crazy for a nice one. Almost got one for $450 but they changed their mind. I ended up getting a mint panasonic rx 5350 for $675 from canada and i think it was even better than the M90.
ghettoman - 2011-08-16 18:31
the 5350 is a stunning box, even better than the 7000,but both of those boxes are rare as hens teeth over here in uk..infact i dont think any exist over here..
radio.raheem - 2011-08-16 18:50
All people say the m90 is better than the panna...but i would like one...bredgeo has both...the m90 will kill an m70 no question...beenie an m70 only sounds slightly better than a 9696 and you had one of those lad...
ghettoman - 2011-08-16 18:54
still got the 9696 man,it sounds ace, better the the 9090,91,92,94,95..the 9696 kicks butt..and i'm not normally a fan of these types..
radio.raheem - 2011-08-16 18:58
still got the 9696 man,it sounds ace, better the the 9090,91,92,94,95..the 9696 kicks butt..and i'm not normally a fan of these types..
But an m90 kicks minge..lol jk...mmmm an m70 could be on the cards then....most people recon m70's aint got lots of bass...lav recons that phillips of his kills an m70..he had both
M90 versus the m70 well the 90 has more amplifier power $ Finesse, But the M70 is Better as You Would actually Carry the M70 outside and play it outside because of it's construction and placement of control's versus the m90.
Imagaine either being placed on the ground somewhere; something could be kicked into the face of it and mess up the controls cassette deck n such versus the m70 which only has speaker's in front and is built more durable than the m90.
When either one breaks heaven forbid ... which One is less expensive to fix and has more part's and or parts box's online for sale on a regualar basis - the JVC RC-M70 of course!
Therefore the M70 is All around the better choice for actually using versus those that have a m90 but dont ever take it outside and or carry it around playing it on batteries...
Sorry Beanie Man but the M70 or the M50 is a better All around OUTSIDE box as these are intended to be played OUTSIDE Yes?
versus the very delicate M90 which is a bit louder than the m70 - but when you are ouside who is really measuring those watts?

well for the correct amount of change $$$ that could be arranged

I have fixed about 10 m90's at a cost of no more than £100 for all...the m70 has those controls that break all the time...this is just my opinion though
bendycat - 2011-08-17 13:40
some of the boxes that are most talked about or shown
conion c100f
M90
M70
disco lite
lasonic 975
sharp 777
but it all depends on what you feel you want the most - what you can get yer hands on - what you can afford - or what you can't get that makes it a "want it so much it hurts box"
cheers B
ghettoman - 2011-08-17 14:00
i've had a GF777,only sold it to get my GF999,i Had a C100F,only sold that because it had issues and i found it a pain in the anus to work on,I had a Discolite,i sold that because it sounded truely awfull,so after the fun of the light show wore off,it just had to go ! i have seen and hurd an M90,but never owned one,it sounded awsom ! never seen a M70,i do have a Lasonic 975,they are lovely to look at but very awkward to get it sounding right, sounds too bassy,in a horrible way..speakers are too easily driven..
bendycat - 2011-08-17 14:20
I think that is the thing - each one has some thing that we don't like about them
for me the only one that i love the most is my 9494
i think there are about 20 or so boxes that we would all love to have in the collection - finding the top most box ? well that a hard one
mellymelsr - 2011-08-17 17:01
I have been lucky enough to listen to all the big boys...M90, C100F, 5350, Big Ben, M70, RX7700 and make sound comparisons with each of them. For outside use and carrying in the streets the M70 has the best overall package and design. It is relatively light, has a carrying strap, powerful, cassette controls on top, bullet-proof deck, good battey life, great sound, and the sound carries very well outdoors. Without question the M90 is louder, has deeper bass, and better sound but if I had to pick one to carry for several hours I choose the M70, that's why I own 5 of them. The 5350 is a fabulous sounding box, but the M90 sounds better. The solid bass and beautiful high from those amazing tweeters on the M90 can't be matched by any other 1 piece boombox. So in summation my favorite carry around box is the M70, if someone else is carrying it, the M90.
ghettoman - 2011-08-17 17:45

Ha ha ha thats a kool one,i like that

I dont want or EVER desire the Disco-Light cause i dont want to look at it ...
Like Really Now ,, do you sit and STARE at your box whilst it is playing?
We Simply wish to HEAR our choice in music from the box
Lasonic TRC-975 / lasonic trc-951 are simply too Big or Huge to lug around and has less power and a flimsy cabinet to be able to withstand the bass note's resonateing from the cheap box that they have even cheaper woofer's inside...
M70 is the Perfect sized box
M90 is ok if you never take it outside but then who does?
Conion C-100F is Efficent with sound at low volume but runs out of power and sound output at higher volume's and once again is simply too big or Huge to lug around...
Sharp GF-777 or LOL Sharp GF-777Z - same thing... Four (4) woofer's sharing the same baffle'd air space or cabinet - really now ... Two (2) sub's fighting the same air space utlized by the full-range woofer's? this is just a large box with Four 6.5 inch woofers accross the face of it and the only seperation you get is from the tweeter's ... Looks impressive... and is loud ... & - so what...
We afforded to get all but the lasonic 975/951 and or the discolyte and or most all of the rest of the huge box's out there ...
Only truely LARGE or HUGE box we have is the Conion C-100F and it's cousin the Technisonic Conion TC-999
oh and if you were to count the Panasonic RX-A2 as a boombox then that would be the ABSOLUTE Largest box? box's? that we like...
Think I added one ,, the Panasonic RX-A2 ...

I loved the power of my M70 and IMO, my PC-5 was pretty loud. A con of the JVC PC-5 was its weight, though. For how heavy it was it should have been at least 100 watts. I suppose that's a lot to ask of 4 inch drivers. I have never heard the M90, but everyone swears by that box.
radio.raheem - 2011-08-18 21:08
The pc5 is a GREAT example but I agree it's to heavy

Hi dragonhead00,,, it is REALLY simple... take your JVC PC-5 and toss the leetle Four inch speaker's and replace them with 8 inch woofers and then there you WILL have a M90 verrry simple

aiwa 880 is just as loud as the m70 and sounds better...along with plenty others
The 880 is a fantastic sounding boombox but is not nearly as loud as an M70.
ghettoman - 2011-08-19 02:39
I'm glad someone has mentioned the Jvc Pc5,my pc5 only has 4" bass, but the sound it gives out makes you feel like you are listening to a massive box with 8" speakers,,the bass it gives out is deep,i have alot of boxes with 8" bass and they crap out at alot lesser volume that the pc5,jvc was really clever when they designed this box,it puzzles me how it can produce this much bass out of such a small speaker, alot of companies could have learned alot from jvc..

How does the TPR-950 compare to the similar sized JVC RC-M70?
Like this
Well for starter's it is NOT so Similar sized as it is actually smaller.
The Aiwa TPR 950 Sound's great and has more buttons, switches, lever's, knob's, than the M70 & just what did you want to compare?
litfan - 2011-08-21 15:19
The tpr95o sounds superb. Everyone that saw my collection, seemed to agree, the m70 looked liked what most people`s idea of a ghettoblaster is.
Aiwa TPR 950 Operate's on NINE (9) volts with six (6) (D) Batteries
How about the Distinction of the ability of this to hold it's own in this catagory of Lower Power.
Just searched through Most all of boombox's here - NONE can do what the ( Aiwa TPR 950 ) Does with 9-volt's!
None! have any ability to Record in Manual Mode - Setting Your Own Levels for recording onto Your Cassette Using 6 D Batteries.
Certainly Any "Other Boombox" operatin' on More than "9 VOLTS" is Gonna sound better - Cause It has a Stronger Amplifier - With more volts Current deliverd from it's internal batteries of 12 Volts or better.
And supposedly if you Plugged this into the "main's" or wall socket power, this would play a bit louder/better - But these are "Portable" therefore only operated or considered with BATTERY Operation. If you are gonna plug your boombox into the 120/240 volts electrical then this "Being a Portable" just dont matter anymore cause then this is considered a Home-Stereo and No More a boombox...
I cannnot find anything else to compare this against, so based upon the above finding's I Believe that the "( Aiwa TPR 950 )" Stands in a Class ALL to It's OWN
There is NOTHING Manufactured that Compare's to it! Aiwa TPR 950 - Is in a Class By ITSELF !!! that NO 'other' Manufacturer can touch Sure there are bigger boombox's out there with maybe more features, more power, & yadda...
and the "only Feature Missing; would be - ( Dolby ) - that's it!
As Far as How this Sounds; This Aiwa TPR 950 Sounds VERY WELL Based upon the Fact that it was Designed to Operate on ONLY (9) Volts Battery Power. There is NOTHING Else Comparable in this CLASS !!!!
Again Not 'ours' this is in Germany - This Would Be A VERY Good Bid Buy Classic!!!
We have one and dont need another...
Just showing/sharing Waht we believe to be a Classic
Boombox Unmatched by anything else....
and here is a bit-o-text that will last far longer that the links will...
OK?!!!

What`s alway`s seemed odd to me, is. The tpr990, is the top of the range, but, doesn`t sound the best. The 950, and 968, knock it into a cocked hat.

It's sweet that you have one, Beanie Man. Sadly, I only have 2/5 of the box left due to theft and it's relegation to garage duty. IMO, the secret to the bass was the deep wooden enclosure, the long-throw driver, and the bass reflex duct. I'm going to own one again, I promise you. Enjoy your PC-5!!
