Loudest/bassiest box?
waxer - 2012-02-22 15:07
I'm on the prowl for a nice box... I was looking for a GF777z or similar, of course the JVC m90 or the Big Ben or Conion... the usual grails... but due to funds & the fun of grabbing a bargain, I'm looking into single cassette boxes that are plain LOUD & big on bass...
Opinions on a box?? Thanks
redbenjoe - 2012-02-22 15:31
i think the best bass per price -- by far -
is the JVC Kaboom --
-- about US$ 250 for a real good one-
nothing else, bass-wise comes close -
-----------
for the 'square' traditional boombox look -
get an original edition lasonic 931 -
also pumps out lots of bass for the buck -
maybe US$300 for a decent one
ghettoman - 2012-02-22 16:13
Hey man,i think ira is right, the kaboom really kicks like no other lol..if your not bothered about a one piece or 3 piece, look out for,Jvc Pc5 or Pc55,Panasonic DT680,CT990 ect, there is plenty of boxes out there that sound kool and they are not that expensive,if you are just starting out just get yourself something like a Sharp GF8989 or GF575,they look nice, sound ok,there is plenty of them around, and they dont cost the earth
redbenjoe - 2012-02-22 16:49
yup --all above are good sounding models in the lower price range
brutus442 - 2012-02-22 17:41
Welcome Waxer!
Like BM mentioned, the PC-55/ 550 are POWERFUL boxes...among the best. But for sheer bass, concrete smasshing sound I'd go with RBJ's Kaboom suggestion. IMHO
radio.raheem - 2012-02-22 17:58
agree with the guys...kaboom it is....but make sure it's the old one...the modern one with mp'3 player use is not so good......
brick - 2012-02-22 18:14
Kaboom has tons of base . Pc-55 also has good base . The Pc-55 is held back by the speakers . If you connect bigger speakers to a Pc-55 nothing can touch it . The Pc-55 amp is by far the most powerful . The problem is a good Pc-55 with run around 400-500 bucks .

Agreed Brick. The 55/ 550 is a powerhouse. A Trojan box.....small package, BIG power!!
radio.raheem - 2012-02-22 18:47
love the 55 have 5 or 6 of them and on bigger speakers it is way way better.....but with the coninfined speakers it has...it can't even blink at the kaboom....this is sad for me to say...because the 55 is a HOLY grail of mine...(box i always wanted when i were a grasshoper) if the 55 could sound like the m90 i would be in heaven
redbenjoe - 2012-02-22 18:47
Brick is 100% right !!
i use a pair of tele studio 3 ways with my 55 --
the result is as strong and loud as any battery operated factory
boomer can ever be
radio.raheem - 2012-02-22 19:14
I will add one thing though,,,the features on the pc 55 are unmached by any other box...and that display is just to die for...(when working correctly)
redbenjoe - 2012-02-22 19:54
95% as great as the tele studios on a 550 center section--
is the 55 with missions --MUCH MUCH better BASS than the
jvc stock speakers

I agree Ira, the Missions are almost "made" for the 55. I've matched my 550 with my Polk Audio monitors from my surround sound system and am convinced JVC missed creating the finest boombox ever. All they needed was a little "Kaboom" coupled with the 55/ 550 amp.
Nothing could have touched it....

that looks stunning ira....i have about 12 mission bass cones here....i may try some in my 55....tried some sony yrs ago...yes they did improve things alot,,,but i still wasn't happy...(used the same bass that oldschool 69 used in his 55....
what's the mn of those missions ira????
radio.raheem - 2012-02-22 20:30
One last question...wich is the better centre section the 55 or the 550???? i have both
chris69 - 2012-02-22 21:01
Speaking in terms of one piece vintage 1980's boombox's...not kaboom's or 3 piece units. The CONION C100F is the loudest by far and trust me i've owned alot including the JVC M90 and several Conions amongst a ton of others. The JVC M90 has 40 watts total peak power and the CONION C100F has 45 Watts Total. Not hard to do the math or hear the difference in person either, despite all the arguments. The Conion kicks ass every time.

i dont think anyone could tell the difference in sound 55 vs. 550 -
they may be identical --
to me it was a 'looks' thing -
the black 550 looks stunning with the silver tele studios.
and the silver 55 looks 'right' with the grey missions
----------------
as for the big $$ conion -- i think ?? this new member is asking
for a much lesser price type box
chris69 - 2012-02-22 21:12
You can't compare a high powered 3 piece unit or a more recent Kaboom to a vintage one piece boombox. It's not the same thing at all.... it's like comparing apples and oranges
radio.raheem - 2012-02-22 21:13
m90 sounds better to me than the conion chris.....although the conion is louder>> but distorts at over half vol.....all this is my personal opinion though
btw did you know the conion uses the same amps as the 777...just an fyj

The units are the same but the base drivers in the speakers are different . The 550 came with cheaper drivers . I relpaced mine with 55 drivers and now my 550 sounds exactly like my 55 .

I always find the M90 vs C100 debate kinda funny. The 2 boomboxes were designed with different customers in mind. The M90 was obviously designed with the more discerning listener in mind and caters to a more upscale customer. The C100 is all brute force and lots of chrome. The M90 has a cleaner, more balanced and quality sound. it has better stereo separation and some of the best sounding highs in the business. The C100 has a more raw sound, and the power comes on strong and much earlier in the volume spectrum. I prefer quality and good sound so the M90 gets my vote. Those who prefer a more aggressive street machine will probably prefer the C100. Either way both of these boomboxes sit atop the 1 piece boombox food chain.

I have come close to selling the few good boxes i have chris...meaning my whole collection.....but i have gone days without food to avoid this...(no egsageration)
i know i can be an over oppinioned guy at times...but i love what i have as much as anybody else...anyway i sold a fair few off to help people,CHEAP,,they only sold em
on in a few days...so i won't be making that mistake again...(touch wood)
mellymelsr - 2012-02-22 22:21
...as for my recommendation on a loud boombox with lots of bass that won't hurt your pockets too much, I would recommend a Lasonic TRC 931. The 2nd edition seems to be the most popular and can always be found on ebay for a couple hundred buck in pretty good condition. They are very loud and have loose woofers for a powerful bass kick. The eq can be adjusted for good sound but they are not the best built boomboxes, but they are big, have lots of chrome, and are very good on batteries.

Guys I can't see a picture or any info on the Kaboom anywhere (except the new one)
Any links? Thanks

Oh by the way, I'm after a mid 80s classic style, maybe I have seen the JVC but I don't like that style really... I'll look at some of the others suggested.

Is the Lasonic rebadged under different manufacturers?
Is this one?
