SW collectors are a serious bunch and with the big collectors $$ is not an issue. The M90 has a nice clean balanced sound and very loud where as the CONION is agressive, flashy and a true street machine in every sense. I might go for another m90 someday when the price goes back down to a reasonable level but there is no way that any boombox is worth the $3000.00 that they have been selling for lately.

The M90 has a cleaner, more balanced and quality sound. it has better stereo separation and some of the best sounding highs in the business. The C100 has a more raw sound, and the power comes on strong and much earlier in the volume spectrum. I prefer quality and good sound so the M90 gets my vote. Those who prefer a more aggressive street machine will probably prefer the C100. Either way both of these boomboxes sit atop the 1 piece boombox food chain.

your so right chris i have been collecting sw radios for years some beauties too

isolator42 - 2012-02-29 05:07

I was just about to moan about the fact that the D8614 is a 3pc, but of course, it isn't.

If there was an award for the 1pc boomer that tried the hardest to look like a 3pc, the D8614 would have it all wrapped up...

lav.loo - 2012-02-29 09:26

yeah i totally agree with you ISO, the d8614 really does look like a 3 piecer no question btw the one i mentioned above as just sold on epay for 89 bricks, great price for a great box.

The amp on the JVC PC-55 is capable of so much more!  I remember hooking it up to a pair of 15" Pioneer CS-99As for fun about 25 years ago, and it didn't break a sweat - in fack my buddy and I held candles in front of the woofers just to watch them air movement blow them out.  It was then and there I swore I would go to my grave with this boombox.  In my college dorm I ran the JVC using some Paradigm 3se speakers, and it was the best.  Last summer I DJ'd a Hot Tub Time Machine party in a back yard with a JVC PC-55, JVC PC-550 and two Akai PJ-35s.  That JVC is still in service today, sitting above my computer hooked up to some custom cabinets with 6.5" drivers.  Way better sound than the factory speakers, and just enough bass to make the wife and kids complain.

JVC PC-55 = home stereo with a handle

The Panasonic RX-C100 is worth considering, and it won't cost you too much. It's one of the loudest and hardest hitting boxes I own.

That is weird, because there are a lot of portable radios that get better SW reception than an M90.

chris69 - 2012-03-06 12:44

Yes but to a shortwave "collector" it's not always all about reception. The same as loudness and size is not what it's all about to a boombox collector. It's about having a nice big collection with lots of different models shortwave collectors also like to have all different types
