what bothers you the most

driptip - 2012-03-25 07:58

guys, as a collector there are some things or problems with a radio that just bother the hell out of me, such as broken antenna holder, rust in the batt compartment, antenna tip broken off, and i would like to know what is the one thing that bothers you guys the most.

lets try to make this fun, and keep it clean.

deliverance - 2012-03-25 08:03

scratches , antenna broken , and the worst this box is mint !

chris69 - 2012-03-25 08:30

Damn i had a big grin on my face until i seen to keep it clean

Actually what i hate more than anything is when i pay a couple hundred $$$ for one, then take it apart and discover that some idiot who didn't have a clue what he was doing...tinkered around inside. Cut wires that didn't need to be cut, made modifications that were totaly useless and senseless. It's not only amatuer self proclaimed experts that do dumb modifications but also approved repair shops.

radio.raheem - 2012-03-25 08:51

Paying £500 for boxes...and my £5 box slaughters the lot.......missing doors conion draws and my undies

mrupscale1 - 2012-03-25 09:21

#1 thing i hate is that i started collecting so late in the game!!

Real answer is getting a mint unit with a bad channel or a switch that has a short. Any unit with a bad line in/out is a deal breaker.

deliverance - 2012-03-25 09:40

led"s  quote  its never been touched honest !  like one of mine over spray all over it and sellotaped wire connections to the speakers

bison - 2012-03-25 09:43

pitting...got to be the worst thing you can diagnose your radio with

chris69 - 2012-03-25 11:55

I would have to say that dented speaker grills is right up there at the top. Rusted grills are not a problem...sand and paint but dents are sometimes hard to remove

chris69 - 2012-03-25 11:57

Of course it's like matching paint colours... you have to find out which brand of beer was used on the speaker 30 years ago and if it was light or dark brew ect.. can be tough

Speaker rot, broken decks, and that God awfull cigarette smell.

samsnite - 2012-03-25 12:17

Tuners that do not keep the frequency... that drives me nuts!

And what comes to recent aquired goods, smell. You pick up a nice piece at the flea (where everything smells bad), come home just to notice you have bought an ashtray... yuckety-yuck!

lav.loo - 2012-03-25 12:26

yep... nicotine stained boxes and the smell that accompanies em...absolutely soul destroying!!

retrodos - 2012-03-25 12:38

Nicotine, as it get all in the insides and then the dents or dings and the seller fail to put that in the description.

incorrect packing is my personal beef as well. You see it in an advert, buy it based on it's percieved condition only to have the box delivered in shambles!!

driptip - 2012-03-25 13:11

and what about the cigarrete burns? for me thats a deal breaker.

bison - 2012-03-25 13:21

it bothers me nobody knows what that crown i sold ten years ago was...it was bigger than a 970,980..no handle

You can paint them.........like a certain someone...lol

ghettoman - 2012-03-25 16:37

i once bought a crown sz5100 about 10 years ago, when i got it there were bare wires inside the battery compartment, when i took the back off,the wires were attatched to the speakers, someone must have connected external speakers to it,did'nt really bother me,i sorted it out easy, some things dont bother me..

but the things that do is pitting on the sharps do big time, bad packing does abit but i dont really care aslong as it gets to me in one piece..

the one doc said is my most hated,i bought a sharp GF9191 and the cassette was running slow,i tried everything, swapped the motor, swapped the deck, tried everything but it still ran slow,in the end i had to bodge the motor with a bigger pully, its the only way i could get it to run at the propper speed..

Yellowing on the back of my GF535 abnnoys me because there is nothing i can do about it,and cig burns is most annoying..i've never smoked..

lol x2 at dell...deffo not paint

ghettoman - 2012-03-25 20:07

Speaker rott does bother me abit, but it also excites me too,i enjoy refoaming them, because if they are nice speakers,i get satisfaction knowing i've restored them, and secured their future for at least another 10-20 years, plus some boxes dont like replacement speakers, some boxes run and sound best with their original speakers..

That yellowing isn't from cigarettes, is it?

ghettoman - 2012-03-25 20:33

hi,i dont think so,i think its more to do with being left too close to a window or in the sun, alot of the time it happends mainly to sharp..i got my GF535 shipped from japan, but it can happen in any country..

lav.loo - 2012-03-26 02:59

ye the yellowing on the rear is a bummer, that's the only prob with my d8614, like you say BM, too much time sat on a windowsill

chris69 - 2012-03-26 03:10

Yeah i've bought quite a few from people who never smoked but the backs were yellowed from being turned towards the sun. It's the type of plastic too, some like the Lasonic 920 seem to yellow worse than others.

had that on a 9090 , but managed to buy a another one then make a good one out of two

chris69 - 2012-03-26 03:53

On this i was lucky and had another back cover but most of the trim had fallen off the front so i had to reglue all of that back on. The spare tape storage drawer had a crack that you could tell was fresh and happened in shipping plus i had to replace some other parts also. Over-all it was a nightmare but i finally got it all sorted and made it into a nice fully working 7980 but i was just lucky that i had a parts unit or it would have cost me a small fortune.

It's a few years back but one experience i'll never forget for sure more from the fact that the Postmaster and seller both were dishonest. That postmaster was later forced to retire...
