lav.loo - 2012-05-03 03:14
does any member here have both these top notch boxes who is willing to give some input on the sound quality difference and say which one is the winner.
i personally think the d8614 sounds that bit better but would love to hear other peoples take on this one, cheers

SFG as you know, I have both of these but I think your not going to like my repsonse lol.
The m70 is a different class in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I love the sound on the d8614 like you do but the m70 is deeper, clearer on the highs and just has an overall clarity that is hard to beat according to my ears anyhow
Just my 2p.

i value your opinion mate and i'm sure you won't be the first here. i have a feeling your opinion is going to get a lot of back up by m70 fans
next time i'm over at yours maybe you can fire them both up and maybe il'e be proven wrong lol.
remember the m70 i had was'nt a minty like yours so that may of had something to do with my decision on the sound quality' the woofers was a bit rotten

The M70 oozes quality in its sound and controls. If you are fortunate to find a 100% working example you will see why it is such a popular boombox amongst collectors and is a must have for any who have heard one. I have (5) M70's and love them all. The sound quality and power for a box this size is second to none. There is a reason it is my absolute favorite radio. The highs are crisp and clean. The bass is punchy and solid. The cassette deck sounds fantastic and is bullet proof. The volume gets extremely loud without much distortion...just a fantastic boombox.

I have two versions and noted on other thread there is a slight difference,
but both had same quality of sound that is very open with no boxyness to give away that it is an actual boombox.
I have been comparing it to everything i have and still find it hard to beat in clarity and openness of sound.
I don't think it can be beat by any box of cone size under 7".

A little late on the reply but I can shed a little light. I own both radios. If you ask me it's apples & oranges. What I noticed is the they both have clear good sound, possibly the Philips being at tad "crispier" in sound (this may depend), but when you start turning up both radios at a certain volume, the JVC 70 IMHO easily maintains the better sound at a higher volume. The JVC 70 has a more hard hitting bass/treble without the distortion that I notice the Philips starts to occur when turned up. I never knew about the Philips 8614 until one day I just randomly online saw a picture. I fell in love with the looks and said i have to have it. I wasn't disappointed with it and it's a keeper for me. I actually want another one

I was just here reading and thinking about: do not forget about the aka of the Philips 8614, the Magnavox D8623 as I am just here have happen to have the identical pair there already and the m70 on the upper shelf so here's a pic of all 3 together as this thread need's a picture

Never knew that James. Now I want the Magnavox D8623

In the boombox era, basically I have come to understand that Philips is Magnavox in the USA & Magnavox is Philips overseas like in the UK
michiel - 2015-05-05 15:26
There already was a company called Philco in US, so Philips was not allowed to use the name Philips. First they used the brand name Norelco in the US. Later they acquired Magnavox and used that name for boxes.

Thank you for more concise information, than I was trying to verbalize ^ above

This is good to know. Now I'll look at Magnavoxs in a whole new spectrum

I heard one of these for the first time at a collectors house. Not a fan to be honest. Very plain looking and lacking some charisma. As for the sound?...well after playing for a few seconds the tape got stuck and that was that. Whilst it was playing it sounded ok but nowhere near an M70.
Oh well.
