RX DT 707
vlad - 2012-05-24 01:35
Hello guys ! I'm new around here but i really like this site . It's nice to see so many people that share the same passion in one place !
Anyway here is the thing : i like boomboxes . Alot ! Especially eggs (i know that this fact will not help me make new friends )
So , i bought myself a Panasonic . A "rx dt 707" in very good condition .I was looking for one in mint condition for YEARS !!!!! I'm happy that i found him !
About this boombox - good things :
1.It looks OK if you like this kind of stuff.
2.Quality is very good , it has parts from Technics in it and that makes a difference . The CD player and cassette decks work like a dream (and the belts are not changed !!!!!!!).Build like a tank very large and very heavy - 8 kilos without batteries !
3.Sound quality - what can i say - everybody probably knows by now that the sound is fantastic . It's amaizing that a box has this kind of bass output - very deep , and you can adjust it .Also the higs are very crisp , makes you forget that it this dose not have a dedicated tweeter. Overall a balanced sound and a great experience in terms of sound.Ofcourse the "techno surround" button makes wonders ...... sometimes.
And now the bad things - yes they are present unfortunatelly.
1. The upper pannel , when closed , is a little bit off centred (you can see that the gap on the left side is bigger than on the right). And that is a common problem whit this model (is not that big of a problem but this was a very expensive unit when it was new so i wouldn't expect this)
Also the eject buttons on the decks have a very cheap felling , are unprecise and you have to push realy hard to do their job (maybe tis is a problem only on mine), but again - i wouldn't expect this!
2.The sound : depending on the music ,at realy high volume - it distorts . Not much but it does . I have the feeling that if the speakers were bigger , this problem would not be present . On this unit they are not rated but i have another Panasonic , a RX-ED 77 with roughly the same speaker size and those ar rated at 7.5 w each .Probably on this unit they have 10w each - i'm guessing here . I belive that i will buy another one from ebay and try to put on it 15w speakers.
The "techno surround" button - i don't use it most of the time (all it appears to do is to distort even more and add a echo to the music )
Overall this is a fantastic unit with great value in my opinion , a well balanced machine !
Everyone should consider buying one - they are fantastic
I cant post any pictures of the unit right now (maybe later i will manage to post some pictures from the seller , from eBay - hope that's OK)
p.s. Sorry for my english , i am from Romania

try to get used to the surround mode --at quiet volumes
it make the music come alive
vlad - 2012-05-24 06:17
From what i hear It may be something out there that has the same sound (if not better) : JVC rc-xc3
The owners of this boomer say that this model has a killer sound !
Perhaps someone here has this unit and can tell us if this is true......
redbenjoe - 2012-05-24 06:26
never saw or heard that jvc -
can you post up a photo of it

welcome vlad, iv'e never heard a bad word about the 707, panasonic quality through and through, not my taste personally but still i would'nt mind hearing one
retro - 2012-05-24 08:45
Welcome to the forum Vlad, I've had the opportunity to listen to the RX-DT707 in the past, and i have to say it's very impressive, but never the JVC RX-c3. I have seen pictures of it on various Japanese egg sites however. Thanks for the info, I'll keep an eye out for one.

Hello guys ! love the picture with the eggs .
About that JVC - there is one for sale on eBay in Germany but without the remote and not in very good condition and the seller will not answer to me to any questions about the cassette decks (probably means they don't work) ; at 100 euros plus shipping i don't want to buy just a project
The odd thing is that this model it appear to be very hard to find but online you can find lots of spare parts . This may turn into a personal grail........

welcome VLad, the 707 is one of my favs cobra type, if you have a chance i would recomend the rx-dt 75 It is also a panasonic cobra,
i know , i watched videos with them in action . I am looking for a mint DT75 like my DT707. A very good boombox this DT75 . Can't wait to have my hands on it
That's the first video that i've seen on youtube that made me decide that i want one !!!
Unfortunately i only found one in Germany at 300 euros - and that is too expensive for me right now so i had to settle for the DT707 . And that is ok for now
had one of those...good box and better than the dt707...but it dosen't take battries..so it's pointless imho
a better boombox than the 707 ..... WOOOW , now that's something !!!!! A mint one popped up on eBay yesterday . But without batteries it does seem kind of pointless .
"a better boombox than 707" is always tempting even without batteries .......
radio.raheem - 2012-05-24 23:27
might not be better but just as good...mine cost £1....diddn't have it long because of the battry thing...the 707 is still my fave egg...as it takes battries,,,had 4...3 mint...but there gone now...i guess i just grew out of them

nevone - 2014-04-23 12:56
Hello Vlad and welcome. From Romania perhaps?
Agreed with Andy the DT75 and DT95 are the definitely ones to have from the Cobras, however that 707 packs a very decent punch.
andyboombox - 2014-04-24 08:24
well my dt75 fell through but id have one in a heartbeat again
fabiochavez - 2015-07-08 07:49
i just got a 707 today, but i wonder why i can take 2 different kind of batterys?!
should i get both kinds or just the big ones? i think beside the 10 D Cells it can also take 4 AAs or something, what is that about?
and about the distortion at very high volumes: does a cleanup and check if all parts are tightened up maybe do something about that? any handling tips`?
p.s. any chance to get a non-expensive remote control for it?
boeingman777 - 2015-07-08 12:05
The AA's are most likely for timer/tuner memory.
davebush - 2015-07-08 12:05
the 4 x aa`s are probably for the tuner memory
fabiochavez - 2015-07-11 01:36
will it increase the overall battery lifetime if i include them?
boomboxtaff - 2015-07-11 01:40

I very much doubt it. The panasonic has the same set up, and it's just for the clock and the memory.
litfan - 2015-07-11 06:00
The AA batteries, are, for all memories. Whatever settings you put it on, it will be the same, when you turn it back on.
fabiochavez - 2015-07-11 09:05
thanks guys!
on distortion:
the sound of the 707 is VERY satisfying, though it has its limits on very high volumes.
is there any chance that a proper overhaul treatment will at least reduce some of the buzz? except for a little dent in the speaker protection grid, the my 707 is in pretty good shape, though i got the feeling that the buzz that kicks in at a certain loudness threshold is related to case vibrations or moving parts, i wonder if i should open it up and check if everything is tightened up properly? (i have only little experience with opening up electronic devices)
boomboxtaff - 2015-07-11 09:54
Does the battery compartment holder come off? try taking it off to see if it improves. The hitachi 3D80 sounds better with the battery compartment off at higher levels.
litfan - 2015-07-11 12:50
Very easy, to take apart. The front come's off, and, the speakers come out easy, giving you chance to clean, and get any dents out. Good luck.
fabiochavez - 2015-07-12 01:31
should i care to give the speakers any treatment, e.g. like carefully brushing of the dust or should i rather leave the membranes untouched?
litfan - 2015-07-12 06:24
You should be ok to use a fine brush, as, the speakers are mica coated.
vlad - 2015-07-12 11:33

Hello!
The distortion on high volumes , from what I've seen and heard on oher Panasonic rx dt models , is normal . I suspect that they used a slightly more powerful amplifier that the speakers can handle , hence the distortion . Of course the level of distortion depends on the type of music you are listening . The source can be very important as well : on auxiliary mode tends to distort on much lower level .
Also , if the previous owner used it at max volume for very long time , there is a chance that the rubber membrane of the speakers is cracked . If you clean the speakers look for tiny cracks . If are present , then you must replace the speakers . This can be hard as they have a very unusual impedance : 2.7 Ω . You can always use a donor boombox . Almost all low range rx dt boomboxes from that era use 2.7 Ω speakers . You just have to pay attention to the diameter . Using other modern speakers that have other impedance can result in a loss of power .
Good luck with your Panasonic !
fabiochavez - 2015-07-12 15:42
auxiliary mode tends to distort more? should i use the mic in instead to connect mp3 players?
vlad - 2015-07-12 22:40

Auxiliary mode is OK as long as you don't use the equalizer of the mp3 source and you adjust the mp3 volume . Depending on your equipment , you will find your own settings . Personally , I use a "Philips AEA2000/12" connected to the auxiliary port , for wireless connection , and the results are very good .
litfan - 2015-07-13 01:00
Mine, does'nt distort at all. You must be listening to it at deafening levels?
vlad - 2015-07-13 04:04
Three quarters of the volume from time to time is loud enough for me (and bearable for my neighbors). No distortion at this level . Any louder and it starts to distort . My point , in the first post , was that with other boomboxes from Philips , Sony , JVC you can go right to the max with no problem . It was just an observation .
litfan - 2015-07-13 04:59
Sorry vlad, but, for me, any stereo on full, is unbearable. I have heard many old classics on high volume, and, they all distort. We must hear differently?
vlad - 2015-07-13 05:47
I don't know if we hear differently . I don't listen to my boomboxes / audio system at full volume , but , from time to time , I like to listen to certain tunes louder . The boxes that I owned and tested at full volume were newer boxes (mid 90's).It is a test I'm doing with all my new boxes , a curiosity of mine .... and since I never owned a box with such a high acquisition price , I was surprised that on very loud volume it distorts , that's all.
fabiochavez - 2015-07-13 09:03
well, my purpose is to take the boombox outside and get it to play the music as loud as possible without hitting the distortion treshold. Im using a Ipod Classic Gen 5. with rockbox installed. By the way, im not having trouble with the 707 id just like to tickle every last db out of it that i can get with reasonably clear sound quality.
