JVC DC-7 Speaker Upgrade to KLIPSCH

This is my first "Real" boombox as my many others are all mini boomers ( am Walkman hoarder) . Although the 1982/84 JVC DC-7 is relatively lower power output at 10watt/ch 20watt/ch peak I was not looking to greatly increase the loudness as much as better the sound quality which was IMO lacking this model (although I dont own any other larger or high end boxes to compare). The original JVC had two 4.5 in (12 cm ) woofers and a tiny .75 in ( 2 cm) tweeter at 6 ohms info from Svc. Manual I acquired. I can fit a max 6.5 in woofer in orig. speaker housings. I will have to enlarge the holes and I hope this does not offend the purist too much but did not buy box as investment but to use and enjoy. I based my search for bookshelf speakers of higher end quality. Got lucky and found on ebay guy was local 20 mins north of my home met him at his flea market booth so saved shipping. I decided on the KLIPSCH KG 1.5 bookshelf which originally cost $390 USD in 1995 (adjusted for inflation thats $575 USD today WOW) I believe the JVC was orig. close to $500 due to the linear tracking turntable so this set up with the Klipsch at orig. cost is EXPENSIVE. I have a total new speakers and $65 (local Craigs List) purchase of JVC of $115 WOOHOO. I picked these Walnut cabinets ( BEAUTIFUL going to turn them into Walkman Showcases GRIN ) for $50 bucks. I know I will lose a little volume because they are 8 ohm instead of 6 but at volume it will be easier on the amp to drive the 8 ohm load I believe. They were very highly rated and reviewed at the time. They are reasonably efficient at 90 dB.
I have hooked up my Sony D-50 era correct CD player into the Aux input and it works fantastically with very clear sound and volume a bit higher than the FM radio even. I have done 3 videos with links below for comparison of sound from ORIGINAL SPEAKERS then with the KLIPSCH (in Klipsch housings) then 3rd video I purchased on ebay a pair of 2.5 Piezo speakers that have matching freq. response of the tweeter in the Klipsch so they will be wired into crossovers transfered into JVC speakers from Klipsch. The Klipsch although excellent sounding I love really crisp detailed highs so opted for $10 incl. shipping for Piezo's even though I know they are generally frowned upon for quality sound systems . Note am running wire out back of speakers with easy disconnects so I can just enjoy the pure correctly balance sound of the Klipsch. I will in next few weeks mount the Klipsch and Piezos into JVC speaker boxes. The JVC boxes are about 25 % less interior volume than the Klipsch so I expect the bass will drop off a little but dont think it will be noticable much. Both the Klipsch and JVC boxes are bass reflex with ports so were good on that switch. Also the JVC speaker housings are 5/8 inch WOOD not plastic so the good Klipsch speakers will still be in a wood housing. With the much heavier Klipsch speakers and crossovers the JVC will now weigh with batteries just over 42 POUNDS ( 19 KILOS ! ) Have to be a Body builder to carry this on your shoulder.....

MY IMPRESSIONS
JVC ORIGINAL SPEAKERS
The bass is that empty thump no real pounding or feel of bass. The mid/high end was actually reasonable. You will SO notice the difference in the bass about 14 seconds into Klipsch video MY GOD the bass is AWESOME. Let me know how it compares to the HIGH end BIG boxes. Keep in mind video is with my point and shoot Fuji F100FD camera so the mic is hardly capturing quality sound.
KLIPSCH vs. Original JVC speakers
When I first heard the Klipsch hooked up to the JVC it was OMG the bass is amazing from these bookshelf speakers! The over all clarity , sound stage and imaging is simply light years ahead of the JVC orig. speakers. The system does play definitely loudly with the Klipsch but distortion starts to be heard on these much better speakers earlier so generally 6 ( vol. 0-10) is max setting. For all 3 test video's the volume was set at 5 which I think you all will agree is plenty loud for a boomer. This thing sounds more like a quality component home system ( especially with vol. at 2 or 3) than a portable boombox with batteries
KLIPSCH AND PIEZO's
Well I did not expect the added difference of the two piezo's to make such a dramatic difference. The highs are so detailed especially the 14,000 up range that at higher volume I switched out the HIGH tone button. Amazing what real quality speakers can do that you dont need low or high freq. boost or 5 band EQ's. Music was David Bowie ( A Classic for me) same 3 songs for all three test videos.
I WOULD WELCOME THE FORUMS INPUT on what you HONESTLY ( fine to say what you hear is wrong or I did that is not right as am learning and newbee at boomers) SO take a listen and tell me what you think of my solution and also what think of adding the Piezo's for $10 bucks was a good or not good idea. Thanks all for your input. I will post in few weeks a final video with 3 new speakers installed in original speaker boxes leaving orig. appearance.

I loved the DC-33L, I used to mess about with one every week at the Local Asda store in the 80's, always wanted it but at £250 my dad couldn't afford it
That was what brought me to this site when I was searching for the model etc on the net, not too long I got one from ebay. I was quite dissapointed with the sound when I got it, I remembered it sounding better in Asda, was even more gutted to find they had no tweeters when the speaker fronts looked so good
Anyway, my mate said he knew someone that had one and how good it was, he said it never had any feedback and sounded great on loud, and Linear Tracking, I thought he must of got mixed up
Then when I saw the DC-7 I realised he was talking about this one you have, so I got one to see how it sounded, very very dissapointed with it for the size and sold it quick, still have the DC-33 which is hugely let down by the rock solid speakers, they hardly move at all, no wonder they are so bad, plug in a good set of speakers and the 33 is a nice quality system with good power
Just need one in the Box and I will be happy, like all mine in original boxes
