What is the best boombox you have ever heard? (d cells)

radio.raheem - 2012-09-05 05:21

had them all and for me it has to be the jvc dp200 (kaboom) has the clarity other kabooms lack making it the perfect box for me...(knocks spots of all the grails)

anyway have any of you guys heard any better???

in second place goes to my jvc hyper bass thing (actually has more bass than the kaboom and clarity) but sadly not loud enough.....forgive me i cant remember the model number off hand.....but it's frequancy goes down to a propper 60 hz....both these 2 boxes make the grails rather redundent to me...and im actually glad i cashed in and sold all my grals now (only have my rather ill crown 970) left (as good as m90 looks way nicer)....as they just diddn't cut it for me (apart from my much loved gf1000) for personal reasons.....anyway over to you guys...have you heard anything way better than m90's and the like???i have

ao - 2012-09-05 05:46

Reno, I suspect your confusing plastic boosted bass and shrill exaggerated treble for good sound.  Modern stereos i.e. the crap you can currently buy in Currys and sadly your Kaboom boost the frequencies your ears like to hear i.e. punch-bass and snare highs.  These systems are like candy dispensers for kids and the current popular music Euro-techno-rap is the candy.  Play some orchestral music on your Kaboom & you'll see what I mean, there will be a total loss of huge chunks of your frequency range.

Anyone who enjoys listening to good music wouldn't be able to listen to a system like this for very long.  Imagine a Happy Meal for your ears

Boomboxes were never really designed to sound any good, they were all about style and fashion, it was just by sheer chance that some sounded 'alright' e.g. Aiwa TPR-959 etc  It was more a case of which ones you could tolerate the longest.  So, your question really should be 'which is the least shit sounding of your boomboxes?'.  I have a few, they all sound awful, which is why I spend thousands on my home systems.  It's worth considering also that a good boombox can reproduce less than 10% of the frequency range of a good walkman, but I would say that.

deliverance - 2012-09-05 05:52

aiwa tpr"s take some beating for clarity ,  they have such a warm sound ,  sanyo m9998,  9990 also sound fab on cells

maxx134 - 2012-09-05 05:52

And Very interesting as I would have never considered a kaboom due to just looks and that there newer design BUT this is interesting so it would be nice to post pic .
For clarity on tape section I would say the Toshiba bombeat wx-1 had a version of DBX wich was amazing in clarity.  Although the tuner was not as clear as a JVC 90 in my opinion.
The speakers though were very nice sounding.

deliverance - 2012-09-05 05:55

the kaboom decks are crap .

radio.raheem - 2012-09-05 05:57

i have heard all kinds of music on the kaboom chris lad....i like classical for egsample....it sounds fantastic.....the highs are not shrill as you say.....there not as good as the m90 but there much better than my crown 970......have you ever heard iso's dp200 chris????

over 10 people have said i made the wright discusion selling my grails (as soon as they heard my kaboom) when i had the other kabooms lad (not dp200) they thought my old m90 was the winner because of the mids and highs...not so with my new kaboom lad......i have had people offer me more than i paid for it....simply because they have been blown away...i had over 5 of the other kabooms chris...i sold them all because i thought the m90 was just better....not so in this case my friend

edit and those stupid drumpads....thet make it look cheap

deliverance - 2012-09-05 06:14

i might ruffle a few feathers here its just if i want to listen to tapes/vinyl ,   i will use hi fi no box sounds as good and never will do ,   dont get me wrong i love some of my boxes and like listening to them, boxes are meant to be used out side and remind me of a time when things in general were more care free.

redbenjoe - 2012-09-05 06:15

for me --the tosh s90 has a beautiful quality sound than can be

listened to for many types of music -- for many straight hours

radio.raheem - 2012-09-05 06:19

i agree 100 percent del......when you have owned over  £2000 worth of speakers (speakers alone) no boombox will win....and here is something more amasing.......this will amuse agent orange.....a damn good pair of headphones and a good walkman (not your dd9) sounds way better than any box

I only wish mine had worked propperly all those yrs ago my friend

maxx134 - 2012-09-05 06:47

I agree of course home HiFi stereo has the ultimate sound, but value drops like a rock.
Also real quality headphones have fantastic sound comparable to any HiFi stereo.
But boombox are a special personal and wonderful experience in themselves,
My favorite sounding is the Panasonic7000.
Excellent clarity and slightly deeper bass than an jvc m70

deliverance - 2012-09-05 07:00

the 7000 is a looker thats for sure

redbenjoe - 2012-09-05 07:11

agree about the panny 7000 --

a box we can listen to 24/7

radio.raheem - 2012-09-05 07:52

has anybody heard the tdk 3 speaker thing????it has no deck but im considering buying one.....as it takes 12 d cells....is it better than the kaboom???lower richer bass

litfan - 2012-09-05 11:51

I think, there`s a box, called the sony cfs-f40, which is reputed to sound awesome .

radio.raheem - 2012-09-05 12:03

And a guy who ain't heavy but he is my brother

bods1 - 2012-09-05 12:21

Panasonic 7000 ones do sound nice, probably will regret selling mine at some point

I think the biggest let down on pretty much all boxes is the speakers

Stick some half reasonable speakers on many of them and the sound changes a hell of a lot, infact I think they should of made speakers for the 3 piece boxes just for when you had it in home, but some decent ones that were matched for the amps as some are low ohms

They must of faced quite a few challenges when designing them, the size, weight, quality etc

The sony FH ones are ok, but too deep to carry round and having to swap the psu for battery one isn't a good design. Quite powerfull but I don't think the bass is nice, to hard, I like nice soft bass.

The Technics SA-C05 with some medium Technics speakers on it has great sound quality, Nice bass, mid and treble and as good as many midi hi-fi systems, better than many too.

I'm not into all this spend loads on speaker cable, gold plated connectors etc, cos to me it makes no difference that i've ever heard.

JVC DC-33L sounds better with Sony FH-7 MK II speakers on it than the FH-7 does itself.

Thats my way of really testing how good many of the systems really are, compare them all on the same half decent speakers

traveler - 2012-09-08 09:51

(( Operating on 'D cells' )) Have you heard the Panasonic RX-A2 ?

It is Not really considered a traditional boombox, but it Operate's on Ten (10) D cell batteries. An it is truely Portable though, (you cannot carry it while Listening to it) One person can carry it's Two case's.

Because of the size of the speakers and for the fact that the sound is baffled using 'acoustic suspension' into individual sealed box's unlike (in a traditional boombox where both woofers share the same backpressure and may be considered 'ported' due to the fact that the cabinetry of the boombox is not truely sealed and sound can escape through the back area grill of the average boombox) and the depth of the amplifier, this sounds really good for a Portable studio Stereo system on Batteries.

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 10:34

bods i agree speakers are the biggest let down on most boxes...

traveler the a2 is a great box....prolly the most powerful.....but it's not portable unless you bolt the speakers on....and it dosen't have enough bass imho but still a great box man

I hear the new TDK box takes other boxes to the cleaners, but I have yet to actually listen to one. Maybe I'll go check one out on my day off. I also second the Panasoinc RX-A2.

i woul love it if you could check one out for me retro...btw have you heard a kaboom...to get some refrance???

retro - 2012-09-08 11:07

I listened to the original Kaboom years ago, so I have an idea of what it sounds like. If the TDK lives up to the hype, I'm going to purchase one also.

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 11:13

super can't wait for your report....i know it will be loud enough.....my main concern is quality of bass and clarity

retro - 2012-09-08 11:26

Can anyone else comment on the sound of the TDK three speaker box?

driptip - 2012-09-08 11:33

Radio raheem, i used to own the dp-100 and the 200 , i always thought they sound the same, amazing bass, my problem tho is having the woofers on the sides and i cant really enjoy it unless i turn the unit on the side, that bothers the hell out of me.

i recently got the national 5700,  the sound is ok (a little low for my taste) very good highs, but what i really enjoy is the design of it, as the rest of the boxes, the sound could be crap .

i dont look into the sound quality, i am more interested in the appearence and the history behind them.

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 11:52

driptip the dp100 200 are the same but the 200 has led's

if i place the 200 on the floor hugo the room shakes lol....i angle it on it's back so i get the full bass and the clarity....

i wouldn't be so conserned about sound quality my man...but these days things like the m90 cost to much....i used to get them for about £250...that i could live with...but when people are paying £500 and up, these days...no chance they would have to sound damn good to fetch that imho ofcourse...if your not bothered about sound like me then buy the lot....haha i forgot you already have hehe

i am glad we agree on the wall shaking with the kaboom, and yes i am not bothered with the sound.

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 13:01

after reading reviews its getting more tempting retro....is there anywhere cheaper than uk ebay.....£200 £250 and id buy one

retro - 2012-09-08 13:20

MONO said it tops the M90, hmmm very interesting.

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 14:40

it would need to be way better than the m90.....the dp200 is

claret.badger - 2012-09-08 16:09

Got to say the Technics sa c05l is a very cultured sounding box with a great deck - but you DO need the D cell battery pack - which I don't

the bass drivers on the kabooms are on the ends no? - So it doesn't matter which way they be pointing as bass is omnidirectional

Panasonic RX CT990 is a great box too - not seen this bad boy mentioned yet

Maxx134's statement about hifi value dropping - shows obviously you ain't buying the right gear.

Bods1 statement about speakers is halfway correct - the problem with boomboxes is the speaker "enclosures" for sure - I've yet to see a 1 piece box with proper enclosed speakers - they all leak into the main box.

A proper audiophile boombox would be something to behold

. . . and please don't let anyone mention that startled Furby hombrew box being hocked by Mr Fast Car Kiss My Guns Miltary

radio.raheem - 2012-09-08 16:17

agree ct990 better than the grails but not as loud

mr.vu - 2012-09-09 01:15

I think, TOSHIBA RT- S651 is the youngest candidate

he must be in the list box or cable

ken80s - 2012-09-09 03:42

I personally feel that 80s boombox is still the best, I would conclude Denon H-5 the best in its era. This model can deliver exceptional sound quality with the 2 way speakers, powerful bass from the 4 inch woofer and the clarity of the high freqs. I really missed this boombox, wish I could find one again.

kaboom!....smarties tube with speakers!

so many music vids etc still using old skool real eighties boomboxes as there cool and retro unlike the modern looking kaboom

to me the kaboom would look so out of place in my collection.....i started collecting as it was what i was into back in the day hitting the streets with my box not tube!

as for best sounding boxes....yes of course my m90 does take some beating as it doe's have speaker upgrades.....but i have to say my highly moded with gf767 sounds amazing,i use it most of the time over my hifi and it's sat right next to it!

docs - 2012-09-10 03:46

We have to remember with all vintage electronics that one will always have a different sound to another of the exact same model. This depends on its life, where it has been stood, whether there are issues electronically or physically. Bare in mind that assumptions are made that all are in top notch condition and therefore statements that the sound is crap/great are difficult to take as accurate.

I would have thought that none of us has heard every box out there so again it is difficult to say. For me, hands down without question is the M90 closely followed by the S90. Both of my models of these are in mint condition both internally and externally so I can at least rest assured that they sound how they were intended. The kaboom sounds good but its just not my era so I couldn't ever bring myself to getting one.

redbenjoe - 2012-09-10 08:52

Rotel # 10 is spectacular

bison - 2012-09-10 09:05

^^ i agree with with you lee about the kaboom, they arent why i got into collecting stereos..a different era,

to me they look like something dynorod would turn up with to unblock your drains

maxx134 - 2012-09-10 09:10

I would have to say the M90 is tops as well..
When I had mine hooked up to my stereo it was mind boggling fantastic clarity and I was in ae
that they were paper tweeters as the highs were so real.
Yes I had good stereo system before as well, magnum Dynalab tuner, Linn systemdemdek phonk,
B&k preamp & amp plus a nice Carver m500t amp & $2k Energy speakers from Canada
but most consumer grade Hi-Fi will shurely plummet like a rock.
I realized later innlife that Boomboxes are the best thing I like for me,
and not a stereo system person so I sold all my gear and have one expensive headphones that do the same job

mellymelsr - 2012-09-10 09:12

If we are talking about any boombox on batteries the RX A5 destroys them all. The sound quality, bass and volume just can't be matched. Carry around boomboxes the M90 wins that one. The Panasonic 5350 is a very close second...by the way the Hulk would destroy the Thing. Hulks power is limitless because it is based on how angry he gets...no contest.
