Hi There

backintheday - 2012-09-29 21:24

I'm a newbie who joined a few weeks ago, after deciding to start a bit of a collection of 80's boomboxes, and thought it was about time to say hello.  I like a variety of models and makes, but have always had a soft spot for Sharps (especially the GF and QT series).  Cheers to you all!

welcome among collectors of boxed untouched/untouchable units, insider traders of the same item, compulsive buyers-and-sellers, experts, fake experts, tinkerers, logorrheics, grail searchers... i wonder who's so crazy as to call it a madhouse

Hello, and welcome to the forum Backintheday.

Thanks for the welcomes.  I don't have much of a collection yet, but will take some photos.  I think I must have misinterpreted the profile questions - the 9191 is my favourite stereo, but I don't have own one at this stage.  I used to have a variety of Sharps in the 80's but nothing that big.  My favourite stereo I actually own is a recent acquisition - An Akai AJ-530.  My collection (so far) is shown below:

It sounds surprisingly good.  It has quite a 'warm' and quite 'open' sound on tape and has plenty of power.   On radio it can really blast.  The maximum I have turned it up to is 4 out of 10 on radio and it is very loud, without distortion.  I am reluctant to make it work any harder, as the speakers are not in mint condition and I don't want to risk tearing them.  It does lack deep bass though.  The bass and treble adjusters seem to be relatively fine and, in the case of the bass one in particular, don't make a lot of difference.

Nice...also like the sort of upside down feel of it!

Yes, it is a bit strange.  Beautifully ugly in an 80's ostentatious sort of way!
