There is nothing wrong with collecting both!    Basically anything audio lol.    I have Jukeboxes, Boomboxes and hifi.   One thing I did have to stop doing when my girlfriend moved in with kids was stop collecting speakers since it was just too much room.  At one point, I had 185 lb polk sda 1.2, 155 lb. polk 2.3, 6 foot carver amazing, Vandersteen 3a, polk 10B, JM Labs 815, Norman, Tyler acoustics reference monitor, Polk rti12, and JBL L150 all at the same time!!!!   Talk about taking up some room.     I did sell of some boxes I didnt care for but the rest ( 40? or so ) are in my bedroom on plastic shelves.    Even though they don't get played as often as they should be, i still enjoy looking at them. I still look for them when i am at sales or places to buy.

radio.raheem - 2012-11-19 03:55

Ey up Ej.....that's one hell of a stash you had my friend......sadly i don't have room for both lad but i am keeping a few radios....not many..much prefure good hifi always did...just had a cracking bargin on an a technics amp touch wood. it normally sells for 2,3k second hand, been looking for years had it much cheaper than that....let's hope all goes well my friend

What model technics amp? Their only a couple good ones I seen, good example is a Technics SU-V900 I have. Dual mono block construction and 4x 12500uf caps and discrete transistors instead of STK IC. But becarefull what you buy as most use the cheaper STK's IC, their ok, but not that great. Seen them also fail due to heat as heatsink is small and relys on rear fan that fails overtimes due to bearings get dry or worn in motor. Had a couple were the resistor in fan circuit burn up. The Technics with SVI IC are better, delivers more power at lower rail voltage and don't see these fail offen.

deliverance - 2012-11-19 05:53

the su-v900 is a cracking amp ,  heavy and packs a punch

northerner - 2012-11-19 06:26

I had a Technics SU-V something amp in probably the mid 80's. Can't for the life of me remember which one it was, just that it was damned loud!  Cost me a couple of hundred quid at the time and had the big volume dial in the middle. Probably not anything near the model you're talking about but I loved it at the time...think I sold it at a car boot for a fiver not knowing there was any market for old hifi....d'oh!

Bought all Technics separates for a couple of hundred quid a piece, which was a lot of money when I was 16, and had what I reckoned was a damned impressive hifi

nickfish - 2012-11-19 07:33

Hi Northerner,

Your amp was probably the SU-V40 because it was all the rage back then and very poular with What HiFI? who were very loathe to recommend anything Jap at the time!

I had an SU-V900 as well! It was my last Stereo amp before going multi channel with a Denon. It was very good and lots more powerful than the in-vogue British amps of the day. Sold it to one of my mates who also had my Marantz KI-Signature CD. Still has them now.

Nope, not that one. Mine was taller than that and definitely had the volume dial nearer the middle.  I would likely have checked reviews in What Hifi tho as I usually do my research before buying such stuff.  Just had a bit of a google and I'm 99% sure it was the SU-V460

same models

nickfish - 2012-11-19 08:35

I have a brochure at home with those amps in. From memory; that was an awful lot of money for a lot of gimmicks like 'virtual battery operation' that sounded pretty impressive but did not a truly HiFi sound make. There are some much better pre-power combinations available for a lot less money. I doubt they sold many of them!

At the end of the day what is the point of all that technical hoohaa if it does not sound as good as something simpler?

There were quite a few in the range....depends wich one you heard and what it was rigged to.....im sure they sound way better than any £3000 m90 and i diddn't pay quater that so im sure i'll be happy provided it dosen't get trashed in the flippin post

Not to familiar with the SE-A1010 , but look like it uses a SVI IC, from internal pictures, not bad has it can handle higher current no problem, but nothing special. Not worth £3000, just VU'S look good, but pretty much same amp design as my SU-G90 . But Technics SU-V900 still much better, was one of Technics best effort, beside the SE-A3 MK2, which was their best effort. Their other good amp was a Technics SU-V8

Never go by price on eBay, sellers like to overprice anything that look cool especially when it has nice VU displays. You can do much better at that price range, or even way cheaper.

Their best effort I believe was a Technics-SE-A3 mk2 Does 200w a channel and has that nice VU displays.

I think 90% of boombox's are highly over-rated and over priced! Personally i love boombox's but i don't see the point of anyone owning more than 10 of their favorites. Some people have 100+ and that always made me wonder...WTF would anyone want that many for anyway. Storage is a big problem plus like any vintage electronics, you don't use em...you lose em!

Even though you spend hundreds of more $$$ restoring them on top of the price you paid for them..they sit mostly on shelves not being used.

boomer70 - 2012-11-20 04:36

Even if you succeed in removing all of the static in the switches and clean the caps ect... the static comes back from being stored and not being used on a regular basis even in a climate controlled room and not many people can afford a climate controlled storage area or room.

What is the point of owning 50 100 200 old radios that you rarely use...?? They are nice to look at but honestly...how many collectors use them on a regular basis...?

northerner - 2012-11-20 04:44

I use all of mine but then I've only got a dozen or so and intend to stick to that sort of level for that reason...plus the threatened divorce

I agree with you in principal, but the same could be said for any collectible (ie, cars, stamps, artwork even comics) all cannot be used at once, and even displaying them will lessen there value (stamps, comics get sun bleached) so I guess it's to each his own.

I personally would like to have more than 10 boxes but sadly I don't have the space as you mentioned...but if I did

speak for yourself lad......i use all of mine, i rotate them, you cant have a collection without collecting!!!......and nearly every box is different in sound and looks, some are better to just use and others are just better to look at or you have boxes with both qualities!

i walk into my boombox room and think wow,it always make me smile

bison - 2012-11-20 07:53

space is my main concern with collecting, hopefully soon i will have my own space to work on them and display them,i like the way your collection is set up lee looks like you have a dedicated boombox room.

northerner - 2012-11-20 07:55

I agree with that one a million percent! I pop in the room where I have mine just to look at them and smile...and my collection isn't a patch on yours Lee!

could'nt of put that better myself mate, i only have a few but i could easily accomodate a few more

if i had the space and cash then i would easily go for 20/30 +, it's all part of the love i have for boxes

Cheerz morice you're a gent as usual.......it's obvious now that this the 10 10 is not the best amp by technics but im still happy if she arrives in one peice as this was a holy grail amp of mine ...it cost £3000 new here, mine has cost £500 i just hope it arrives in one peice.....im starting to have my doubts wether she will arive period.....alough to be fair i havn't paid yet

i agree with boomer 70 having had all the boomboxes most don't sound that good and for me there is no more need than 10......but i wouldn't have said that 10 yrs ago hehe

had them all and to me although not traditional the jvc dp200 sounds the best better than all the other kabooms...with it's indipendant bass and treble controls....

panasonicfan realy good to see you back here all we need now is jens....one last word....what was that arsholes name gh or something like that....no it wasn't me bill but that plonker seems to have vanished now so, all's good
