myself i'm very bad at quizzes, that's why i'd rather ask than solve one but you always try, so you deserve a prize. here's the (non)answer to the (non)quiz for you:

i hope your not saying that's the box Samovar, the woofer clearly looks like a d8614's in the pic, but the led's are different??

of course not, i've only published the answer to the quiz i set for you with my first pic -the one with the bue woofer. sorry for the confusion, it's my fault. to recap: today there are two quizzes: one for you (not a real quiz, rather a tribute to your favorite box) and one for everybody else - including you all the clues other than the pics with the blue woofer refer to the latter.

Here let me be cryptic with my answer as this is a easy one ( rg 20 ) - been working with this very model recently

lav.loo - 2012-11-25 09:15

i should of known, the led's are a big give away and rg20=rising 20/20.

silly me, i still enjoyed the quiz, thanks for taking time to do it Samovar.

look forward to next weeks

deech - 2012-11-25 09:24

I missed the quiz !!!

One of my favourites there sal the 20/20 an d ofcourse The philips!

I must check my documents from 1982 or 1983 for a full review on the 8614

in Greek !

samovar - 2012-11-25 09:42

actually today's quiz was also a tribute to deech, who found an excellent specimen of the 20/20 some weeks ago. the pic shows the one that i finally got from a friend of mine. it is in excellent conditions, except for the keys (which are easily rectified) and the missing aerials (which are about to be replaced). it is a wonderful box, huge and yet graced with levity. its sound is powerful and sweet at the same time, i love it. yet i could bring myself to part with this beauty if - and that's a big if - a member here accepts to swap it for... well, that's a secret  but if you want an instant additional quiz, then you'll have to think of a VERY important box

deech - 2012-11-25 09:55

Thank you for your nice words sal !

The Rising SRC 2005 is a very nice box.

I m missing all the keys though and the cover cassette

door not the mechanism.

hmmmm i wonder what the box is that you'de swap your rising for Samovar

well best of luck mate

samovar - 2012-12-02 06:13

hi guys and gurls!

today's quiz is slightly experimental, being the result of no time for new pics and the idea of a different format. it only asks you to identify 5 boxes from 5 different sets of VU meters

a word of advice: since the same VU may identify more than one box, in a way the quiz is open. i'll consider it solved if you produce a consistent list of boxes: even if some -- or even if all of them -- are different from the ones where my pics come from. of course, you must give evidence that your boxes have the same VU on display here

winner of winners will be the one who finds more boxes for the each VU before 24:00 greenwich time

last but not least: i took the liberty to publish pics of boxes that do not belong to my collection. thanks to those who know, either non-stereo2goers or s2go members who are not taking part to the contest

VU n. 1 (easy peasy)

VU_1

VU n. 2 (ditto --more or less)

VU_2

VU n. 3 (for absolute beginners)

VU_3

VU n. 4 (elementary)

VU_4

VU n. 5 (piece of cake)

VU_5

blaster - 2012-12-02 06:39

VU # 1 is the SHARP GF-999

lav.loo - 2012-12-02 06:42

good afternoon Samovar

the first is defo a 777, and the rest i have'nt got a clue lol

deech - 2012-12-02 06:44

With a first look i can recognize only the 1st pic!

No 1.Sharp GF-777 and maybe No 4. is Aiwa cs 880

Its quite difficult to identify all of them.

Will have to try!

Give us some more hints for us apprentices Sam!

What will be the price for the winner?????

Give us some motives Sam!

deliverance - 2012-12-02 06:50

number 5 crown 850/980 .

deliverance - 2012-12-02 06:51

er... well... i hadn't considered prizes otherwise i would have prepared a really tough quiz but since you are looking for motivation, this time i'll send the winner a hi resolution picture of the 5 boxes

ps. no additional hints, sorry. as i had no time to shoot pics, actually i recycled some old ones

traveler - 2012-12-06 03:49

@ sanovar - Has anybody gotten these 'VU Meter's' correctly identified yet?

lav.loo - 2012-12-06 05:28

yes come on Samovar this has got to be a record waiting time

samovar - 2012-12-06 06:50

yep you're right Lav. 1, 4 and 5 have been correctly identified respectively by Blaster, deech, and deliverance. very well done!

yet i'm surprised that nobody got the BIG clue i gave to you when i said that, having no time to prepare the quiz, i recycled a few old pics.

hence: n. 3 is from the maxell rr7000/Contec 3883 box that is in the prototype post of the Sunday Quiz post. n. 2 belongs to the Vinix that appears in the "show your chrome" post.

a little search within the site was all you needed

lav.loo - 2012-12-06 11:29

looks like i failed miserably once again lol, thanks for clarifying Samovar

samovar - 2012-12-09 02:01

Originally Posted by Lav Loo:

actually you didn't fail at all, since you suggested that the VUs in picture n.1 come from a sharp gf 777. and that is correct! as i said, i accepted also alternate boxes, as sometimes you find the same VUs in different units. for instance, the VUs of pic n. 1 are also those of the Aiwa CS-660 --and God knows of how many other boxes!

the problem is that Blaster was quicker than you in suggesting the gf-999, which by the way is also EXACTLY the one box from which i took the pic  anyhow, are you ready for today's challenge? i can anticipate that, although not really tough, it is not too easy either

lav.loo - 2012-12-09 03:34

come on lets get the party started

samovar - 2012-12-09 03:46

sure! so, te be consistent with last week's post, clue n.1 is guess what?

hint_1

retro - 2012-12-09 04:03

deech - 2012-12-09 04:21

hitachi trk 8800rm?

deech - 2012-12-09 05:23

Universum Supersound 16000

http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/clip/280936254684377993

samovar - 2012-12-09 05:30

admittedly, today's quiz is slightly tricky. i understand why you think it's a hitachi, but alas it is not! the box is something of a chameleon: neither a mainstream nor an aka --as far as i know, but i am 99,9% sure about it--, it was discussed this summer on this site. here's another BIG, almost decisive clue:

hint_5

samovar - 2012-12-09 05:33

yep, deech got it RIGHT! congratulations!

Universum_Supersound_16000

Universum Supersound 16000. congratulations also to retro, it was not an obvious choice but you got it right quickly

deech - 2012-12-09 05:37

A very nice Unit i like the twin VUs .

Universum was a japanese or a German brand??

samovar - 2012-12-09 05:41

german. the name of this box is well deserved, as it sounds loud and clear, with fantastic bass, among the best i've ever heard in a box this size. Universum was a department of Quelle radio manufacturer, a quality one that, unfortunately, has disappeared into void.

lav.loo - 2012-12-09 05:49

i would never of got it, congrats Deech well done beautiful box by the way, love the look

so.....i fail again

samovar - 2012-12-09 06:10

this box looks like a distant relative of the hitachi trk 8130. so, Lav, you were not wrong in suspecting that it was of the hitachi tribe! i guess it is not particularly popular because of its minimalism --not many extras, actually. also, its brand is better know in continental europe than elsewhere. but i like its slightly unusual design, and as i said i'm quite happy with its super-sound
