Definitely got a touch of the Blackpool Pier about it.

It looks a very low quality box indeed, in fact far too low for your standards Sal. So, I think it has a special feature that attracted you, something unusual. Lots of LEDs? A disco ball? Something 'extra' ???
mitchelljames - 2015-10-11 10:16
Is it a Crown sz5100?

It's indeed a very cheap box whose only merit is to be perfect for the Sunday Quiz --nobody seems to know it!
How I got it and why is a long story that I am going to make public soon. In anticipation of the details, suffice it to say that it is part of a project which, in order to succeed, will need a little help from fellow s2goers. More about this next week. Meanwhile I'll give away all the clues left, in the hope that somebody unravels the mystery:
samovar - 2015-10-11 10:36
Is it a Crown sz5100?
No Crown, although this Circus prop is partly Lasonic-/Crown-/Unisef- inspired
samovar - 2015-10-11 13:32
I didn't anticipate that the quiz would turn out so fiendish. Unfortunately I must go. Before I sign out, however, I offer two extra clues:
Bonus info: the box, whose American brand is not very famous but definitely not unknown, is labeled "Super Jumbo". It is in fact slightly smaller than, say, the Unisef SZ-5000. "Jumbo" would probably be more appropriate.
It exhibits a 3-way speaker system and a uniquely-looking 5-band graphic equalizer, but lacks phono/line in. It shouldn't be an aka, but who knows.
The model is missing from the Wiki Boombox site, yet one pic appears in a s2go post of a couple of years ago.
Good luck!

Nope...

Realy tough one Sal.
We need more details as this evolved
into Monday quiz really quick and if you dont help us
it will be Tuesdays quiz too ,
that must be a rare one.
metad - 2015-10-12 06:53
No, we don't need more details. They won't help. It's more than enough details to ID - only if you know this radio. But if you don't know, why to guess
The guessing is not identification.
Simply we (who saw this thread) dont know

The general opinion on Electro Brand is less than flattering, and I have no serious reason to disagree. Yet, this box sounds better than one would expect. More about this next Sunday.

(This is American? = ELECTRO BRAND 7993) ! ?
( American experts ) dont Search for America Boombox's because there are not ANY! as read in another thread down below*
*Mystery Lightning Box*

*Not, it is a less known brand. But it's American, so I thought that American experts would have recognized the box pretty soon. When I realized that it was not the case, I planned to show it next Sunday.*
What ( American experts ) ? Me? I don't Yearn or search for this brand ever as its Gaudy and cheep looking like something found at a flea-market but never in a brick & mortar store.

Haha, James
isolator42 - 2015-10-15 06:17
I wondered whether it would be an aka for the graphic-tastic KTO JC-129. I was wrong, but nice to see it's from the same design ethos...
I love the way it proudly states "5 band graphic eq" above the 10 sliders...
samovar - 2015-10-15 06:48

The box is Made in Taiwan, but the brand is American:

I couldn't agree more. But I didn't search for this brand, I stumbled across it (and the box was perfect for the quiz)

samovar - 2015-10-18 01:11
Thanks Mystic Traveller for confirming that Electro Brand didn't produce top-notch units Here's another example, courtesy from el_xicano:
http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...ic-oldies-8track-box
The last mysterious box of the Sunday Quiz is no exception: cheap plastic and poor build quality, as it is apparent from the pics of the cassette player keys.
Poor build quality affects also the graphic equalizer, which is almost unique: it's 5-band, but it has 10 sliders. Trompe-l'oeil, optical illusion, fake detail: the sliders work in pair, but this is acceptable. The fact is that every other plastic strip separating them is so tiny and soft that bends under the pressure of your fingers. You have to adjust the equalizer carefully, or it breaks!
This said, I agree with WheelyPanamax that this is a fun box: (http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic/mystery-lightning-box). It's theatrical, and it sounds surprisingly decent --and very loud! I laughed like crazy when I found L Lopez's story in an old thread while I was searching for "Electro Brand" on the site: http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...7#193392314111972767
I wonder how is that possible -- ie, that it sounds decent. Maybe my unit is better preserved than more prized ones? Or is it true that, eventually, all boomboxes are "the lowest quality, plastic rubbish-material made telephone-sound-generators, battery-eaters, flimsy and unfixable noise makers on earth", as autoreverser has it (http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...7#457856795992151577)?
Whatever: I used it in the quiz because I thought it is a less seen around model, although I didn't imagine it was almost unknown! I thought it was pretty common in the States. I listened to it for about one month while I stayed in Buffalo in the 90s. It was the property of the mason who was restoring my friend's house (cheap box, cheap mason, I can assure you! LOL!). I had a great time back in the day, so the main if not the only reason for it being in my collection is basically nostalgia
Today's quiz will be much easier. It will start at about 2:00 GMT, so be ready...
samovar - 2015-10-18 06:12
You ready? Here we go -- but first a few words of introduction.
Since (amazingly!) nobody gave the right answer to my last two quizzes, today the question is easy, I daresay basic. I promise no details, no Photoshopped pics, no possessed camera whatsoever. Today I am in for the real thing, so the question revolves around the one and only picture of a guy carrying a box on his shoulder. Which one?
You have no excuse not to solve this. The pic is taken from the net and you may have already seen it and found the answer before I even asked the question. Solve it and write the solution down cause I don't have the box and don't know the answer myself. Go ahead, make my day -- you're even allowed to use Jens' last BBDB!
mitchelljames - 2015-10-18 06:14
I think its a Silver, but I don't know the model
samovar - 2015-10-18 06:17
I think its a Silver, but I don't know the model
As I said I can neither confirm nor deny. All I know is that the box has a lovely look and shape and size, and I wish I had one!
samovar - 2015-10-18 10:42
No answer yet? I guess next time I'll have to use the M70 or 90...
Let's recap: I really don't know neither brand nor model of the one featured in the pic.
Mitchell James suggests it's a Silver, a brand that I don't know well, so not the one I would think of in the first place.
When I found the pic online, I thought instead that the woofer cabinet of the mystery box looks like the one of the lovely Sanyo M9838
I don't know all Sanyos, but my guess is that the box is not a Sanyo. Especially if you think that at least another unit presents almost the same feature. To wit, the interesting Emerson CTR 949 (pic found online):
Here's my shot in the dark (instead of a clue): given that other details of the Emerson look remarkably similar to those of our mystery box, is it possible that it belongs to the Emerson tribe?
deech - 2015-10-19 04:00
Sal it looks fatty but i ve never seen this one before,
i mean the one this guy is holding ofcourse !
samovar - 2015-10-19 05:07
i ve never seen this one before
Now that's serious cause if a box doesn't show up in Athens it may as well be extinct. So unless somebody else finds it out...
metad - 2015-10-19 10:24
No offence, but It's almost like to come to classic cars collectors forum, Ferrari, Bugatti etc, and ask them to provide info on Tata cars, or identify the details of, say, one of the Geely models.

For the moment, let's forget about the last (unsolved) puzzle & move on.
The point of this thread is that each mystery must be solvable and so it should feature well-known boxes. Let alone that so far only autoreverser has managed to post a quiz and see it solved even if he himself didn't know the answer (see his Spec This Box thread).
Today's box is famous so the first installment can't show too much. Pics one and two didn't turn out well (damn camera!) but maybe not too bad either, if you look close enough. Anyway the third one shows valuable details without distortion. Here we go:
metad - 2015-10-25 10:17

LOL! You see? With a famous box not even distortion prevents instant recognition:

Hail to metad for his X-Ray vision and impeccable timing
metad - 2015-10-25 10:29
It's easy, because not too many boxes with asymmetrical location of the tape and rectangular tweeters grilles, the same time.
To be honest I don't think the quiz is good only for a well known boxes
samovar - 2015-10-25 10:35
It's easy, because not too many boxes with asymmetrical location of the tape and rectangular tweeters grilles, the same time.
Easy for real experts, of course. I for sure do not have that expertise.
Anyway, I'm happy that this time the quiz was solved, although of course I was hoping to make it last a bit longer. Next Sunday I'll try to make it solvable and challenging at the same time.
metad - 2015-10-25 10:40
I think not every quiz has to be solved at all. Just do not expect it.
The point is to have fun
samovar - 2015-11-08 03:42
The philosophy of future quizzes is to post either less known boxes of famous brands or (relatively) known boxes of less famous brands Here we go with today's challenge:
Non-European box for the French market. Two (partial) side visions -- updates in about two hours from now:

Might be a SONY CFS .. the question is the model number.
Sony used those battery covers and the
arrows to point where the screws were.

spot on metad! But I think in this case a noble mention goes to deech, who actually found out the brand and the series exploiting the most hidden and indirect clues. well done Dimitris you too!

Today's quiz is my homage to deech's incredible fleamarket found. I guess that for his wonderful Sanyo MR-V9 he deserves a nomination for the Sherlock Holmes Miniboombox Prize 2015 -- the only possible rival I can think of, so far, is cleaninglady's almost as elusive Marantz PMS-5. Hence the first two hints of today's box (the astute reader will notice that, in fact, I'm offering three hints)
samovar - 2015-11-15 08:27
I've never been good in maths, I may well have offered four hints with my last. Let's beat the budget:
