samovar - 2015-11-15 10:15

If it's so easy, what are you waiting for, you Sherlocks? It's not a Watson, it's a Sanyo  (hint #1); it's a mini (#2) like the MR-V9 and the Marants PMS-5, it's not everyday sight (#3) it comes also in red (#4), it has 3-band radio (#5) timer stand-by & soft touch (#6) and after hint #7

metad - 2015-11-15 10:18

I just sent you a PM with the answer a few minutes ago
because didn't want to spoil the game.

deech - 2015-11-15 10:56

I just saw 1337 pictures of sanyos on shizaudio

many of them mine or sals !

I ll take it but please no bullying eh?

Bullying is a bad thing to do !!

Sanyo MRFF7 but the picture with the counter is misleading.

The MRFF7 is the Japanese version but there might be a similar

Universal one.

Grrr got not time for the quiz today but i m addicted !

Well er... I've never seen a MRFF7. It might be the Japanese version of today's mysterious fellow, but I don't know unless you provide a pic --I just can't find one on the site you mention...

deech - 2015-11-15 11:08

ah  now you see how its like to check among 1337 pictures !!

Well i m not a cyber bully so here it is the link :

You got very close but unfortunately it's not the one! Btw no bullying was ever intended, maybe just a little teasing... after all today's post is in homage to your extraordinary finding of today

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Sal i think now you are teased with the above picture !! lol

samovar - 2015-11-15 11:29

I think I can publish the pics of the mysterious box, since (a) metad found the correct solution one hour ago and communicated it to me via pm (b) Dimitris went through the ordeal of the Russian site and got as close as possible (c) James has only 3 double-deck mini Sanyo but even if he had this model chances are that he might overlook it -- like he did with the Sony last week (counter-teasing I know)

The mystery box is the gorgeous...

SANYO M-W24K

It is a very sophisticated mini with detachable speakers, a set of additional woofers on top, and an incredible top full of shiny buttons sliders knobs. Great looks great sound  Here a close-up of the top. I just love the minuscule graphic equalizer: cozy and effective at the same time!

Hi all, thanks for highlighting the lineage of last week's mysterious box!  Good to see that oldtimers like JVC are online, too bad that so many are still having coffee after a belated Sunday lunch...

Hope you're all ready as today's quiz is different in that it's not going to show images but only TEXTS.

Yes: you're going to read words rather than look at a pictures. But isn't writing a visual art of sorts? And don't we all read, literally, the surface of our boxes whenever we look for the right command? Just think of the sense of helplessness each time we try to operate a Japan-only box, with all those beautiful and yet incomprehensible Kangys instead of the more familiar latin alphabet...

Here we go! Hawk-eyed competitors will be rewarded as the apparently pointless clues in fact give away a good amount of information

Q_1

Q_2

samovar - 2015-11-22 06:15

Ok Ok you need more.

The following words respect the order and the position (not necessarily the spacing) in which they appear in the original box. As opposed to the previous post, where position was actually reversed:

Q_9      Q_9bis

Q_7       Q_8

samovar - 2015-11-22 06:32

to solve this quiz you need to master visualization and spatial thought. I know you're familiar with this box. Only, you are looking at it in a very unfamiliar way (uncanny, maybe):

                             Q_4

Q_12                                             Q_bis

samovar - 2015-11-22 07:25

How strange words are whenever they do not belong in a narrative but in the description of a function. More spatial clues:

Yo ) Samovar, these hints useful only for those who knows this box in person, but there is nothing helpful for a logical thinking

Putting all clues together. I've never been good with collage, but this should give you a spatial idea of the box

Using only words makes identification difficult, but the box is well-known. An indication:

Well done, even more so because the solution comes from a Walkman guru. Or does it? In fact, about one hour ago I got a pm from metad who gave me the right solution...

Whatever: I'll consider both winners, as I give it for granted that metad is always the first to solve the sunday quiz

jt.techno - 2015-11-22 10:03

I pm'd you on this one two weeks ago ... guess you missed it ... lol ... good quiz ... keep it up :-)

samovar - 2015-11-22 10:10

LOL JT two weeks ago I didn't have this box!  It's a super-recent fleamarket find!

With this post I was trying to outsmart my great friend Dimitris who takes a stroll downtown Athens each time he feels like getting himself a grail! Sometimes also my walks downtown have interesting side-effects -- even if I don't live in Athens

But the quiz was at the same time my homage to Dimitris' incredible collection -- too bad he left when I started the quiz

ao - 2015-11-22 10:28

You cannot steal my glory.  I demand to see the PM from metad complete with exact time.

I won this fair and square !!!!!

You did indeed, but there's no shame in sharing the win with metad: "d" meta-winner of all quizzes, so to speak.

Let's put things this way: you won an always-already won quiz, is that fair?

deech - 2015-11-23 08:44

I can see some competition here !!

In a good way ofcourse !

Thats a really great  topic.

Sal can you tell us who are the winners and

what were the boxes as of today ?

I mean like :

1.sanyo example - Winner EXAMPLE

2. ...       ...

I love some statistics !

samovar - 2015-11-29 08:17

hi folks,

today's quiz is experimental, but hopefully easier than usual. You'll be asked to find out which boombox is portrayed in each of the 5 pics that I'm going to show to you. Note, however, that I'll show only a detail of the original pic without the box

All images are available online, some of them must be familiar to you, and even if you've never seen them before you can easily find them via google search. How? Well, by typing what you think are the appropriate search keys.

I'll move to the next picture only after the box portrayed in the previous one has been correctly identified. In case a box has more alias I'll consider the question answered when the first plausible model/aka is indicated.

In order to determine the winner, eventually I'll have to produce a sort of statistic. hence, also deech's last week request will be answered.

Does it sound complicated? It is not. Here's the first pic:
