Great job! I saw this post on BBXRY...I like the fact you can plug an electric guitar into it and use it as an amp (my brother brings his acoustic when camping..this would add a whole new dimension)
Does the chassis come in other colours?

well i have owned this bad boy for almost a week.. and folks.. i think we have a new king of the bass boomer here.. yep this kick ass Sharp has in my honest opinion been officially crowned Best Bass Boomer.. niether JVC or TDK can produce the bass this monster can.. and having been owner of both the JVC and TDK.. you can take my opinion to the bank.. and to top it off.. the Sharp is cheaper than both the JVC and TDK (TDK when it was first released you can get the TDK for the same amount now..) but i would grab the Sharp before i would grab the TDK.. man you should have heard this thing when i brought it to work.. holy sh*t did it pump out the bass.. bass you can feel 10 feet away.. all my co-workers were in awe from the amount of bass coming from the beast.. and i had it set on Vocal preset! with the xtra bass setting.. wow.. all i can say is.. wow.. so there's my feelings on the Sharp.. if you love bass and bass you can feel.. (vocals were fantastic too btw) then grab one NOW!

man these are sold out everywhere.. was gonna grab a second one so i have a spare if anything happens to the first one.. but nobody in the states has any left! so my itchy boombox buying fingers bought a Pioneer Steez Crew instead.. should get that this week.. expect an actual review to follow.. oh btw.. the design of the Sharp is that way for a reason.. with all the air being moved inside the case.. it needed that odd design to allow the bass to thump.. and thump it does! anyone else grab one of these and care to chime in?
blaster - 2013-03-04 20:30
Would be nice to see a sound off between the two...keep us posted
radio.raheem - 2013-03-04 21:39
just be warned....as far as i know the pioneer doesn't have radio built in
isolator42 - 2013-03-04 23:54
I think you're right Reno, the Pioneer Steez has no tuner.
mmm... want one - the Sharp, that is.
Always good to see new, BIG boomers on the market, esp. from a decent manufacturer. Of course the shape isn't to everyone's taste, but like the Kaboom, form is following function.
The Sharp does have an RDS tuner, but no DAB, unfortunately.
OK, we all know the bass is outstanding, but the key for many is what's the treble like? This was a significant problem with the Kaboom on all but the drum-pad version.
There's some on Amazon UK shipped for less than £150 - seems a decent deal:

Anyway, if you haven't already seen, here's the spec:

Good morning paul lad. yea i want one of those new sharp.....they were £100 but those have all gone....and i chose to buy an m90 instead....btw it's about 11 or 12 i have been through now....but they have all gone to members on here....just wish i could fix the deck on this one....flippin play won't engage...it just clunks
themightyrepairer - 2013-03-05 00:21
cool thing about the Pioneer is it has both mids and tweeters.. i made a review on the JVC RV-NB50 when it arrived a few years ago.. was very pissed that JVC went the China way.. pathetic parts inside.. meager power supply.. just all around sad.. on the other hand i cracked open the Sharp.. very impressed.. subwoofers listed at 33 watts @ 6 ohms.. mids rated at 33 watts at 3 ohms.. the power supply board was very well made.. also it was manufactured in malaysia.. same as the old model Kabooms.. thumbs up to Sharp for not going the cheap China way.. also while inside the cabinet i noticed the orange parts on the unit are screwed/snapped in.. telling me they can come off and be pianted or exchanged very easily if Sharp comes out with any other colors.. (god i hope they do) i took some pics of the internals while i was poking around inside i'll post them later..
themightyrepairer - 2013-03-05 00:28
looks like more etailers are listing them for sale like B&H Photo.. but none in stock yet.. it's a great sign! really suprised Amazon doesnt have them listed.. they are usually the first to have these for sale in the states..

Interesting about the later Kabooms.
I've not heard one, but consensus is they're good, but not as good as the older ones for sound, which is a shame, if not a surprise.
Good news about the Sharp internals too

Hey Shawn,
Thanks to you, I purchased one of these bad boys! I'm glad that you did a tear-down of the box, it's good to know that there's a sparky on here (and I mean, the Internet as a whole - no offence to any other tech-heads, I'm sure a lot of you are on here too!) that knows his components. It always makes a big difference knowing that the equipment you buy:
1) Looks good on the outside.
2) Is equally good on the inside!
I hear the Kabooms have fallen under-par with their components lately..
Oh, and my Sharp is being delivered tomorrow, so I'm pretty-damn stoked. This is my first boombox in a long, long time! It's the one thing that has been missing during most of my Summers, over the years. We usually use smaller docks, or small speakers . Their portability is great, but when you've got a group of, say, a dozen guys camping during the summer, it's not so great to get everyone dancing round the fire like madmen with a small speaker. The noise of the fire, beer-guzzling and banter usually overwhelms the littler buggers.
I had a look around the Interwebs, high and low, for boomboxes... One that really caught my eye was the TDK 3 Speaker boombox, and when I was looking at it on Amazon and after several reviews, they noted there were a lot of issues with random distortion (even in one video review, the bass was crunching and it just sounded painful!) And at its price, £270. I really didn't think it was worth it. At that price, I'd expect perfection... Also, I'd never want to take it outside! (I've gotten to it below)
Although, they are selling them (and the TDK Cube) in HMV stores, in the UK, for ~£100! I would of picked one (of each TDK) up at that price and the Sharp GX-M10!
The other thing that put me off about the TDK boxes were the lack of grilles. I know for a fact that if I took that thing to a festival or out somewhere for a drink, that some utter arse-hole would pan in the cones, leaving me with an utterly useless, yet completely aesthetically pleasing, black box.
As said above, I also had a look at the classic 'Kaboom's, although, the new 'Made in China' boxes didn't appeal, as almost everything made in China that is meant to be higher-end equipment is usually just rubbish, at the end of the day - Plus, they were woefully expensive for what they were!
From my point of view - The Sharp looks like it might be the best modern BOOMING boombox on the market at the minute!
Is the bass really that intense? In your post above you said that people were in awe at the amount of bass coming out of it.
Considering this thing is going to be used, mainly, as a pure party/workout device, the more bass the merrier!
EDIT:
I thought I should also mention that I got mine directly from Sharp for £150, with free shipping via DPD. I'm fairly impressed that the price is so low directly from the horses mouth.
I'm also impressed with their delivery service. I put the order in on Sunday, it was a public holiday yesterday (06/05) and it's arriving tomorrow! So, realistically, that's been 1 working day and it's being delivered the next working day.
Good job Sharp!

Playing music in a video is One thing, then being heard through what-ever you have connected to the 'net' for speaker's is the limitation's of being able to HEAR he difference between this versus that?
I am still waiting for somebody to review these with a (( Sound Level pressure meter )) that you can witness to decibels output of the difference between these High Output Bass boombox's in a digital number format so that 'we' can see ( Closer to exactly ) just how much sound these bass- monster's Really put out !!!

Yes the video is nice & the review is ok but there is no winner that can play a cassette Except for the JVC RV-NB1 and any other input you can add to it via it's 1/4 inch input or the 3.5mm 1/8 inch stereo input it has, versus the 'other' 2 model's

nothin for nothin.. but like you Jamie I haven't used cassettes in like 15 years.. if you still love using cassettes that's fine.. but I love technology.. and having thousands of songs on a flash drive no bigger than my thumbnail.. hell that's freaking sweet.. I also use internet radio via IPOD.. what more can you ask for.. and of course your not going to actually hear the boomboxes in the video unless your right there.. but I figured using my new HD camcorder with stereo mics might help a little bit.. or you can just take my word like Jamie has and realize i'm praising the Sharp for a good reason.. I love bass.. good bass.. and I have owned at least 12 JVC Kabooms.. all models including the DP100.. and many many other boomboxes.. at least 200+ over the years.. so if I say the Sharp has excellent bass.. you can bet on it.. the only thing that I don't understand is no one else has yet to either buy one or chime in on owning one and what they think of the bass.. I know Jamie's grabbing one so finally we will get another opinion..

Hey,
I've not had a lot of time to play with it yet, it arrived yesterday evening! I was hoping it would of came in the morning, meaning I could really crank it and not annoy a lot of the neighbours I got it up to 20, and it was unbearably loud in a room. You'd have to literally shout to speak to people.
And.. Holy cow... The bass on this thing is almost the equivalent of having a dustbin with a 12" sub dropped in it. It's unreal. You'd really have to hear it to believe it. I think the bass digs deeper than the Kaboom, but the Kaboom delivers more punch. Which is crazy, because the woofers on this thing are smaller.
I think a lot of the bass is attributed to the unique design of the tunnels. The shape is hilarious, but it does look freaking sweet. There's no mistaking this thing for anything else except from an utter beast.
When it first came through the door I grabbed an old Sandisk M2 (in a little USB adaptor) with some random high-quality MP3s on it (hasn't been touched in 2 years!) and hit Play USB. The box comes with X-Bass on, as a default, and left at that setting, I think I got to 15 before things started falling off of the walls (slight exaggeration, but it felt like that).
It's certainly got very rich mids and surprisingly clear highs. They're not 'sparkling' highs, like a good speaker system, but the clarity is definitely there... Which is much appreciated. When you put the EQ to Rock, you get the Cheshire Cat smile, which accentuates the high and low end and definitely helps with the treble. Even on 'Flat' the treble sounds clear.
The mids are still rich and creamy, even for the Rock-EQ setting trying to recess them.
As for the lows, you'd really have to hear this thing to believe it. I don't think I've heard such deep, rumbling, punching bass without the assistance of a sub-woofer.
Usually, from a boombox, you'd expect dull-lifeless-highs, a flat mid-range and a ton of muddy bass, but this thing is fun to listen to. The bass does get dirtier when you hit X-Bass, but hey, people love bass when they're partying.
I can't say that this thing is as 'warm' as a TDK3, but it's certainly more exciting and lively - Also, the bass doesn't crunch every now and again, it booms. Literally, like a jet has hit the sound barrier.
What really surprised me was that I tried some 128Kbps streaming radio (from an iPhone5) via USB and Aux (and the Aux was terrible), and the music sounded FLAT.. Like, really, really bad. My heart sank a little thinking that my first playthrough with the memory stick was a bit of placebo.
... But then I grabbed the FLAC of the same song encoded it to a high-quality MP3, using these settings:
LAME VBR MP3
Quality=0 (highest)
Average = 192Kbps (V2)
Minimum Bitrate =160Kbps
Maximum Bitrate = 320Kbps [Obviously ]
And the difference was night and day. The boombox really came to life. This thing relies on high quality source material, which is exceptional. Usually for a boombox you'd get away with 128Kbps source material and you can't tell the difference between that and lossless.
At least there's a great aspect of quality to this thing. I appreciate the fact that they've really went all-out with this and tried to make it a bit of good kit, than just sticking a boombox on the market because it's summer!
Btw, Shawn, I plugged a couple of phones into the Aux-In on the back, just to give it a shot... And it was brutal! There was hardly any sound at all coming through the speakers, and the bass was non-existent...
You'd think that the Sharp would amp the analog aux signal in a similar way to the DAC (USB and iPod dock) signals. I wonder why the aux is so poor, I've not torn it down so I don't know what stands in the way between the aux-input and the speakers and I don't know what kind of DACs are in place between the USB + iPod inputs.
I've only tried the 3.5mm input though, I haven't tried using an external audio player with the 6.35mm (guitar or mic) input yet.
What are your thoughts on the aux input?

What are your thoughts on the aux input?
Have you tried a Cassette Walkman or a CD Player into the AUX input?
I believe those have a higher mw output to possibly sound better through the aux
Do you have Microphone to plug into the 6.35mm (guitar or mic) input ( 1/4 inch ) input?
mark.gf575 - 2013-05-09 07:57
You can get these for less than £100 now from the Sharp outlet site on epay with FREE P+P
jamie.mcallister - 2013-05-09 09:04
I have a Cmoy amp which I can hook up between the MP3 player and the boom box. I can always give that a shot.
What's strange is, the volume is kinda low when using the aux, but the bass is completely dead also - which I don't understand. It's like the signal isn't being processed properly...It almost sounds like the phone is powering the speakers, or the subs are only working in passive mode, like a radiator. Weird. At face value it appears that the aux input solely relies on the source to amp the signal high enough; like it bypasses the internal amp. Could be possible.
I know the Watt output on a mobile phone is brutal, but the resulting audio should sound similar to that which is being supplied by the DAC inputs. You should give it a shot and hear the difference between the aux and USB.
The only reason I really liked the aux feature was in case anyone wants to swoop in with their own device, easily; without the hassle of requiring an iPhone 4 or under and docking it (in the 'old' connector), using a memory card reader/mem stick or having an amp in between the MP3 device and the aux input.
I hardly use phono-to-phono these days anyway, I'd just stick a memory stick in there and forget about it.
I think I'm going to buy an iPod Classic 160GB today, because my S3 is terrible for music. I'd rather just have it as a phone for Internet and phone stuff, because as an Mp3 player it's horrible, I end up using my work BlackBerry.
I'm using the 32GB card from my S3 just now in the boombox, and it's the most usage it's had in a while. The only other time I play music from my S3 is via bluetooth to my Jawbone Big Jambox!
Ouch, I just paid £150 for mine on Sunday. That sucks. I might email Sharp and see what they have to say for themselves... See if I can claw back that 50 quid, cause it's still 50 of my hard earned dollars!
Considering the lack of inputs and features (no Bluetooth, no Apple Lightning, no DAB) I think they aimed a little high with the RRP price tag of £300. But I do think it's worth their £150 asking price, and a total steal at the new price of £100.. Could be the reason the Sharps are going so cheap - small design flaws?
Or maybe they're just shifting this stock until they release the new one with a lightning connector?
But overall, even at £150 I'm happy with the purchase. It's a serious sounding bit of kit, I have it on just now playing a DJ Fresh track, Hot Right Now (Zomboy Mix) and it just sounds so great for being a simple boom box. I'm totally blown away with it, especially for the price.
EDIT:
I can confirm that you need a high-power (Greater than the average 6-10mW of MP3 outputs) source for the aux input
According to the specs, the aux input is rated at 47 kOhms... Doh! (Most commonly seen on pre-amps?)
I used the microphone & guitar 6.35mm input and it works. Period. The individual volume controls work a treat too, but as always I'd be weary about hitting 100% on the pots.

Hehe, I just read that myself. I slapped my forehead when I realised that the damn specs would have been in the manual! I have the old-fashioned paper version out in front of me. I totally overlooked the input impedance yesterday..
Silly me!
But yeah, a Bobs Your Uncle mobile phone won't cut it!

I know, I'm a fool! I grabbed the manual, read it and said, "DOH!", checked my email and seen you linking me to the PDF.. I suppose RTFM applies here!
Ah well, it's not the end of the world. Spose I'll just have to amp any aux signal from a low-powered device, or use a device that has a higher mW output! (Or just stick to USB! )
I did a fair amount of listening on the Sharp today, and I'm still impressed. It certainly is a party box..
If you buy this, I'd recommend you keep it on the 'flat' or 'rock' EQ settings. They both give you a nice balance of bass, and warm tonal quality. The 'Rock' EQ sharpens up the high-end somewhat and emphasises the bass. The mid to high-end sound quality is an easy listen, the vocals sound natural and the percussion is clean, but not crisp. So you'll never get that percussion 'shrill' right down in the core of your bones, which is good, because you don't want your party guests (or yourself) wincing when the music is playing.
Considering its low price point it sounds good enough to entertain even the most seasoned audio enthusiasts. I think boomboxes like the Sharp and JVC Cube/Three take what used to be a dominantly low-end device and give it a fresh spin.
On another note, I just bought an iPod Classic, been after one for ages.. Just never bothered about it until today. The 32GB SD inside the Galaxy S3 just wasn't enough for music, photos, etc. etc. etc.
Now I have 160GB dedicated for music; leaving my S3s storage for everything else
Plus, the Classic still has the 30-pin connector, which is perfect, because I have a few devices at home which 'dock' (now including the Sharp), so it's compatible with those.
I've never been keen on docks though - Ever. Since Apple change compatibility through generations and have now abandoned it completely. That's why I went with the Jawbone Jambox lately, just bluetooth and aux. So you don't need a particular device (or particular model/generation) to use it.
