The Monster: Mars JS 100 - very special speakers

hifitom - 2013-03-12 13:59

Hello

One of the most impressive bboxes I know is the Mars JS 100 - a mini hifi-system, 20 kg heavy with lot's of power and a very special speaker design. The bass sit in the carry combo, the mid and the tweeter sit on top of the bbox fixed with a magnet. Not a very stable solution. After almost 30 years the little speakers on top see some damage - a problem, because the unique design - no exchange are on the market.

But now I found this: Mars, a brand from the german catalog-company "otto" also sold mini hifi speakers for home stereo systems ... with exactly those mid and tweeters! One of the tweeters in my JS 100 is damaged, and now I'm so happy to find those exchange units.

For shure not many of those JS 100 are out there - and even you find or got one, you might have the same problem to find the original exchange for those speakers. So check this out - just one problem is let: how to get them out? They are fixed with glue (a hard one) ...

Best wishes

TOM

thats a unique box for sure never seen one

samovar - 2013-03-12 14:13

wow, never seen one of these beasts! whereas shape suggest a box, i think it's more like a home stereo/hifi: 20 kilos means that it is not really portable, and the fragile tweeters suggest the same. wonderful: is it really 100 Watt?

bison - 2013-03-12 14:42

Never seen before,it looks eastern european.
East german?

lav.loo - 2013-03-12 14:58

very nice Tom, looks like it kicks ass

hifitom - 2013-03-12 15:17

Jow

East germany? No way! At this time the people in east of germany had no money to buy something like this (remember: in east germany, called "DDR", you have to wait 20 years to get a "car", from the order to get it! No joke. And than you get a "Trabant", a 30 hp plastic car which looked like it was 40 years old)... East and West germany was like north and south pole / two total different states, next to each other but sooo far away ...

"OTTO" is a west germany company with their own brands for clothes, hifi and photo, ... like in the USA walmart.

Not shure if it realy got 100 watts - just can tell you it's real loud. The 20 cm bass speakers are from "Westra", a very good high quality company ...

This has got to be one of the most interesting boxes I've ever seen! Hang on to it!

I assume it's got a digital tuner.....what's the battery requirements?

radio.raheem - 2013-03-12 16:54

Think id pass....never seen one before though

A Monster

Looks like it is as wide as the 777 sitting next to it. Really?

What is the woofer size?

Member HiFiTom had one of these...

This is clearly a mini-component system put in a box but it doesn't half look good.

This is a late post, but I have a question Tom.  The boxes enclosing the mids & tweeters are still the original boxes from Mars, right?  You just opened them up to install the new Otto drivers, right?

nickfish - 2014-06-13 10:56

Reli,

Tom has not been on here for over a year so might not respond. Someone else might know though......

they look like the original tweeter housings. i have this unit with the original tweeters.

jvc.floyd - 2014-06-14 05:33

Here are a few more images from Shizaudio and a video I found on youtube, one of the most unique portables I've seen in a while.

It looks much better without those tweeters Retro...it's almost like those tweeters were an after thought
