yeah maybe Traveler but i bet it sounds very nice, that 7 watts is'nt too bad compared to most of todays stereo's that are usually only 2 watts or so.

nice to see philips have kept the soundmachine name too, and the rotary controls are exactly the same as the 8614's.....i love it and can't wait for reviews if anyone happens to buy

They certainly earn points for being brave but a small box with small speakers buzzing around inside a basically empty box is going to sound crap.

If they had been truly brave they would have used 6 inch or more speakers with separate enclosures within the box and why not DAB? It would at least have future-proofed itself!

The extra cost of including DAB, bluetooth etc is mere pennies. Tight gits.

I would have happily stumped up £200 for the real deal. It will just be another buzzy little excuse for noise like all of the other garbage out there.

Seriously; If Crown can find a way to make a poorly made, lightweight box sound bassy and sweet; why can't Philips follow the lead? Bigger speakers make bigger sound!

lav.loo - 2013-03-29 09:14

not entirely true Nick, look at the pioneer sk909's speakers, very small but that box pounds and how do you know it's empty?? have you already got this box?? i think some people may be in for a pleasant surprise. but i have to agree that it would of defo looked better if it was bigger with bigger woofs

check out the bottom left side view of the box, it looks like a bass port, surely this must sound decent.

Maybe they are putting it out there as a feeler of sorts? If they sell a ton of them they might make bigger and better ones eventually. Don't think they'll make too big of a box tho in today's age of everything being compact.

philips have not made a decent sounding portable for a long time.

I think it looks really nice. The is the most nice looking boombox in years. The vertical CD player is really clever and is a actual throwback even.

...I'm afraid it will be very expensive though. Way too expensive for 7 watts of power with only DBB as a "sound enhancer"...
