A dead Crown arrived today...:(

Hi All,
Today I received a Crown CSC-950 from the bay out of Germany. According to the seller it would work perfectly, but when I connected the box nothing happened. No sound, no Light, nothing. The shipping box still looked kind of okay, but the radio has a big dented crack near the power plug. Not much effort was taken to protect the radio in the shipping box anyway... On the pics on the bay the dent wasn't there. I suspect, knowing the design of Crown boxes, that the motherboard is cracked. What are your experiences with these kinds of things?
It’s sad, because it’s a lovely boombox…

thats a bummer ! no doubt you will be contacting the seller
walkgirl - 2013-04-04 08:09
damn them mailpeopels!!!
docs - 2013-04-04 08:18
Sorry to hear about this, however, this isn't the mail people's fault its the idiotic seller that thinks a bit of newspaper, a piece of pencil lead and a lolly pop stick will protect it.
Open a claim via eBay/Payap and either settle for a partial refund or return it for 100% refund. The 950's are quite common so I'm sure another one will appear.

maybe it's just the power supply and not the motherboard. I agree with docs that the packaging was questionable
lav.loo - 2013-04-04 08:34
we always assume it's the packing but have you ever thought the seller could have 2 of the same box and he/she used the better one for the pics and sold the nakt one!
what ever the case it's devastating when this kind of thing happens sorry to hear of your situation Michiel.

At least a couple of pics from the seller are of this box for sure. There are some very distinguishable scratches on the pictures that are also on the box irl... Except for the dent... Another strange thing is a missing counter reset button.... it's there on the pics, but it wasn't on the box when I got her. I think it's somewhere in the inside of it... I can hear something is loose on the inside....
Yep, I send the seller a message.... unfortunately my German isn't good, so I did it in English.... Hope he does understand it.... Otherwise its going to be Google translate...
This was my first buy of a box via eBay. Normally I get them from the local market. But finding a Crown is rather difficult over here. I'm reluctant to try it again... These radios are just to vulnerable to send via mail I guess...
Positive thing is I got a nice Sanyo M9994 locally yesterday evening...

Got a message from the seller to send it back so he will try to repair it... Really not like the idea for the box to have the same journey twice... What are your toughts about it? Think it's best to send it back and ask for a refund....
docs - 2013-04-04 09:44
Send back full refund, get from different seller.
michiel - 2013-04-04 09:53
Thanks, that's exacly my answer to the seller....

Once I had a similar experience on ebay.de. You did the right thing, when the damage is so great it's no use keeping the box in order to repair it. It's simply not worth trying.
Sometimes couriers are careless, but certain sellers are criminals in that their packaging is often non-existent. And your experience seems to confirm that.
Don't worry for the 950: as docs has already pointed out, it's a pretty common item and you'll soon find another. Hopefully in great shape.

Sad news.....this is why i don't like posting out..as sometimes you can send in bomb proof packing and they still get smashed.....these Curriers shouldn't get any money until your goods arrive undamaged imho....feel for you mate
michiel - 2013-04-04 12:44
The box is going back... I feel sad, it would be a very nice clean box without this issue... It looks so nice next to my Crown 980... Definetly need an other one.... Thank all for your sympathizing words!...

Hi,cant you take a look at the power supply and connections inside, could easly be a cracked solder join or fuse popped out, then bill the seller for repairs or have it repaired and send the seller the bill etc get an estimate. The seller will only pass it on to someone else or throw it in a bin.Take a pic of inside for us and we will all take a look.Iam a qualified electronics engineer and radio ham operator, callsign M0JRG.73's

I don't want to open it. But I tested it with batteries, stil completely dead.... If it was a cheap buy, I wouldn't bother fixing it. But it wasn't... I send it back....and forget about buying boomboxes on the bay and getting them here via mail....
Besides that, I'm completely in love with my new M9994.. This thing is really amazing! So much power in a small package!. Spend a couple of hours cleaning it and it looks lovely now... It only needs new belts.... Think this is going to be my favorite for a long long time!...

michiel - 2013-04-05 14:27
Thanks Lav Loo! The 9994 stole my heart! It must be the classic gti of the boomboxes!
Nice movies! I hope this guy isn't working tomorrow, cause the box is leaving for Germany tomorrow.....
