I'm new to the boombox game and i'm looking to start collecting. Just purchased my first boombox ( JVC RC-M70JW). Everything on the box works but i have passed up boxes because of dead tape decks and other issues. My question is how do you go about repairing the vintage boomboxes? Any info. I would be grateful for.

Do you have the ability to operate a Spray can of Deoxit into your Switches followed  by an short blast of air?

Next suggestion is to take picture's of everything that you do,

Once you crack the case open of your RC-M70, take a picture's of where EVERY   wire's goto BEFORE you unplug them  then Continue taking pictures of every little step to make inside your box as you do whatever, as you may come to a point that  and then all you have to do is review your pictures and voila  

So your pretty much on your own.   YES !

After you have attempted to repair and or service your own boombox and or

After you have exhausted your Money to a technician to repair your boombox - and they did NOT or couldn't due to a lack of part's or know-how -

Welcome and congrats on an awesome first box!  looks in good condition...if you only get one box then this would be an excellent contender for that position!

My tip would be to get the service manual off the web...if you can't find it let me know.  Its just that some of the internal screws aren't so obvious on this one when dismantling.

Get some switch cleaner (Servisol, Deoxit etc) and spray it into the switches, sliders and headphone socket and work each one back and forth 30 or 40 times.  Blast with compressed air (one of those cans you generally use on computers) and then leave to dry.

For the belts its a case of working out approximate sizes you need then just order a selection pack off ebay or the like then trial and error to find the right one.

Most of us started doing this sort of thing with no experience so just work slowly and carefully and you'll be fine...I always took pictures of each stage in case I forgot where a lead or a screw went.  I also note which screws went where as they're often different sizes and working out which one went where afterwards can be a nightmare otherwise.  If you get stuck at any point just post a comment on here and if you've got a picture then that might make it easier.
