So because I'm such a helpful fella I agreed to fix newbie Schneil's Sharp GF9191 in exchange for a few beers and even arranged for my sister to bring the box up to me.  It arrived Friday night, stayed the weekend (lol) and has gone back this afternoon so Neil should be able to pick it up tomorrow.

The deck was knacked, it sounded crackly, and the vu meters were uneven, it was also a bit grubby...so the usual problems.

I said I'd post some pics to show Neil what I'd done so here they are:

 1. Box opened up

2. Deck removed

3. Plate removed from back of the deck to get the flywheel with its gunky tyre out...cleaned up and replaced with some silicon tubing.  Also replaced the main deck tyre/wheel as well as it was very unevenly worn and was pulling the tape off line.  Cleaned the heads as well, and realigned the play head as it was playing really muffled.

4. All sliders and switches thoroughly switch cleaned

5. Neil this is the record bar which you should always clean on a box, sits behind the tape deck in this machine.

6. Filthy woofers cleaned and repainted

7. The main case ready for reassembly after a thorough cleaning

8. The front got a bath and did a bit of sun-bathing

9. Reassembled and now fully working sitting in front of mine

If it happens all the time in all settings then maybe the record bar needs a bit more of a clean would be my best guess...did you whip the deck out to get to the bar properly?  I always clean the headphone socket too as the audio goes through it.

Bit of a concern that it didn't do it at first tho?...if the above doesn't sort it then you need someone with electronics knowledge and that aint me

I live in Norfolk, but have friends in both Doncaster and Huddersfield, I also get around the county on a fairly regular basis and would have no issue dropping off to you.

reasonable condition would be my answer but the deck does chew up tapes and guess that needs a serious service. I can get the unit apart although I have to say it's been a lot of years since I last striped one down. So in a nut shell, a good clean, service to cassette deck, belts pinch roller and I bet flywheel.

I don't mind doing it but I'd rather do it for goods than cash like some nice reels or parts or other such boombox related stuff...money is boring

Cheers, sadly I have but one boom box, the one in question, I have only a few tapes, so not really sure what I have to offer in return for the work? I prefer the barter system but at this stage I am limited as to what I can offer... I shall give it some further thought though lol

Back in around 1978 I was looking through my mums mail order catalogue and I saw the GF9191 it reached out and grabbed me, I had to have it, no question, I was 17 and I paid weekly for it, I had it till 1989 when it went wrong, without thinking I done the unthinkable, outed it. Move forward 24 years and looking back I realised this item, and one other, a Sharp Optonica turntable, were my first two ventures into the world of HiFi. Regrets, I've had a few... Getting rid of these two items now really saddens me, therefor I set out to rectify this. All I need is the turntable, no vinyl to play on it but that can be purchased once I have sorted that (may not be able to), hopefully. The boombox will go in the conservatory and the few tapes remaining will get good use. How we look back as we move forward... Lol

Cool story, I think most of us have similar ones...would be great to get the turntable and boombox back together. Was your turntable an upright one? My turntable is a Sharp VZ2000 which is like the love child of the two lol

No it was the RP7100 with APLD a good looking deck that would sit nicely in any lounge in the land, also purchased from a catalogue, about a year after the GF. sadly my mistake was to move with the times, out with tape and vinyl, in with CD and then iPods, curse that compressed sound. Oh the need for a tardis...

I always worried the vibration from the speakers would jolt the stylus on the record, guess I had that wrong...

They turned down the bass on it to prevent this...it sounds great with certain types of music but a bit crappy with others due to the lack of bass...put a bit of Kraftwerk on the turntable and it sounds great but put a bit of Knife Party on and it'll sound really lame lol...I love the old VZ tho despite this slight limitation

It does have those classic looks and yes, I can imagine now days, a real talking point.

now (...and AO the bagger predicted it...) i decided to restore my 9191 as well, as it's for me one of the nicest units i ever had and will probably be the only box besides a daily-use beach-kaboom i'm gonna keep.

besides belts mine also needs a new motor (as i posted in the "parts for sale"-departement even found a dealer with fair prices on mabuchi-motors), idler etc, worst is the missing battery-lid as there's almost no other one matching the 9191, but i'll get one one day - anybody with a 3D-printer here ??? there's a need for those !

Hello everyone

I've got a few other things on at the moment, so not been on here much.

However my Sharp 9191 is looking the part in my diningroom.  Also my JVC 656 is in daily use in the kitchen.  Also Andy that Panny box you sorted me out is a monster!

I might have a Panny egg for sale soon.  It's pretty mint, just needs a clean.  Anyone interested?

si-my new 9191-i have an old middle from a sharp gx 300 at home with a working deck-is it likely this utilised the same idler tyre arrangement as the 9191?if so i can rob it from that for mine?????
