The sad state of today's boombox displays.
retro - 2013-11-08 19:47
Took this on my phone while shopping...depressing isn't it? The only thing that actually resembled a boombox , was the iHome IP4. Has anyone ever seen the red Sony ZSH10CP in person? It's massive!
driptip - 2013-11-08 20:09
you are right it looks sad. about the sony , massive or not , looks like it belongs in a construction site.
radio.raheem - 2013-11-08 20:37

indeed a sad state of the art! what are the horrors of the first pic? the heavy duty red Sony is the only one box that seems to be aware of an heritage. at least as far as its design is concerned

It's difficult to imagine that today's youngsters have the same (if any) excitment that we had. All the modern stuff looks so dull! Cool pics from 1983 though!
shane - 2013-11-09 03:45
I know we can all be guilty of looking at the past through rose tinted glasses but NO, not this time.
the top two pictures are but poor relations to the one from 1983.
Oh doctor, bring your tardis and let me loose in that shop...
what do we have nowadays, a load of flat touch screen gear, how can you style a flat screen.
moan over, sorry...

Just got my 17 year old son to look at the pictures, he wants the 1983 shop on our high street.
my three children 25, 17 and 15 love my GF9191, my eldests partner wants one for christmas, he's 21.
themightyrepairer - 2013-11-09 04:31

Yep, the youngsters want this stuff. Just gave my friends son Jake a small Grundig stereo radio cassette and he loves it. Uses the cassette player more than his ipod! He is only 13. That must say somthing!

That may true TMR, but in 30 nyears will this generation be lusting over pictures from todays' shelves or will quality be a thing retired in the 80's?
Only time will tell....
radio.raheem - 2013-11-09 22:24
Quality went out of the window in the 90's the TDK 3 speaker boombox prooves that and so many other things....and im not just saying that beause im an old fart....the last deecent boombox made imho was the kaboom in 2000 weather you like them or not....i wouldn't buy any of todays trash....the tdk was the last straw for me

Coincidentally i was there yesterday ret, i see what you mean...on the boxes....seems like they're moving everything to one location though.... sales are low and maybe rent is too much now...was playing around with the Numark DJ system they had there...very nice set with cool features...

J&R used to be one of my favorite places to shop since I was in high school, great prices and a knowledgeable staff, but they just cant up with the super sites like Amazon and Newegg without loosing too much unfortunately.
blaster - 2013-11-15 06:04
i know for me too ret,.....as we use to call it back in the day Juniors....i use to work around there in the 80s...as a messenger and downtown has changed allot ever since we lost the WTC....we use to have record explosion record shops in so many locations in that area...the cheap hotdog store...modells, the wiz,...so many more stores we had....allot of memories in that area....your right online shopping has changed the world..i even tried to apply to work at J&R a couple of years ago....they never got back to me.....times are bad....

This times we are living they are all ''rounded'' no angles, no style,
no character !!
Where is Maradona? Where is Michael Jordan?
Even cars are rounded
they all look the same to me imho
Check a Porsche Carrera of the 60s and compare it with the latest model.
This is the sad state of all todays ''toys''.
I m not putting everything in the same basket but exceptons are soooo rare

Can we have a minuites flachulance in respect to the REAL boomboxes

I tottaly agree with you, particularly on the matter of the Porsche Carrera! The 1960's machine does look better! (And the Porsche is one of the better looking modern cars!) Everone is running similar C.A.D. software. Therefore everything looks the same!

Another nice trip down memory lane, if only I could find a shop like this now!
smeats1976 - 2013-11-17 05:36
Have you seen this Seb? It's a shop called Turbo Sonic in Tokyo! It was featured on http://pocketcalculatorshow.com about 10 years ago but I'm not sure what their stock is like now!

The main problem today is most people do not care about the quality of the music. More of quantity, how may can I download. Or how good are my "Beats" headphones. In the 70's 80's and early 90's there was an emphasis on sound quality from the main device i.e. your receiver, amp walkman cd player etc.
There were more magazines dedicated to Audio, Stereo Review, HI-FI, Specialty stereo stores, heck you could get a walkman or boom box just about anywhere. Department store, mail order even Macy's had one heck of a electronics department, They were inventing things to make music sound better, Dolby, DBX, BBE, sonic maximizers, equalizers you name it. Yamaha had Natural Sound, Aiwa had DSL, Sony Mega Bass, Panasonic with Ambience. All the manufactures were trying to out do each other with who could make the music sound better. We were spoiled to be given so many choices from so many manufactures. Now it is a matter of plug and play and will this thing charge my device at the same time. So glad I am 40 and not 16 like my daughter. Even though when I play her one of her fav. songs through my BBE system she instantly perks up. Todays ears still know the difference, the manufactures just think we no longer care!
