Boombox Pillow
tster - 2013-12-02 12:46
Had this for a few years, not often you see a pillow like this in a mainstream shop but this was bought at my local soft furnishings store. 10 points if you name that box!
docs - 2013-12-02 12:49
For my first 10 points its a 9191 or the Japanese 305 version.

I have the very same pillow, on my bed, also an ipod (please excuse the swearing) cover with the same unit on it, a Sharp GF9191. My very first, and still my favorite, boombox, I know it may not be the best but one can never forget a first love...

I loved my GF-9191 as well Shane, they are great boxes. Nice pillow!

Loved, past tense, does that mean you no longer have one or you love another now?

Yes past tense I'm afraid. I had a mint GF-9191 and I sold it (for a reasonable price). I have come to regard this as one of my big mistakes; it was a lovely machine. I would definitely have another one, they sound good and look great; one of the iconic radio's of the era.

Been there, done that, got the t shirt, well pillow
I have my one, which is in very good condition, was gonna get northerner to clean and refurb it for me but work has delayed things for me dramatically. I have another in good condition for my son-in-law Xmas pressie. I also have a third, in poor condition, in need of some real tlc and interior body repair work (plastic tab that the door hinge sits in is broke) but felt it could become a donor of parts.

I think he will, he constantly goes on about mine, how nice it looks, how nice it sounds, it's a surprise for him.

Oh how I wish, give me a spreadsheet to build and hey presto, done, but rebuild a boombox, possibly beyond my skill set, need some teaching in that area I guess lol
seb968 - 2013-12-02 14:16
I should never have sold my 9191!! It may not be a top end box but who cares! Thats not allways what it's about. They are just a cool icon of a great era, I think thats what 9191 is about for me! One day I hope to come across another good one; my collection lacks completeness without it!

I'm sure you will pick up the skills Shane! The 9191 is an excellent machine to learn on.

shane - 2013-12-02 14:26
Never been very practical in that way, sadly, I guess I have to learn some new skills, when work slacks off and gives me some time...
what's the big sharp, a 777?
northerner - 2013-12-02 14:29
seb968 - 2013-12-02 14:31
The GF-777 is one of the real biggies!! Northerner will help you with case refurbishment and mechanics, I will help you with the electronics, sure you will pick up the skills; you are in the right place!
seb968 - 2013-12-02 14:33
Gf-9000's are quite nice though Si.

They are indeed lovely VU's! Anyway I'm not one to talk when it comes to having multiple machines of the same model!
shane - 2013-12-02 14:42
A curious looking box but it does draw one in

The 9000 is certainly a bold statement from Sharp!
northerner - 2013-12-02 14:57
seb968 - 2013-12-02 15:00
Si, did you ever find a replacement power supply for your 9000?
shane - 2013-12-02 15:00
You must be a very patient man, able to wait that long, not sure I could lol
on another note and totally off topic, I got the optonica turntable rp7100, so that is again connected to the 9191, happy days.
seb968 - 2013-12-02 15:02
I love that Optonica gear!
shane - 2013-12-02 15:05
Nice stuff in its day, and this one is just over 30 years old and never been used still boxed...
seb968 - 2013-12-02 15:17

Who's gonna call Mercedes W126 not a top car, even there are vehicles with better specifications nowadays?
It still remains top end car.
It doesn't matter what year it was produced, if it's a deluxe car. Years just add the value to this car.
The same with GF-9191, it was a top end box of the 1978.
And still remains the same.
That is a very good point; nicely put.

I wholeheartedly agree, well said, I love the 9191, the look, the sound, everything, so does everyone else that comes to the house and hears it.
A great box in very many ways.

As someone who has spent all his adult life with the DIY philosophy (Don't Involve Yourself) I have not built many practical skills, can paint, wallpaper, tile, grout, that sort of thing but repairing items, nah never done it, to my shame... Let me know how you get on, always willing to learn (not too old I hope).

Sadly the pace of life now days for too many of us means time is all our enemy.
i have two problems (unless you speak to the wife then it's hundreds)
1, too much month left at the end of the money.
2, too little time to do all my new masters require of me (50 to 60 hour weeks), such fun.
shane - 2013-12-03 12:08
What glue do you recommend bearing in mind it is a stressed part?
