Boombox Pillow

tster - 2013-12-02 12:46

Had this for a few years, not often you see a pillow like this in a mainstream shop but this was bought at my local soft furnishings store. 10 points if you name that box!

Boombox Pillow

docs - 2013-12-02 12:49

For my first 10 points its a 9191 or the Japanese 305 version.

shane - 2013-12-02 12:53

I have the very same pillow, on my bed, also an ipod (please excuse the swearing) cover with the same unit on it, a Sharp GF9191. My very first, and still my favorite, boombox, I know it may not be the best but one can never forget a first love...

I loved my GF-9191 as well Shane, they are great boxes. Nice pillow!

Loved, past tense, does that mean you no longer have one or you love another now?

Yes past tense I'm afraid. I had a mint GF-9191 and I sold it (for a reasonable price). I have come to regard this as one of my big mistakes; it was a lovely machine. I would definitely have another one, they sound good and look great; one of the iconic radio's of the era.

Been there, done that, got the t shirt, well pillow

I have my one, which is in very good condition, was gonna get northerner to clean and refurb it for me but work has delayed things for me dramatically. I have another in good condition for my son-in-law Xmas pressie. I also have a third, in poor condition, in need of some real tlc and interior body repair work (plastic tab that the door hinge sits in is broke) but felt it could become a donor of parts.

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:02

Can never have too many 9191's! I bet that third one is salvageable tho...a bit of casing repair ain't no biggie

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:07

I would never sell my 9191...as you say, not a top end box but there's just something cool about them...a great portable size, decent sound, and looks the mutts

I think he will, he constantly goes on about mine, how nice it looks, how nice it sounds, it's a surprise for him.

Oh how I wish, give me a spreadsheet to build and hey presto, done, but rebuild a boombox, possibly beyond my skill set, need some teaching in that area I guess lol

I should never have sold my 9191!! It may not be a top end box but who cares! Thats not allways what it's about. They are just a cool icon of a great era, I think thats what 9191 is about for me! One day I hope to come across another good one; my collection lacks completeness without it!

I'm sure you will pick up the skills Shane! The 9191 is an excellent machine to learn on.

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:21

Well I can rebuild cases and build spreadsheets too...amongst other things I'm a qualified accounting technician, not that I do any accounting lol

Well if you need cases fixing I'm your man (once I've sorted the BIG Sharp I just bought)

Never been very practical in that way, sadly, I guess I have to learn some new skills, when work slacks off and gives me some time...

what's the big sharp, a 777?

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:29

Sadly not that big   Too pricy for a cheap Northern bloke lol...it's a GF9000

seb968 - 2013-12-02 14:31

The GF-777 is one of the real biggies!! Northerner will help you with case refurbishment and mechanics, I will help you with the electronics, sure you will pick up the skills; you are in the right place!

Gf-9000's are quite nice though Si.

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:36

They are indeed lovely VU's!  Anyway I'm not one to talk when it comes to having multiple machines of the same model!

The 9000 is certainly a bold statement from Sharp!

northerner - 2013-12-02 14:57

I was after a 9000 as soon as I saw a pic of one...it's huge and I really like the styling. Got 8 inch woofers!...tho they benefit from upgrading which I'll do on this new one. Trouble is I got my sister to pick it up so I don't get it until I see her at Christmas

Si, did you ever find a replacement power supply for your 9000?

You must be a very patient man, able to wait that long, not sure I could lol

on another note and totally off topic, I got the optonica turntable rp7100, so that is again connected to the 9191, happy days.

seb968 - 2013-12-02 15:02

I love that Optonica gear!

shane - 2013-12-02 15:05

Nice stuff in its day, and this one is just over 30 years old and never been used still boxed...

seb968 - 2013-12-02 15:17

Boxed! Thats a nice find! As i say I have allways liked the look of Optonica gear; liked teir adds too! Check this out!

Who's gonna call Mercedes W126 not a top car, even there are vehicles with better specifications nowadays?
It still remains top end car.
It doesn't matter what year it was produced, if it's a deluxe car. Years just add the value to this car.

The same with GF-9191, it was a top end box of the 1978.
And still remains the same.

That is a very good point; nicely put.

I wholeheartedly agree, well said, I love the 9191, the look, the sound, everything, so does everyone else that comes to the house and hears it.

A great box in very many ways.

jt.techno - 2013-12-03 11:06

9191 great box - found quite easy box to work on - I have one I've sorted and one in need of tlc (with same hinge tab breakage too) - something I'll probably tackle in new year when things quieten down around here :-)

As someone who has spent all his adult life with the DIY philosophy (Don't Involve Yourself)  I have not built many practical skills, can paint, wallpaper, tile, grout, that sort of thing but repairing items, nah never done it, to my shame... Let me know how you get on, always willing to learn (not too old I hope).

Boombox Pillow

I really like this. In fact I like it so much I'm going to get a pair for my wifes xmas.....unless any of you guys think its a bad idea?

northerner - 2013-12-03 11:37

No I think its a great idea...if you like castration

seb968 - 2013-12-03 11:37

"D.I.Y - Don't Involve Yourself" I like it, thats really funny Shane!  I am not very good when it comes to wallpaper and even worse with tiles!

northerner - 2013-12-03 11:44

That hinge fixing shouldn't be too tricky, its internal so doesn't have to be neat or pretty...some bits of plastic, some glue, and a dremel and you're laughing

jt.techno - 2013-12-03 11:55

Hi Shane - what I find is that it is often time that is my enemy i.e. just not enough of it to do all that I want to do ... so although I'm a bit blasé about it being an easy box to work on, everything tends to be more time consuming than you expect ... so it may be a while before I even get to look at it ... but when I do, I'll update you on progress ... the trouble is the hinge is least of its problems ... the main problem on my iffy 9191 is a continuous left audio channel popping noise ... which I think will involve a bit of capacitor replacement ... which I can see may take me a while ... anyway, wish me luck ... I hope you find time to try a fix to yours too :-)

northerner - 2013-12-03 11:55

I can only do DIY as my last house was 250 years old and I had to gut it back to bare stonework...you soon learn new skills when you get builders quotes! Did the lot myself...damp proofing, rewiring, replumbing etc...it nearly killed me lol. Moved to a low maintenance house a couple of years back and now will barely lift a paintbrush

northerner - 2013-12-03 11:56

Got some 9191 parts if you need them

shane - 2013-12-03 11:59

Great idea, you go for it, I feel sure you will get a great surprise in return lol. Let me know how you get on please, if all goes well I may consider getting another for my wife's side of the bed.

jt.techno - 2013-12-03 12:00

Re the pillow, now what would be cool would be to bury a set of speakers into the depth of it so it can actually boom like a 9191 (although on quieter volume, else I guess deafness would ensue quite quickly) ... there's a DIY project challenge for somebody out there with some "spare" time :-)

Sadly the pace of life now days for too many of us means time is all our enemy.

i have two problems (unless you speak to the wife then it's hundreds)

1, too much month left at the end of the money.

2, too little time to do all my new masters require of me (50 to 60 hour weeks), such fun.

shane - 2013-12-03 12:08

What glue do you recommend bearing in mind it is a stressed part?

jt.techno - 2013-12-03 12:13

Well I just searched interweb and found they already make a "Sound Asleep" pillow with speakers built in that you could put the 9191 pillow case around to make the ultimate boompillow ... if you then actually plug it into a 9191 by your bedside then the circle is complete (I was going to attach pic but my Apple smaple mobile version of Stereo2Go doesn't seem to allow me - d'oh - never mind - you get the idea :-)
