Interesting. Never heard a PC-55. Starting to want one now...

"Foogernugger" isn't shy with his beliefs, either (not that there is anything wrong in that).

jameswp67 - 2009-03-26 12:09

But some radios top load their sound, others bottom load it...maybe the kaboom is louder at 3/4 volume?

skippy1969 - 2009-03-26 15:18

I have to disagree here. After owning a PC550 nd I currently own a Kaboom, I would have to say that the PC55/PC550 is a very high quality great sounding unit with very high standards for it's tape deck which is second to none as far as boomboxes go. But I think the Kaboom blows it completely out of the water for sound and portabilty. I've had the pictures knocked right off the walls with my Kaboom,I can't say the same for the PC/55/PC550. (IMHO) of course.

the kaboom is a nice modern boombox. it has a very deep sounding bass.
this being said i have often wondered how much of the bass from a kaboom is actually from the kaboom and how much of it is from the walls of the room i am in acting as a passive radiator.
this being said there is no doubt about it the kaboom is extremely bassy and very loud.
the sound quality of a pc55 is a different thing all together i often hear people refer to this as a audiophile quality boombox and compared to a home stereo.
i dont agree with that statement fully.
it does sound very good and very balanced.
there is a good representation of all frequencies and the bass is there but just not as big sounding as a kaboom.

niether one of them are as loud as the sony fh215rs i have are louder than the pc55 and the kaboom.
they have more bass than the kaboom as well.

i do think the kaboom is a smart very good sounding product, the pc55 tho is a much better made boombox.
the amp in the pc55 has a big heavy tranformer and well its construction is really solid and was made for someone with money to spend.
the kaboom is well made but,it does not have a super warm rich sound compared to a pc55.
the amp is completely different design,a good one for what it is,but i dont think that it sounds as musical as its ancestor.

i thought the pc55 was absolutely the best boombox i have ever heard for jazz, blues and classical. the kaboom sounds fantastic for electronic music hip hop and other bass heavy music.
i dont think it sounds that great for old school rock or other styles of music.
i mean on a huge multi track recording the pc55 just kills the kaboom to my ears.
the mids and his of the pc55 are pretty hard to beat.
if i had to pick one both being in perfect shape i would take the pc55. its just a better made unit.
comparing the kaboom to a pc55 isnt really a fair comparison tho. i mean the price point in todays dollars of a pc55 would be so high a device like that could never succeed in todays economy. i mean it would cost so much that it just would be out of reach of the average person.
the eq on the pc55 is really good its a real eq i mean alot of boomboxes have eqs on them but they are crappy circuits and dont really do much.
i would also have to say the tuner on the pc55 is extremely good as well i mean it sounds very good and the detail seems very nice on it.
the kaboom has one of the worst tuners on it i have ever had on a boombox. both of them are equally as bad on the kaboom.

if i was going to a party and had to bring a portable stereo i would take a kaboom.
if i was stranded on a desert island with only one of the two i would take the pc55.
at least i would be able to get some shortwave stations with it while i waited for rescue.
btw the shortwave on the pc55 is very decent as well.

I Agree totally. It's the same with HiFi equipment , especially the speakers. Every speaker has his caracteristics in sound and what sounds best with wich speaker. I heard the B&W nautilus 803 once with the Hell freezes over from the eagles. Man, this was extreme
The kaboom is made for electronic music , thats true. I don't like the sound when playing rock music. The PC 55 /550 is still on my wishlist
I never heard one but they look so cool /hightech

i dont know spruceing up someones place for a few weeks for a boombox sounds like you are getting burned.
i hope she is a nice old lady and gives you some deniros as well.
i mean up here people get paid on average thirty a hour for that kind of work.

i think a m90 is a amazing piece of equipment and even tho the sound has its short comings with fidelity it sounds absolutey cool.
i would not say its louder than a pc55 i would say it is different and well how could it not be.
the m90 has a big one piece chassis and the pc55 has two speakers separated with wooden cabinets.
i think there is a pretty good chance a m90 could sound even better if there was dampening material inside the boombox.
i think the reason a lot of three piece boomboxes sound so good is there is less phase cancellation from the speakers.
i also think that the ammount of stereo separation on a one piece with huge woofers is not going to be as good as a three piece with high quality smaller speakers.

the eq on a pc55 is very decent for a boombox.
however it only just boosts or cuts different frequencies and the tone and treble knobs on a m90 should get you a good ammount of control over those two things too.

i think a kaboom is great i really do,but if i take one of the rick rubin recorded cash series cds,it dosent sound so great.

bass is all about personal taste.
for me a pc55 has more than enough bass right out of the box.
i dont think it is a audiophile quality boombox.
i dont think any boombox is audiophile quality to tell you the truth.

i like the way some of them sound very much, but part of the reason i do like them is for how they would try to cover up the inaccurate nature of the sound they produce.

some of them sound better than others.
with the higher end boomboxes tho they all pretty much sound great.
so much of what sounds good is just personal opinion.
the two technologies between the pc55 and kaboom are so far apart in so many ways.
both of them are really cool for different reasons.

billpc55 - 2009-03-27 12:19

you know my pc550 i could swear that my pc55 took ten d batteries.
not eight. i could be wrong but i could swear that it did.

the pc550 i think was rated at about the same wattage as the kaboom too.
the pc550 i had the big black one i would almost swear it took ten d cell batteries.

i mean i cannot see how that box could have been rated at fifty watts if it did not. i dont have it anymore but it seems strange that it would have only taken eight.

skippy1969 - 2009-03-29 03:20

I think you may have been mistaken about the PC550 taking 10 batteries Bill. I had one too and it took 8 just like the PC55 does. Nod Yes

billpc55 - 2009-03-29 14:52

you guys could be right.
i mean i am surprised that box only used ten tho. for a eight d cel box it sure is a loud sucker.
well none the less
i would still want a pc55 over a kaboom in most circumstances.

billpc55 - 2009-03-29 14:53

let my stubborn self rephrase that. Big Grin
i am sure you guys are correct.
hehe

billpc55 - 2009-03-29 16:48

i sold my pc550 i admit i regretted it ever since i did.
it went with three other boomboxes for 225 bucks.
mine wasnt in the best shape but it could have been perfect with a bit of work.
i paid twelve bucks for the three boomboxes i sold with it.
i really loved that boombox but i for some reason got rid of it.
i would love to get another some time i will.

I sold mine too Bill,regretfully.... Frown

jvc.floyd - 2009-03-29 17:42

i use my pc 55 more than any other box ,and i love it .

billpc55 - 2009-03-29 18:33

i mean dont get me wrong i was happy to make a nice profit off my tiny investment.
i have another radio i got for very cheap not a boombox i am thinking of selling.
however remembering my sellers remorse of the pc55 has me wondering if i should do it.
i dont really need the money.
that being said i could make a pretty nice piece of change of this one.
yeah pc55 is wonderful.
you know tho kabooms are too just different really.
i mean like comparing a new dodge challenger to a old one really.
