Montgomery Ward Radio Ad, 1979

One of the folks I do computer help with was lovely enough to bring this in for me today, found in her mother's affects. It's a super rare item (well, for me) if not just for it's age, but for the fact theres never been a Montgomery Ward in Australia, so lord only knows how it got here. Here's the scan:

Hope you guys get as much of a buzz as I did.

Rock On.

NO WAY! I can't believe you posted this!

That pictured box was my first boombox ever!!!!!

I never really talk about that one much, because it ended up being replaced by a much nicer Sharp GF-9292 a couple of years later!

I have actually been looking for one of those online but do not know the model number. Does anyone out there know anything about these? Like who made them for Montgomery Ward, or what model number it it is?

What a world we live in, eh? From the other side of the world, where there has never been a Montgomery Ward store, you upload a scan from a 29 year old publication advertisement. Gotta love the internet!

This is another perfect example of how the internet has made the world smaller.

Hahah! This little piece of paper just made my day TWICE! Excellent stuff.

If you'd like the full ad (it's double sided with luggage and a jazzy portable tv combo on the other side), it's in absoloutely pristine condition, just let me know JT and I'll whack her off in the post.

Rock On.

JT, what a great, amazing coincidence that this Ward's boombox was your first! Jens (*TPR*) doesn't seem to sign in much these days (he's working on the new database), but he would certainly know the model number.

And Gluecifer, thanks for the scan! And talk about generosity... You're willing to send the ad to JT from Australia, no "transaction" needed! Very, very nice!

This is a great hook-up of two S2G members. Like JT said, it makes you glad there's an Internet!

What amazes me is how much these boxes cost "back in the day." I mean, $149.88 on sale for a medium-size box! Can you imagine how much those 1979 dollars would be worth in today's money? It's staggering! I'll try to remember that the next time I'm temped to complain about boombox prices on eBay. Smile

Thanks guys!

What a hoot!

I've sent a PM to Gluecifer... And was also curious what $150 amounts to in today's dollars and found this fun little tool: inflation calculator

Looks like $150 in 1979 dollars equals roughly $423 2007 dollars. Again, thanks internet.

And I seem to have caught Jens's attention quickly with this one as he already sent me a PM with the model number and specs!

Its model # is GEN3999

Notable spec:
18w P/C
6000 mW power output (6 watts)
Freq Resp: 60-14000hz
Wow & Flutter: 0.2% RMS
35db FM stereo separation

It has an Aux In, and there was a remote available for starting & stopping tape travel during recording or playback.

All in all, not a bad little machine! And to think that I was so disrespectful of this bugger after I saw the Sharps and JVCs on the shelves in the audio stores!

I think my Dad sold this after I got the Sharp GF-9292. I'll have to ask him if he remembers whatever happened to this thing...
