Say Anything -1985 - Two different boomboxes?

gwizone - 2012-09-13 22:52

Hello there. I know what you are thinking..."Look at this newbie posting a question that has already been answered, TWICE no less!" But hear me out. In the 1985 film Say Anything we see John Cusacks' character hold up a boombox to play his sweetheart that tender song, "You're eyes" by Peter Gabriel. I am going to ask it again..."What kind of boombox was he holding..."

Now hold on!

Now I've read both threads already. The Toshiba rt-sx1 in silver has been identified in this image:

This is the official press image used for posters and promotion of the film upon it's release.

However, After watching the film again, and then googling for stills, I discovered this is *NOT* The actual boombox used in the scene. Here is a cropped version of the scene in question:

That looks NOTHING like the Toshiba in the first pic.

  1. There is no tuning knob on the front panel (an EQ is present in the film).
  2. The tweeter grilles are totally different
  3. the tuner is lighter/white, whereas the promo shot it's dark/grey.

Conclusion: It is a totally different make/model boombox!

Again, this is from the actual film. So my question to the forums is, "What type of boombox is shown in the actual film, not the publicity still?" Can anyone help me shed light on this?

I am a collector of old boomboxes and own 4 so far, A panasonic SG-J500, A Sanyo M9923, A Magnavox d8443, and a non-working Sanyo m9880ka. I also love 80's music/Hip-Hop/Graffiti and Movies.

Hope someone can help out! Thanks!

Good catch!

I notice it every time I see the movie, just figured that the promotional pictures were done after the movie was shot and they couldn't find the radio at that point. The Sharp used in the movie looks like a nicer box for sure.
