In S18E03 (2006) the Simpsons visit the run-down Springfield Mall. Close to the Dukakis Campaign Headquarters, and together with 1987 calendars & yesterday's puppies, they find the following:

cd box in 87???
samovar - 2012-11-01 15:42
i know. the simpsons visit the mall in 2006, so the box does not necessarily date back to '87. on the other hand, the design suggests a non-cd type. we gotcha, matt groening...

At the beginning of S18E08 (2006), the eight episode of the same series, Bart and Lisa eavesdrop on their parents' bedroom only to hear them fight. "He, he! Recording that fake fight was a great idea", says Homer to Marge while kissing her. We find then that the family boombox is not the one we saw at the Springfield Mall.
Low budget, as expected. And no cd

While Homer and Marge are wildly undressing, the heel of one of Marge's shoes hits the auto-reverse mechanism of the box. All at once, instead of the mock fight, Barth and Lisa listen to the best-known hit of America's:
Curious, the kids open the door and...
(...crossfade)

S18E13, 13nt episode of the 2006 series, features a flashback on Marge's past before she marries Homer. While she's working as a photographer, Marge turns on her minibox, only to discover that his customer has a gift for dancing at her music. "And the world welcomed Disco Stu", sais the voice-over.
Since the Simpsons's début dates to 1989, when Marge and Homer have already all three kids, we must conclude that this episode takes place in the second half, if not at the end, of the Seventies. But look at the box: is it compatible with this reconstruction, or are we in front of another example of anachronism?

Perhaps the most controversial episode featuring Homer and a boombox in the 2006 series is S18E19. Here Homer volunteers in the Springfield fire brigade only to steal from the people whom he is supposed to help. When he and his fellow firemen estinguish the fire at Costington's, he takes for himself the stereo equipment ("and some of the stuff I wanted", he says unashamed).
So, together with printers, fax, DVD players and SORNY tape decks, he bags the second JVC-PC 550-like box of the 18th series. Or is it a Panasonic RX-F32LS?
