I will apologize for my ignorance in advance but I have lurked for an hour and can't find a clear answer to this.
I bought a Vela Disco Lite about 5 or 6 years ago on ebay and have had it lying around since then. It's actually in storage at the moment. Difficult financial straight have me selling a few things off and I just remembered I had it.
I definitely need to maximize how much I get for it and I was trying to see how much it might go for and the best place to list it.
It's in really good condition and all 4 woofer lights work along with the little lights around the frame.
The left tape deck doesnt work and it's missing the battery door but that's it. I live in Boston and am willing to ship to anywhere in the world if need be.
Where do you think I should list it and how much should I ask for it?
If anyone wants to email me directly I can be reached at m.mistaker (at) gmail.com
Thanks for your help and sorry if this is a stupid question

please check out
this thread about prices and value!
as to where to list -- ebay might be the 1st and apparently only adress you'll get success (apart from the selling-section of this forum or boomboyery.com) and craiglist (if you are located in the USA).
best regards and good luck selling this gem!
I did actually read that one. And again I apologize for my ignorance.
It just seems like everything I've read here and elsewhere seems to indicate that this is an extremely rare one along with the fact that it's been affected by some pretty major external influence. I know when the Madonna video came out the price skyrocketed and I wasn't sure if it still held that inflated status. For the record I bought it for $30 at the time.
I work as a DJ and I know when some big tune comes out sampling a random funk or disco track the original will go for ridiculous money to people who don't know there were sitting in the dollar bin the month before.
I guess I was more just wondering the state of this in the market and where most of the rare ones change hands (for records I avoid ebay like the plague)
Thanks for your patience and advice with this
Oh and to not be completely useless I ran into a director friend in New York today and asked him who to talk to if I wanted to sell or rent it to a props/movie house.
He recommended Steiner Studios and Silverpop both out of NYC. He said he's been making cash renting an Eames Chair to shoots for a while now.
Maybe it's been covered before but it might be worth looking into as a way of keeping your collection and still getting a return on it.

Looks like you have some good connections there.
I would try renting it first,
see how that goes.
Thanks for your all your help and interest with this. I wanted to reiterate my responses to some emails/pm's in case it helps
-I live in Boston but will ship to wherever. It seems like international shipping is prohibitive but I will only charge the actually shipping cost (Handling seems like total bull**** if you ask me) Though I will strongly recommend insurance and will send pictures of it being packed as I cant assume liability for damage in transit.
-I wont make or accept any offers until I get the boombox out of storage this weekend or next and have taken tons of pics/video. Let me know if there's any element in particular that would help when it comes to evaluating it.
-I want to be straight that I am no expert in this field. I reached out to this and boomboxery so I could have some trained eyes making sure Im not inadvertently over/undervalueing this. Regardless of our interests we all have that holy grail we've been searching for and I would much rather this go to someone that appreciates it as long as I dont take a huge cut in the process.
-I will be listing this one ebay though Im not opposed to making it a private one. I just find the escrow element of paypal/ebay gives everyone recourse in case of the unexpected.
-I am not now nor do I plan or scamming anyone. In fairness I bought this on ebay for $30 in 2002 because I thought it looked cool and I was drunk one night. This isn't my thing and I just want to be able to get what it's worth without misrepresenting anything.
If you have the time the remaining questions I have are:
-How much do you guess this might go for in it's present condition? Has the whole Madonna factor worn off? Is this even a sought after piece or more of a novelty.
-What would be the upside of sourcing the extra parts and returning it to perfect condition? I would have no problem fixing it mechanically but would much rather just get rid of it as is. Though if it would double the value I might put in the work.
Sorry for all the questions I just like to do a lot of research before I buy or sell anything.
Thanks
-m

Maybe leaving it as-is is better
as there are many will know how to clean and fix it themself.
There are no original parts available for this.
there are no parts and no 'parts boxes' for sale-
mmmmmmmmmm!

i wouldnt hold out any hope on selling it on here for top dollar.
if you want the most youre going to have to go the ebay route.

Take your time and clean it up, get it working good.
Than put it on ebay.

Maybe I should get drunk more often.
Sorry for the wait on this, I finally got the photos.
Overall the Vela is in great shape. It has all switches and knobs along with a complete antenna. The whole case is relatively scratch free except for one spot I will get to below. All lights are working and both side seem to produce the same volume. It's actually really loud. I was using the RCA aux input on the back to play my ipod and it sounded great.
It runs both on batteries and the ac adapter and the radio gets clear reception on AM/FM channels.
The full photoset is
here with some extra views and higher res images if you want to check it out
Im not sure how to embed flicker videos so you can check out the videos of it working
here and
here Here's a few shots.
There is a small chip on the top
Tape deck one doesn't move. Tape deck 2 works but it has come off it's hinges. It stays in place but doesn't eject properly.
The battery door is missing though it might not matter if you use AC power.
I'd be glad to take any more photos/video if there's something I may have missed.
I've gotten a lot of emails about this and I really appreciate your advice/interest. As I said Im going to post this on ebay tonight or tomorrow and I'll post the link when it's up.
Everything will be in the description but to answer a some questions I've gotten a few times.
- Local pickup is fine (I live in Boston and am in NYC a lot) though payment must go through paypal or be in cash at the time of pick up. We all hate scams and I just want to avoid misunderstandings later.
- I would definitely prefer this to go to a collector who will appreciate it but the reason Im selling it in the first place is to raise some money after having 3 laptops stolen in the last 2 months. It's not really clear what it's worth and I think it's more fair to everyone to list it on ebay.
Thanks for all your advice with this. Ill post the auction url when I have it up.
Finally have it listed on ebay. Sorry for the wait. You can check it out
