I was browsing ebay for a Panasonic RX-C100 because I was looking for a box with a lot of bass in it. I'm also fond of the J-1 as well so I searched for the Super Jumbo just to see what comes up and I ran across this.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item...=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016I'm seriously thinking about bidding on it but at the same time, I think I might need to hold off and find a better one. With EQ sliders missing and a cassette button missing, I'm not sure about this one. What to you guys think? I know there are a lot of shady sellers on ebay these days and some of you mentioned sellers whom you should avoid. Therefore, I do have some skepticism, although I've bought many electronic items on ebay before (never boomboxes though). Have you guys heard of ebay seller "redding1"? If so, what do you think about him? Although this J-1 is not mint, it still looks pretty darn good. Since you're all pretty knowledgable about boomboxes as experience collectors, do you think it would be a good idea to bid or pass on this J-1? Furthermore, what do you think this box is "realistically" worth?
Another question would be how would it compare to the Panasonic RX-C100 in terms of bass? The main thing that attracts me to the Super Jumbo is really the look, plus the fact I saw it in "Do the Right Thing." Beautiful box, but if the RX-C100 actually sounds better, then I'll just leave the Super Jumbo alone for now and maybe get one later on if I still desire it.
Any second opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks to all that respond.
Not knocking the J1 but if it's overall sound with great bass you will not beat the RX-C100 with a J1. Remember those J1 speakers are mounted in the case with everything else vs. the Panasonic.
the panasonic is a three piece boombox kv, therefore the speakers are in their own seperate sealed (or ported) enclosures, which leads to better sound than in a one piece, where the speakers are just banged into a big plastic box with everything else.
1 piecers tend to be the boxes we think of when we think ghetto blaster though, and in general are much bigger than 3 piecers. three really big three piecers are the fisher ph series, the ph 480, 490 and 492, which are about the same size as that j1. the j1 is a monster boombox. asking what a box is worth is a bit taboo on here, but i would say for that one your lookin at about 350-400 on up. its hard to call, its gotten a lot of exposure now, because theres another thread about it in this section too.
Redding 1 is a reputable seller.

Everyone is right about the sound quality, if that's what your after then get the RX-C100. The bonus here is that you should be able to pick up a good RX-C100 at half the price or less of a good J-1.
J-1's typically command a pretty large price tag.
Thanks everyone. I think I'll just stick with the RX-C100 for now. I kinda figured those J-1s commanded big money, expecially since they're well known. The good thing about the RX-C100 is the fact that it's an excellent quality box that hasn't reach a lot of popularity/fame which keeps the price to sensible levels and not the silly money the more popular ones go for. $700-$1000 for a Sharp GF1000, or 777 or whatever, plleeaasseee!!!!! They're nice looking boxes though.
Oh, and I've been looking for a Modulaire 2200 in better shape to replace/complement my old 2200 and found a 2250. I'm getting this as well as long as the bid price doesn't become too out of hand. I probably wouldn't pay more than $120 for it since they only costed over $200 new. My 2200 was around $200 new.
I've never really thought about the 3 piece versus 1 piece matter in terms of speakers but that's an excellent point!!! A 3 piece with each woofer in it's own casing is definitely a better idea. Kinda like car audio where the subwoofer box is built to specs to maximize the quality of the bass. So yeah, I suppose the J-1 wouldn't sound nearly as good as a 3 piece such as a RX-C100.
Thanks for the insight.
that doesnt go to say all three piecers are quality kv, a lot of thekm are junk. if you hang around for a while youll pick up different peoples opinions of boxes.
that is the best way to learn about them, read for a few weeks. i can imagine your impatient to get started though, looking at all the candy. i was too, and blew 500 on a crap box! aaaggh, years later and i still cant let it go....
<< it was actually a variant of the box in my avatar. looks fantastic, sounds like ****
Yeah, I agree many of them are junk (I've heard some too back in the day). That's why I'm only going with the best recommendations from members here and reading up on threads on this highly informative forum. 2200 however, has a sentimental value. That's why I'm persuing it.
Oh, and I've just read on another thread about another J-1 ebay auction and found out the build quality of the J-1 is crappy and it's extremely vulnerable to damage during shipping. One jolt during transit and the transformer breaks off. So, I'm veering away from the J-1 altogether.
kv check your personal messages, go to the top of the page, and click where it says new pm
da
They don't ALL break off, just the ones that are poorly packed and roughly handled.

Thanks NED 209, I just responded.

In the other thread, I've read the J-1 can still break even with good packaging.
let me find the link.

If I were you, I'd take that opinion with a grain of salt... The last J-1 that sold on eBay a few weeks ago arrived from Canada to the U.S. in excellent shape.

Wow, that's good to hear!!!! Because the thread I was reading was about that auction and regarding that particular seller.
It was this thread:
http://stereo2go.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7966054064/m/51...191016615#5191016615I'm glad the outcome was good. So I guess double packaging and bubble wrap is extremely important in this case. Oh yeah, and insurance.
Yeah, "the outcome was good"...
the j1 is a decent box these things werent made to go on a world wide tour in a card board box alot of other better radios get busted up too ,the j1 is just hard to ship becuase of its size ,but it is brutally loud and sounds awesome
Yeah. I've watched some Youtube videos of it and even through the crappy camcorder microphone, I can tell the J-1 can get pretty loud and sound good. Yeah I know, Youtube videos don't do justice to actually hearing it in person but that's the closest I can get to one for now. It has bass too because the music that was playing were old-school hip/hop bass songs and camcorder mic even picked up the bass response surprisingly. The bass might not sound as good as the Panasonic RX-C100 but the J-1 does bump. And it looks really awesome!!! I still would like to hear one in person though.

I hate to get onto this again, but can someone please explain to me why anyone would bid on an item more than a minute before the auction closes. I've always thought that one of ebay's few redeeming qualities was the fact that auctions don't auto-extend when somebody snipes. The fact that this bidding war is going on days before the auction's close (as often occurs) seems very silly to me, but maybe I'm just naive.
exactly. your there to win. Not to take part.
placing an early bid just raises the stakes for everybody including you.
At $172.50 with 2d 20h 16m to go, I can definitely see this J-1 surpassing the $300.00 mark by the end of this auction.
Awesome, very cool box. IMO this seller, redding1 (Jeff), is very consistent with his auctions, simple, direct, great shots and always has clean gear. I bought a Fosgate Audionics surround processor from him last year. Well packed, great communication. I'd buy this box just for the look.
this box is just immensly huge ,the only one piece box thats bigger is the helix wheely/elta masterblaster ,it's bigger than the c100 ,

Which is ridiculous considering that they are pretty much junk by comparison.
I know that there is the whole 3 pc not being a "real" boombox, but c'mon, that J-1 just screams......
C-H-E-A-P-O-B-L-A-S-T-E-R
But it is pretty cool looking, much more ghetto whereas the RX-C100 is elegance all the way.
You must've been the kid who got his box blown out the frame every time a battle jumped off...
To each his own...

PF I totally agree with you.
The RX-C100 should sell for more.
J-1 = Flashy classic Blaster but cheap build quality.
RX-C100 = Elegant & Classy (not classic) Blaster with great sound and quality.

You obviously never heard an RX-C100 cranked.....
J-1's and the like served a purpose. They were big, made a lot of noise, and most of all..... cheap.
The RX-C100 is built like a tank, exudes quality, and has it where it counts.
The J-1 is loud, obnoxious and cheap.
They are just completely different animals.

PF I hope that wasn't directed at me since I totally agreed with you in my last post.

Sorry, forgot to quote the person I was replying to.
Fixed!
Panafan, I agree with you. I'm a three piece fan and a fan on Matshusita elctronic products as well. That aside cheap is cheap. I noted in another forum about a Sharp I own, like very much, but have to admit, and accept, that certain manufacturers just got spanked when it came to build quality compared to the RX-C100, Pioneer CK-5F and the like. As far as one piecers the J1 is nothing compared to an M90 relating to parts and build quality.

You're not naive; you're smart.
The only thing that happens when there's a bidding war in the middle of an auction is the final price goes up. It has nothing to do with who wins the auction. Good for the seller; bad for the buyer. (That's why sellers often tell bidders, "Don't wait; get your bids in early.")
So... snipe! Get an accurate watch (preferably one that sets itself to the National Institute of Standards time in Colorado, which is what eBay uses)(or listen to WWV on shortwave), know exactly how long it takes for your computer to send a bid (longer on dial-up, shorter on hi-speed), have your bid ready to submit (enter your amount, sign in, etc.), and hit "confirm bid" a few seconds before the auction ends. Simple.
Just be sure to bid the most you can afford with your one bid. Unless the seller does something screwy, like end the auction early, it turns every auction into a one-shot deal. And your odds of winning go way up!
