Toshiba Bombeat WX-1 S983 BIN

I'm sorry for the ongoing debate, which I read earlier, regarding hiked prices and resources driving up the price of boomboxes. My opinion is: Your final purchase price depends on the time of year not necessarily the amount of resources used to advertise a boombox. Everyone who is looking for that particular model, will find it through notifications if they are resourceful enough. If you want an M90 for less than $500.00 this late in the popularity game you must ebay it between thanksgiving and christmas-not in march-after tax refund time.
Further more, if a sight such as this or any other similar sight, whether boomboxes or vintage tape deck, stereos, etc. If they have this "For Sale" catagory on their site then they must want that resource available for themselves and their members. If they didn't want others to find these resources then the moderators would simply remove the "for sale" catagory. It's a resource that is not abused. Most of us oldschoolers want others to buy these boomboxes up to fix them and preserve the culture.
We all know from experience that sometimes you loose money when you put heart into a project-to save a boombox. And other times you are hopeful to get some money back out of it. I have had a lot of boomboxes at the b boy boutique shop over the past 12 years and a lot more growing up in the 70's and 80's, nobody will ever become rich peddling vintage boomboxes trust me.
Sorry. On that note here is an auction I would like to offer to those who i.m'd me for this toshiba bombeat wx-1 s983. to keep it fair I added a buy it now. If it sells it sells, if not, no biggie. I at least want to offer it where it's fair for everyone. Good luck

Good to know James. thanks. There were more than a couple people looking for this unit. My auction will end on Thursday it would be good to wait to see what happens to that auction before posting. Your boombox looks great. I have never cleaned mine but i'm sure if I were to spend a couple hours cleaning-it would bring out the luster. It is among a few boomboxes that are aesthetically and cosmetically appealing as well as functionally.
Good day, thx

Had one of these and they're not worth that kind of money in my opinion. Good luck.

im with docs....i had one also......they look incredible but im not impressed with the output

I aggree these are NOT a Loud Boombox but for Bass Music at a pleasing or pleasent level these are a Excellent sounding box - Just dont expect it to be a Boomer or loud in the traditional boombox sense of being Loud - probally attributed to choice of speaker design provided - However if this is used with Different Speaker's that are Sounding better to your ear's - Then this will have plenty of Power like top of the line boombox's to make "your" external speakers sound as well as they could being powered by a portable and or like 'other' boombox's that you have used with "Your" external speakers.
There is another Collector that has said the same as i have said above - basically get this unit and ( Do Not use the Speakers ) that comes with it - use the speakers you like, for Terrific sound.

I agree on the output level, it may not be as aggressive as the m90 or a conion. It is however very well designed with quality, clean sound & recording in mind. The emphasis on this wx-1 design was for the intensions of making quality cassette recordings not for power. It's easy for someone to overlook the emphasis on a design when all they are interested in is the loudness aspect of a machine. Popularity? Functionality?
The quality put into the Bombeat WX-1 was everything Toshiba had in tape deck technology at that time. Toshiba stepped up to the plate with this one. Marantz also had the high quality boomboxes with an emphasis on studio quality cassette recording capabilities rather than loud power.
The difference is high quality cassette recorder on a portable which has strong tolorent switches, pots and sliders with no loose, jiggly fragile parts. These components were designed well with tolorence and tightniess, unlike other boomboxes that came out in the mid to late 80's.
There is a class of boomboxes that were designed to work as a "studio quality stereo cassette recorder" for home or on the go. These designs were not meant to be loud and distorted, rather full and clean with low distortion. The National RX 7000 is a good example of this. Most of these companies such as National/Pani, Sanyo, Sharp, Marantz, Aiwa etc would design a series of boomboxes that started with the highest end of radio & stereo transistor technology and recording technology. At the other end of these series of designs they would have the affordable, economical boombox. They would design the
first couple models with expensive components. From there on down the line in the series it would get cheaper and more economical. They would have less features from one to the other as the model number dropped. The "Toshiba Bombeat Wx-1 S983" is a good example of this. The JVC "M" series, as well as the national/Pani RX series, and the Sharp GF's.
Conion for example was Big, Loud and Portable, that's what their emphasize in design was (Lets take our home stereo to the beach and throw our loud ass music down everybody's throaght!!! great idea btw.). If you wanted your loud ass home stereo in middle of the beach you would go out and buy a conion C-100f. If you wanted quality recording at home or on the go playbacks you would buy a National Rx 7000. If you want to record and rerecord or dub & duplicate cassettes at high quality you would buy a Toshiba WX-1. Each company had there technilogical niche and their boombox would be designed around that special component. A lot of people build houses around kitchens.
Your opinion helps keep the world flavorful, it's appreciated. This shouldn't, however, discourage someone who may have a dream or vision of what they want just because one person doesn't like something. In my opinion i personally don't like most mid 1980's black boomboxes because it was at an era of cheaper plastics, cheaper parts, loose knobs, cheaper components that served more as an on the go function rather than quality. But that is only my experience and my opinion. I don't go around discouraging dreams. If I were to overlook a boombox and it's main features I would not be able to properly judge what it's worth. It just means that I would pay more money for a different boombox that does have the features I need. Hahaha-opinions? & suggestive Judgements?
Lets consider the fact that these boomboxes were from an era of technology when in 1982 nobody knew what was next-(It was the same with music at that time). These boomboxes and most vintage electronics are here because they survived. When I offer this boombox i'm not offering it to make a shit'ton of money. I offer it because this boombox survived. There is always that one person out there who wanted this boombox back in the day but couldn't afford it. If you grew up breakdancing in the early 80's like I did but couldn't afford a good boombox you would have to serve suckers in the battle to get respect. If you showed up to a battle with a Montgomery ward boombox (like a frickin' Yorx or Emerson) you better be able to battle. A lot of poeple would say; one day I'm gonna show up to a battle with a sick sharp boombox and crush these bitches!!!!. Who wants to show up to a battle with a fricken Yorx to battle a crew that's blastin' "Renegades Of Funk" out of a Sharp Gf 777, Clairtone or Conion C-100f ???? That's when you chose which boombox you wanted. Everyone has there inspiration for something and they will pay a fair price for it.
There is someone out there who would, at the time this Toshiba was released, take an MTA bus down to Hudson's, JR Music, Highland appliance, Best or any other retailer to look at these boomboxes. Iwould go every week to look and listen. I would mixtape in the display model and bump it just loud enough so I wouldn't get kicked out.
For "docs" I would recommend something more along the lines of Lasonic, Clairtone, Helix, Conion, JVC Victor, or Panisonic RX 6400, where you will get the loud power rather than portable recording & sound quality. Hopefully you will be satisfied with a more perfect configuration that suits you at a price you can afford.
Haha... Also remind me the next time you are trying to raise money for something by selling boomboxes from your collection so I can discourage potential buyers. I will be sure to over look the emphasis of a design and put a price on it. This is like going out to the spot with your friends and being cockblocked by your boy Hahaha. Thanks for your opinion.

Sure, thx. I think it's a great boombox and hopefully someone out there will enjoy it for another 30 years.

Had one of these and they're not worth that kind of money in my opinion. Good luck.
Same here, great build quality and very heavy, but the output is not very impressive. It sounds great at lower levels although.

This is getting good. I really must confess to an astonishing lack of interest. It is hard to understand how one who follows another person's views, probably on a regular basis, dunno for sure, would overlook the point. I may be able to help, let me put it in a simple window for you. I paid 375.00 for the boombox years ago. Fair price, right? Ok, I received the box and of course, as it happens a lot on ebay, the item was "misrepresented". This is simple...I put $250 into it to bring it up to par.....$350.00 + $250.00 = $600.00. If you don't like my auction or don't know me, you will be better off cuttin' your own grass.
Now for the guy, I don't care what your name is, but the follower....If you couldn't handle my earlier opinion....perhaps the numbers above may help.
If you want to be a who's who? forum follower "boombox sofisto", that's fine. But this price is without profit. It's dishonest sellers who lie about their auctions who drive the prices up-are you one of them? I simply paid too much but feel really satisfied that I saved another great ghettoblaster.
What does this collecting thing mean to you? Is it a way to gain social status? Do you always knock shit over when you walk into a room? You have to be the last person I would ever come to for advice regarding anything to do with a boombox. It is what it is. Don't buy it if you don't like the numbers. It's a true story either way. get some heart n balls

gee i have bought soooooo many misrepresented box's to the point that I have so many - cause I thought that then next one I bought from the next seller wouldn't be LYING!!! - well it has Taken me a long time to understand that they all lie...except for the extremely rare few... Meanwhile some have been repaired and the other's simply cause i dont have the extra $$ to do so with anymore as life goes onward an so i have these "rare" one's that just need a little TLC - and I paid a pretty penny for them - where have you been all my life ? and now that I am beyound - broke - an or -poor and so therefore all or more are going out of here- yeah conufsing - all have been for sale since 23 August 2010 ...

Reno - here let me point out a leetle difference in the sales department "they" rely upon staitionary pictures and text.... I Rely Upon - (1) front picture and then Video's of its sides & looks and such and the other video as I am making them is with sound and MY Voice Describing almost what is pertinent or needed for the box to play as it IS Playing as You can SEE it ACTUALLY working as these are the one's we have selected to sell !!

...on that note, if any collector or member is ever in the Detroit or Flint area pm me. I can show you the real deal in town. It's best to come to the "D" around the "Detroit Electronic Music Festival" time. Or "The Movement" as it is now called. This is a good eventfull time usually in mid May. There are a lot good record stores, dj spots, good food, event's pawn shops & thrift stores year 'round. And Flint.....well, we'll keep you out of that war zone. Hit me up.

Flint, MI is located at the eastside of the intersections of I-75 & I-69. This is 50 miles or so north of Detroit-it is also the current nations worse crime rate per capita' http://www.streetdigest.com/20...ties-in-the-country/ (has been top ten every year in the past 30 years). It's probably still not as bad as South London hehe. I heard the term "Brixton Briefcase" (another word for ghetto blaster???)
Regardless Detroit in May would be a good time to plan an event. Nobody fu"ks with you if you stey near public events. The Movement is over staffed with police and security and all the hotels are near the "Hart Plaza where all the fun is. It is gated and a blast with people from around the globe visitiing the festival. There are after parties at all the surrounding clubs with dj's from all over the world spinning. It would be good to take some boomboxes and rent several rooms for the The Movement gig May 2012.
