I got a nice and rare vintage tape, but the high end fades in and out reasonably noticibly, it plays the same on the half a dozen different decks I've played it on.

Is the information still on the tape? As in could I adjust the head positing on a deck and dub it to another tape? Or is that part of the information degraded and unrestorable?

Just thought I'd ask as you're all much more learned on the subject than I.

I just had the same problem with a pre-recorded tape I found in the thrift store.
Recorded in 1973.
Also it did not have dolby.
The problem was with the tape head pressure pad.
It did not use a spring-pad, just a pad
and the pad was no good.
had to replace it but im still trying to find a good repalcement
as its a bit critical, the amount of pressure.
But the cassette sounds great still.

Sounds like the tape was partially damaged from a magnet. The side closest to the magnet took the most damage while the far side(being further away from the magnet) took the least. The result is your highs fading in an out in a cyclic manner when the tape is played.

Well, much to my disappointment Prime's theory is correct. I replaced the pad and the fading highs are still are noticible.

Real shame.. was one of my most prized finds.
