brutus442 - 2012-03-27 16:53
You'd should follow that purchase up with a Beta video player...it's going to be the next big thing CB!
transwave5000 - 2012-03-27 16:58
Beta is already a big thing.
claret.badger - 2012-03-27 17:18
it's true
have you seen the price of Beta machines in working condtion?

I'm off to buy some Elcaset and V2000 tapes
chris69 - 2012-03-27 18:23
I've sold quite a few vintage Hi-Fi Beta Machines over the years for decent $$
brutus442 - 2012-03-27 18:29
I'm joking actually. I know Beta's an industry standard. My brother is in the film business and Beatcam is pretty much an industry standard..but he say it's fading fast with newer cheaper HD cameras on the market. That said TV production still uses the Betamax machines
He even uses Canon/ Nikon HD DSLR for filming. Digital format's the way of the future he says because of the elimination of the post production editing req'd. Which saves the studios BIG $$
It can now be done right after the scene's shot, in the field..... No more "cutting room floor"
scottym - 2012-03-27 19:26
One of these (Aurex PC-X88AD) which is toshiba went for 99 cents on the bay the other day i was half tempted...but A, i don't know what they sound like and B, there was no free postage!
ghettoman - 2012-03-27 19:39
Badger, that deck is beautiful man,go get some dats and use it,bet it sounds nice..
Scotty,i love that deck too,you get some really nice decks..
ghettoman - 2012-03-27 19:42
oh yes i just remembered,i used to mess with Beta video's,have tou tried to repair one ? nightmare, some beta decks were known as charlie decks because they used to have one guide/take up spool which did a full wrap around the play head forming the letter C.they did that for better picture quality, anyhow, they were a nightmare lol..
claret.badger - 2012-03-29 05:06
anybody got any blank dat tapes?
or can anyone recomend me somewhere to buy them?
Just bought a Nakmichi CR3E as well
I'm trying to thin down my collection FFS!
retrodos - 2012-03-30 00:05
I fix a few of those beta decks, they do fetch some good money as it hard to find them in working condition. But picture quailty is much beter then VHS.
mark - 2012-03-31 19:23
why not? i did the same thing. saw a dtc-1000es on ebay for 99 cents, in canada so the shipping was only 32 bucks. thought, why not? hopefully yours works better than mine does, but it makes a nice addition to the rest of my '87 es pieces.
claret.badger - 2012-04-01 05:02
wish mine cost 99 cents
i think i overpaid
but it's an object d'art - need to find the wooden cheeks for it
mark - 2012-04-02 18:45
i was lucky that it came with the fake wood chonks. but it has the dried up sony grease syndrome, so, it's currently only an objet d'arte. but i did download the service manual. and um, i hope to tackle the intimidating task of dismantling and relubing, someday.
you could try making your own wood chonks.
claret.badger - 2012-04-03 02:34
tis an idea yes
I just got another one! it was in an auction of studio gear - - much cheaper

Hi Mark, there are some rather nice tutorials over on the Audio Karma forum which may be of assistance (may not be the same model but often some repairs are common to more than one deck) Sony Dat Service link: http://www.audiokarma.org/foru...wthread.php?t=184212
19lexicon78 - 2012-04-13 16:13

used it once, its far better than cassette. but those DAT tapes are far to $$$.

Hi Claret, check this out for dome info about potential El Cheapo blank DATS http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=400801
claret.badger - 2012-04-15 03:23
thanks Nak D
When I got my second DAT machine it came with 30 tapes!
And I bought a pack of 10 tapes on the bay - so I am fully loaded for blanks
DAT is outstanding!
I recomend everyone get a machine whilst the prices of decent ES or PRO Sony decks is under 100 quid
this WILL not last
nak.d - 2012-04-15 16:41
I scored a Tascam DA 20 MK II 3 years ago for £25, superb condition with the R/C + manual. I also managed to get a box of 10 sealed Maxell DM120 DAT Tapes for £8.99 incl P+P! Tapes were from eBay, the DAT deck was from a private sale from a local musician emigrating to Australia. I hooked up with him by buying a Denon cass deck off ebay... for £1. Bargains are out there. Fully working DD9 for £25.50 incl P+P anyone? You could be right. When folks realise just how good these things can sound and with a bit of TLC how long they can last the price will go upwards. Always liked the look of the Sony ES range. Although Tascam and Fostex etc are built to a different standard, more prosumer than consumer. If you don't mind Claret, how many £££ did your recent DAT aquisitions run you?
claret.badger - 2012-04-15 16:53
well I overpaid for the first one - i know that now
the second one (same model) works out to have cost me less than a tenner - maybe even free
So around 40-50 each
nak.d - 2012-04-15 16:58
A Tenner? Great stuff! Do you have all the manuals? If not I will try to help... no promises but will try for you. This is quailty Hi-Fi for pennies really. Don't forget decent leads, although no need to spend a fortune!
claret.badger - 2012-04-15 17:36
Thanks for the help!
I got a scanned copy of the manual
(and an original Japanese copy)
The second DAT machine happens to be 110v - which is great coz I'm moving to the USA!)
I'm using optical cables to my amp - they cam with the deck!
