Goldstar CRX 90 Type II tapes

plop - 2013-04-05 05:47

Saw these on ebay and also on Gumtree a while ago. Decided to take the plunge.

Look surprising like 80s TDK SA90 tapes

Cheapest for two

Well I've given one of these a go.

Build quality wise, I wouldn't say that the shells are quite up to the standard of TDKs that they are trying to imitate from back in the 80s. Otherwise, the cassette shells are reasonably rigid for plastic. The cassette case is a bit sharp over a couple of corners, and the plastic feels somewhat flexible on the lid of the case. On the example I have opened however there is an annoying squeal as the cassette plays through, although not all the time!

On to the tape itself. There were a couple of drop outs at the beginning of the tape, but overall none throughout the rest of it. Sound wise, the tape biases and levels very well. Flipping between source and tape, the recording sounds ever so slightly brighter than the original. Probably more noticeable on less compressed tracks.

Overall and with all things considered given the price asked for a NOS tape at this price point of £1.25 per Type II C-90 cassette, it is not a bad tape at all. Definitely worth a look in, even if you have to buy two to try it out. It's no TDK SA, by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd certainly rate it as above average for audio performance versus cost. Given the lack of any other source of Type II NOS tape out there, it is a no-brainer to stock up on some of this if it works out for your set-up.

I've been buying these but haven't recorded anything yet. Are they from from the 80's? I read on a cassette reference site they were made between 86-88.

How many have you bought? I have acquired a couple dozen to keep me going since there aren't any Type II cassettes now in production.

There aren't any date markings on the cassette, but as some others have said, it does seem probable that this is an 80s tape.

Looks like the deal just got sweeter... now they're only £1 a cassette! Bargain for a NOS above average performing Type II.
