I'm now on the prowl for a box to use around town. Lately, I've been hauling my grandmother's old Magnavox everywhere, dancing in the streets and giggling hysterically. Since I know my investment would be worthy, I'm on the lookout for a more vintage box. I'm open to anything from around 1980 to the solid malaise era, but I'd like the following: line in, working cassette (essential,) at least a few watts a channel, light weight/small box, sturdy build, 2-way speakers. If it's a later box, bright/girly color and very compact size is important, but I know the older boxes are a bit porkier. Good battery life is a major plus. Bass is unimportant, and general fidelity is secondary. New belts are a huuuge plus - don't need my deck to start warbling and make me look a fool on Main St!

Obviously I can't have all those features in the same box, so most important is that it can be carried a few miles in a day, get at least like six hours on a set of batteries, and actually work real well. I don't want anything really high-end or coveted. In fact, the less valuable, the better - this WILL get used every few days.

I won't say my spending limit concretely, but I don't think I can be swayed to crack $100 with shipping.

Oh, and the D8300 might be my dream box. Any available in good shape, with strap?

To say more, 'course I know about Ebay. I just don't trust it with something so heavy and fragile. I bought a D-8300, and it came with a rotted belt and a cracked circuit. So much for, "works as new." Oh, and I live in Massachusetts.

go for a philips d8614 very what your after and you should pick 1 up for around 80/100 dollars, it,s a perfect street machine made in 82, not too heavy great sound, twin green led,s line in and so on, looks cool too

Well, unfortunately, it's a bit too big, and looks a bit too much like a three-piece stereo. 2 or 3 watts and four inch woofers are fine by me, while 6.5 or eight and 10 or fifteen watts is just too much heft and battery drain. But, thanks for a reasonable price on a box many would enjoy...
