Hi fellas,
I am looking for an SCR-8 to replace one that I had in high school but was stolen a year or two after I got it. I remember drooling over the Radio Shack ad. I carried the ad to school every day and read it constantly. I remember even drawing the front panel to scale on a piece of cardboard before I got it. Ah, the good 'ol days of yore when a kid actually had to wait and dream about a wanted item.
Gotta love the internet. I started thinking about this radio and searched Google, not knowing the model number. Went to Image search, and voila! There it was! I can't believe the great condition of some of the old radios on this site. Kudos to the collector.
Anyway, if anyone wants to part with theirs, give me a buzz.
Regards, Randy
hi randy --welcome to s2g -
please check your PM
Thanks for the info. Leads were followed, and the beat-up one on Ebay was purchased.
Tape deck not working should not be hard to fix.
Missing antennae - ditto.
But -- it is missing the metal sticker surrounding the 24 LED VU meters. Is this a part that could possibly be available anywhere?
If not, no biggie. I will simply keep my eyes open and trade up as better specimens show up.
Yeah!
thats cool --you got it for about 70% off !!!
the going rate
and - you might also want to follow up on this recent thread - as these 2 members may be making that trim piece you want--

The SCR-8 really is a great box...i think it has the best tuner ever...it can pull in stations clearly...anywhere. I'm also anxious for the replacement strips

Hopefully the owner of that site will get a move on for those strips

Welcome Pelzr!! Congrats on your purchase - Gsbadbmr is right. This box has the best tuner in my whole collection. It pulls in stations from everywhere, it's alot of fun to just change radio stations back and forth
. It also records very well.
It just to my house! I can't believe this treasured radio from my past is now sitting on my table! Yeah!
The AUX in works nice for the ipod. So as is, I am good. And I am happy that the meters work and the speaker grills are pristine. However, I want to make it better.
Couple of things need attention:
-The pots have some noise. Are these reasonably cleanable/serviceable?
-This obviously belonged to a smoker and it smells gross. Suggestions on cleaning?
-The tape deck drives and capstans spin but the head does not engage. Belts appear intact.
Is there any kind of service manual available?
On second thought, these questions have probably been answered before so I'll do a search.
But it's here! Yeah!!
Congratulations, Peltzr!
I had my deck serviced and it turned out to be a design flaw that where the main spring attaches, (that lifts the heads up) gets broke due to pressure. You can deoxit your controls with a tuner type cleaner at radio shack for like $10. You can also use mild dish soap to clean bbx and orange glo for troubled stains

So I had another bid going on ebay. I got a *mint* condition SCR-8 for $27. And I mean this thing must not have worked out of the box and then have been put in storage for 25 years, because there is not a speck of dust on it. Not the faintest scuff on the tuner dial plastic, a perfect and tight antennae, the cassette screen is flawless, etc. Just perfect. I'll start a new thread on the "not working" part, but it seems like a simple fix.
regards, Randy
Boy, every other day there seems to be a new SCR-8 on Ebay. There is one restored one there now for $349. Yeah!

Yeah Man, the SCR-8 will be the next box I look for. I remember that box from the good old days too. I used to go down to the local Radio Shack and ask that guy to crank it up until he was sick of me!
