It rare to add a box to your collection without servicing the cassette deck. Always died or near died. Only one or two of my boxes weren't oppened at home.
Then, for boxes that has cassette deck problems, tires and belts solve most of the them. Finishing the service, I run the box for about 8 hours to see if the speed is stable.
In several cases I found that NOT. Speed changes alone, because the decks were heavily used and motors are likely to dead
So, the final touch is a new and fresh motor.
But no more GOOD motors aviable ...
It was common to find mabuchi motors in electronic stores, but at some point they started to sell fake ones.
The worst: they don't work, can't be adjusted properly and speed changes all the time.
I bougth three of them and They went to the trash.
The difference between the original and the fake are minor looking outside. But when you look inside, you realize that is a pice of crap
Of course I give up buying fake ones.
If some meber is interested I cant tell the difference between fakes and originals.
Looking at mabuchi's web page, this kind of motor is not avaiable any more. So it's true that if you get a new perhaps is a fake one.
With my last 3 boxes I've done miracles to keep they running ...
I found a store which still have some good quality motors, but only at 6VDC, so adding circutry was mandatory. But they started to sell the fake ones too. So no more motors.
I'm really worried, this piece is essential for the manteniance of any box.

Something else you may want to try is to fing a good used home tape deck. JVC and Technics (Panasonic/National) are pretty good bets when looking for common motors. This works well with other brands too. The benefit is that since most of them share common rails and frame assembly you get plenty of other spare parts as well.
Yeas, I tough that. But it cheaper to by some eggs
There are lots of crapy eggs that still have good motors and not heavily used because the main source in an egg is the CD rather than the deck.
Today I bought three tape mecha from an electronic store. This mecha are new but had some missing parts so they them very cheap (like crap).
The good news are they have fresh new motors that look original ones, and at the same price of the motor alone, you get lots of fixes, like heads pinch and tires that perhaps you can use in the future.
So, I could add three more boxes to my collection without worring.
Thanks for the advice, I'll PM him and see what can I do.

There are other proper companies still making the same equivalent type motors.
No need to worry for now.
I also found a odd motor "Made in India" made for cassette machines. They put there own company name on the motor so its not a "fake".
success i have used new mabuchi motors on older decks on bbx you have to buy the 2400 rpm motor that about the ones ive seen that work on most unless it uses a different one, some of the late 90 bbx used these newer generation motors.i have found that some of them are in fact made in china they have an emblem etched on the case that looked like a mabuchi motor unless i see mabuchi motors on the casing i will not use the chinese brand they never work right.....
But this fakes said mabuchi both in the label and case. That's the problem.
The diffences:
1) Mabuchi logo on case:
Poor definition of the logo and leters. Some letter aren't clear, aren't complete and size change from leter to leter.
2) Mabuchi label
Bad color code. As long as I used them, 9V are green, 12V red and 6 black. The fakes 9V are blue. Font size isn't the same.
3) Holes
Fakes have two holes !!!!!!!!! ... let me think about the other ... dual speed control ... eerrrrrr not.
4) Trying to use them ...
a)
I tried three of them. None of them could be adjusted. All of them resulted in fast playback, even at min speed setting.
b)
Speed regulation is nasty. Speed changes all the time, like you were playing with the speed setting.
The same boxes worked fine with original ones.5) Inside
Lets look inside ....
Rotor plastic cover is light brown instead of white.
Speed regulation circuit has SOME JUMPERED CONECTIONS, and some componentes like capacitors haven't their legs cut !!!! believe or not, When I openned one of them, one leg from a capacitor cross the entire motor cricuit board !!!!!!
Regulation IC, isn't from mitsumi, also one leg is soldered with a wire (it was cut in a wrong way and solved using a wire)
The three motor the same ... look like a hand finished units ... definitely not from mabuchi.

Could you take some leetle picture's of what you seen inside these motor's so we could see what you have seen in your description above? James
That's impossible now, because I dump the fakes into the bin. You can figure ... I was so angry.
The next time I go to the electronic store I'll buy one to take some photos, after that I'll dump it to the bin
