Aiwa CS880U belt size.

skippy1969 - 2008-03-20 08:32

Does anyone know the correct size of the flat main drive belt on the Aiwa CS880. I know that the Aiwa CS880,CS770 and CS660 all use the same belt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Big Grin

i havent had to change mine , but sure the deck assembly is the same as the 770 . . . cant guarantee tho

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-03-21 17:06

yup , backed up by the 880 master of england . .

same as 770 bro

skippy1969 - 2008-03-21 17:08

Yep,I have a parts CS770 mk1 that I got from Ash25,I used the main part of the cassette drive for the 880 because it was junk.So I rebuilt the whole cassette drive mechanism. That was a job,I'll tell you! Roll Eyes Laugh Out Loud But the belt on the 770 was gone and the 880's belt turned to tar. They are exactly the same. I might just have to check the belt on the 770mk2 I got from you if nobody can come up with a measurement for me. Wink

Please, some one help out. My Aiwa 770 is needing some belts im sure. The cassette is fuxked. Want to have it all ready for the repair man when i get it fixed. If i can walk into the spot with the belts in hand im sure to get the ball rolling. Please. I need ONE radio popping for the summer.

Skippy,
The flat belt I just bought for my 660 measures 10 and a half inches. I pinched it together, measured and then multiplied by two. It is 4mm wide.Big Grin

where do i score these belts?

so for the 770, which belt am i buying off that site Skippy? I see numbers and sizes and im just not a "matha-magician". Thanks .

skippy1969 - 2008-03-22 20:16

Which belt,or belts do you need Petey? There are three on the deck of your CS770. One main flat belt,"number 53 on the diagram".One fast forward + rewind belt for the takeup reels "number 52 on the diagram". And one tape counter belt"not picured". [URL=[URL=http://imageshack.us]

skippy1969 - 2008-03-22 21:30

It looks like the CS770,CS880 deck takes the same main drive belt as the CS660.It looks like it is a FBM 10.5.

petey.awol - 2008-03-23 07:45

If i'm getting it opened up, i'm going to replace all three.....so fbm 10.5, what else ... Confused

skippy1969 - 2008-03-23 08:36

Petey, you need to take out you old belts and follow the measurement instructions for the two smaller belts. simple belt measurement. If you can't figure it out,or your belts are totally junk. I'll have to take my 770 apart to find out, but please be patient as I won't have time yo check them until later this week when I'm off from work. Wink

petey.awol - 2008-03-23 08:54

good looks.
i'll figure em out. Was going to take the radio in somewhere with the belts in hand so i can just drop everything off. Dont know if the belts need fixing but the deck on the 770 is just crapped. So im betting its safe to say thats the problem.

skippy1969 - 2008-03-23 08:59

Yup,I'll bet the belts are the problem. Usually on the on logic controlled Aiwa decks the belt craps out while playing a tape and jambs the the play/record head carriage in the play position and traps the tape and makes the motor run all the time. it is really bad if the belts turn to a stick gooey mess the the motor usually burns out too. Roll Eyes Thats a worse case scenario though. Roll Eyes

petey.awol - 2008-03-23 11:22

If the motor is toast, then you know i will be on here crying to find a new one. Thanks for the heads up.

skippy1969 - 2008-03-23 14:47

You bet man, hopefully your motor is not junk. Keep us informed though. Wink

Thamks for your help much appreciated Smile

skippy1969 - 2008-03-26 15:10

Sure, your welcome. Just so you know I bought the belts from the people in the link. I ordered them last Saturday 3/22 on line, and I got them today 3/26. That is fast!!!!!! and the belt fit perfectly. The Aiwa CS600,CS660,CS770 and CS880 all take the FBM 10.5 for the main flat drive belt. I'm not sure on the tape counter and the ffwd and rewind countershaft belts.

dezdappa - 2008-07-30 12:58

Hi there again i finally got the belt changed a little slack but not as bad as i thought.Unfortunately things have got worse since i changed the belt, after doing so, i noticed when pressing play button the heads are not going up,neither rewinding or forwarding. If i push on the mechanism without the tape being in, it plays, its looking like an electronic problem but i could be wrong have you or anyone any suggestions???????

dezdappa - 2008-07-30 13:58

also forgot to mention that the motor still runs whilst the play button is not pressed in the play and rewind and forward are not engaging with the reels even though the button click into their normal position

skippy1969 - 2008-07-30 20:14

Sounds like the smaller idler belt may be slipping and the main belt might be slipping too. The belts need to be reasonably tight in order for the cassette to work correctly. Wink

dezdappa - 2008-07-31 02:25

really not sure if it is the idler belt as this is the one which goes around a large round metal wheel with the main belt drive. As i say the main belt has been changed and as the tape motor is running you can see it rotating even without any of the buttons being pressed in.If all attempts fail is there anywhere or anyone out there who would be able to fix this????

skippy1969 - 2008-07-31 15:56

Ok then, make sure the small microswitch that is located down in the lower part of the cassette mechanism near the cassette operation buttons. Check to see if the actuating bar that operates the microswitch when you press any of the buttons is sticking, that can cause all kinds of problems if it is sticky. Wink

dezdappa - 2008-08-01 08:18

I will check them, as i do remember seeing one or two of them, one for pause i think on the right handside of the function buttons and one on the left possibly, but there is also a black cylinder type switch at the back of the cassette mechansim on the right hand site with two red wires comming from it what is the purpose of that switch, as it seems to have a pole in the middle which moves up and down freely????

skippy1969 - 2008-08-01 10:47

Yes there is 2 micro switches one for turning the motor on in play and play/record and the other is for fastforward and rewind. The black cylinder is the auto kick/stop solenoid. It kicks the mechanism out of gear so to speak when you press stop or the cassette is done playing.

dezdappa - 2008-08-01 10:59

thanks for the diagram i will fiddle a bit more,i did check the micro switches and they dont seem to be sticking.its really mind boggling as when play or rewind or forward are pressed the tape heads are not moving up at all maybe i need to start looking at what controls this electronically as i get the impression that what ever controls the logic of this all has packed in, maybe a chip....?????if i push the play button and push the heads up into its position with my fingers it seems be ok but when i press stop and then play again the heads stay down and wont go up as they should. is there a chip that controls all of this??????

skippy1969 - 2008-08-01 12:35

It is very confusing, I have rebuilt a few of these Aiwa MD-3 tape mechanisms and they have a lot of springs and little parts that must be timed correctly and assembled correctly. If one little part does not line up or is broken,it throws all of it out of whack. The controls"IE" tape heads are not controlled by a chip, but a series of levers, springs and geared wheels that are activated in sequence for a certain function. The tape motor powers all of this, that is why belt tension on the main flat belt and the smaller idler belt are very important. If the belts slip the heads will not raise up correctly to the play/record position. Nod Yes

dezdappa - 2008-08-01 12:55

thanks for that info i have just noticed if i hold the mechanisim in my hand and press the play button alot harder than usual the heads raise up and play as they should but that is acessive force so possibly the mechanisim is out of line or something worn???. if i press the play in as you would normally then it doesnt raise the heads,so it is looking like a strip down but as you say these are a nightmare i dont think i am experienced enough to tackle this,i have also counted springs and cannot see any off maybe i should also be looking at the smaller belt as you never know it maybe stretched a bit??????? but working out thr ight size i would have to with your advise on measuring it

skippy1969 - 2008-08-01 13:16

It sounds like the actuating bar for the play function might be bent or out of adjustment. Here is a site that will tell you better than I could how to measure your belt. I have ordered belts from these people before and they are great! Big Grin Belt measuring

dezdappa - 2008-08-01 13:58

i have just think i may of found the problem the big metal wheel that the main belt and the rewind/forward belt goes around if i press on the back of the metal plate which would be the centre at the rear of that big metal wheel the play and rewind etc work ok,but i will not rule out the bent or out of line bar function bar.i notice there seem to be a bit of play where it moves back and forth should it be like this?????

dezdappa - 2008-08-01 16:40

managed to get it working thank god the plate which the motor is screwed to wasnt quite seated correctly which also pushes againtst that round metal wheel.I took the big metal wheel out which has the spindle on it but i also found three washers that came out 2 dark ones and one silver one.Can you confirm from any of your diagrams which order they were on the spindle????? and once again MANY.....MANY.....MANY....MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP ALL THE WAY, AS WE SAY HERE IN ENGLAND NUFF RESPECT TO YOU MY MAN, AND WILL BIG YOU UP EVERYTIME :-))))))))))))) THE DADDY OF THE AIWA CS-880

skippy1969 - 2008-08-01 21:38

Awesome!!!! I can't tell by my manuals which way the washers go,but I would say thee silver one is sandwiched between the darker ones. I'm glad I could help. Nod Yes Wink
