Are we talking about the RC-828 JW?  That is my favorite box in my collection!  Thing is built like a brick, serious power too!  I almost want to get another I like it so much..

I would say mine is real close to mint..

yep nice box very well made,iv got the urge to go and open mine up now and see if i can get it fired up as it seems to be a rated box

I have 4 or 5 of the 838 model jvc...

oh man, you'll know when it fires up!  I happened to spy mine in an Antique store when I was in Colorado a month ago, (wasn't even looking for a boombox) with a $20/ or Make Offer sticker on it.. Asked if I could try it out, luckily I was the only shopper in there because when I switched it to radio I was blastin the Antique store out when the volume was only up to 1.5 and it goes up to 10!  The lady working handed me a tape which played great too, I immediately said.... "oh, I'll pay $10 for it"  she said OK.

well you know that i have one 838 unopended NIB as we spoke on the telephone earlier today

I have a near-mint one, except for a couple of very mild dents on the top.  It has a few technical faults though.  Bass & treble sliders don't work, so they need to be rebuilt with new carbon trace contacts.  And the tape is slow and stops too soon, so it needs belts.  Also the toggle switches are fussy, so they need de-oxit.

I have never seen an 828 in mint condition. I had a minty 838, but, my 828 had a few dings in it.

I'm tempted to keep the 828 - it's so damn loud

It`s a damn good box, with solid tape keys. More solid, than the 838`s.

never seen an 838 in the flesh,i always wanted one but ended up with an 828

your right about the 828 build quaility litfan they are solid.

No deck door? Flippin eck ira, that`s a bit much. I still have the door sticker from mine, somewhere, along with, stickers for rx5500, rc-m90, rx5600, tpr990. Hope they turn up, one day.
