I am restoring a GF-575 E and would like if possible to change the operation panel, they are a bit tricky to remove but with a bit of patience it can be done.

Heat it with hair dryer, but gently, with care, and it will come off easily.

Hi Metad I have put an enquiry with them to see if they can still supply it and what colour it is (black or Silver)

I have gotten all the trim off the machine now, yes it is tricky but patience and a good broad flat screw driver got the job done 

Aha, I thought you need to remove only aluminum plate,

I never opened 575, and if it's possible to take off that whole plastic frame - it's better, cause you can get rid of that yellowish plastic, and replace it with silver one.

Just want to drift off topic  for a moment, does anyone know to use the APPS function...........buggerd if I know

When i eventually get it all back together i will try it out, ibt of a way to go yet, I have had one reply from one spares supplier saying they cant help, but another is putting out a search for a new operation panel, if i cannot get one ill to resort to paint and patience

I have now been told by the third spares supplier that the part is no longer available (annoys me when they ist all these parts and they are not available).

So i bought a complete machine off ebay in much better condition than mine so I can trnsfer bits and pieces from it to mine, i re-sprayed the cabinet on mine with "Honda Noble Silver" from Halfords which is as a closest match as i could see, i masked off the two raised sections where the power & waveband switches are and around the cassette buttons, and the colour match is acceptable.

Once i get it looking as a good as possible i will then upgrade the weedy power supply transformer and start replacing electrolytic capacitors in the audio signal path and do a bit of re-wiring.

hi i'm glad that someone else apart from me thinks the sharp psu is crappy,have you noticed when you give it some volume the power light starts dimming ? most of the sharp boxes do that..it must effect the sound ? what do you think ? if you do a mod on yours,let us know how it goes..i'de be interested to know..

I have already totally upgraded my GF-525 and it sounds so much better in all respects, you can turn it up without the sound falling apart at high volumes.

I always used to think it sounds good but it can sound better (same applies to all there other  machines) so i looked at the circuit diagrams and inside the machine and that was it my brain switched inot overdrive

The transformers i use are 6-0-6v 4 amp, the original looks to my eye about 1.5 or 2 amp, I get them from DBF Sound & Light Wharehouse, they also sell them on ebay they cost £9.30 including postage.

As regards the power supply i use a larger capacitor (4700 uf audio grade this is where it gets expensive), also any of the tiny wire links i replace with 1.5mm solid copper wire.

Then (yes there is more :-)....)

The audio output capacitors (1000uf 16v) i replace with

ELNA RFS SILMIC II 1000uf 25 or 35v capacitors (much fuller sweeter sounding)

I also re-wire the speakers with 42 strand speaker cable, from the pcb to the connector pcb, ignore the puny speaker connector pins and solder the speaker leads straight on to the board.

The if you feeling really wealthy you can replace all the audio section caps again with ELNA RFS SILMIC II capacitors, i get mine from a seller in sweden fast delivery and reasonable prices.

All this is alot of work which i spread out over time but it is all worth it

The power supply just about fits but you have to fix it to the board, i did it by first using some double sided tape just to get the transformer in the correct position and then soldering 1.5 mm solid wire onto the board long enough so you can cut the wires as they come out of the transformer and solder them to the ends of the solid core wires do it nice and tight and there are no problems of the board moving around.

There is a lot of drilling and fiddling about to get some of these parts to fit but as i am not working i have the time

Obviously each manufacturer will save money with various compromises and power supplies are definately where Sharp save money

I will try and open up the 525 and take some pictures i know these help.

But if you take this on and blow it up dont blame me :-)

Wow that sounds good !!! yes i would love to see the insides of the modded sharp..i was always convinced that sharp could be better,i have most of my sharp because they look nice,but sound "ok"..the GF9500,GF700,GX300,GF999 sound nice,but the GF575,GF990,GF9000 i've always thought look beautifull but just dont pack that punch that i would love it to have..plus the speakers are only low wattage,the ohms is only 3.2,some i have even seen 2.8ohm,i think for them to sound decent they would have to be at least 4ohm,i've done a few speaker mods in the sharp boxes myself and that alone can improve the sound alot..but i just dont like the way the power light goes dim when i turn the volume up..it craps out and cant take it..

i have done a psu mod on both my GF999s and GF 535,they came from japan and were 100v,i desoldered the 100v ones and fitted a 240v,it was great once it was done..and the boxes handle it perfect

Well worth the effort then good  its always good to get results for your efforts.
