Hi Everyone, hope u all had a good Christmas. Does anybody know where i can get hold of Original/Replacements. woofers & passive Radiator for a Aiwa cs880. And if i wanted to upgrade the woofers what type or brand would i get for a better Sound quality.
skippy1969 - 2012-12-26 19:39
The woofers that are in the CS880/CS-J88 are very good quality.
What is wrong with yours?
If the foam is deteriorated they can be refoamed to good as new quality.
The bass radiator can be rebuilt as long as you have the outer ring and the center flat radiator.

I heard that changing the woofers with Sony ones gives a better sound quality, do u own one, if i get a CS-J88 will the Voltage and radio frequency be compatible with UK specs
skippy1969 - 2012-12-26 19:48
Yes I own a Aiwa CS880 E
Like I said the tuner on the CS-J88 only goes up to 92 mhz.
The CS880 goes to 108 mhz,so you won't get all the Fm stations above 92 mhz.
The voltage on the CS-J88 is only 100 volts,so no it won't work on UK 220 voltage.

Whats the difference between an Aiwa cs880 H,U,E models?

Whats the difference between an Aiwa cs880 H,U,E models?
The H,U,E and there is a K model as well.
Those are the different versions sold in different markets in the world.
I've had a U,and an H version and currently have a E version from a member in Germany
The U and H versions have two radio bands Am and Fm and a normal RCA jack type phono/line in.
The E and K versions were sold in Europe and have three radio bands LW,AM.FM and use a RCA jack Phono in and a D.I.N. style plug for line in.
The input and output watt ratings are different between the different models as well.
There are probably more differences, but these are the ones I know about.

Yeah, i got some dude from Germany who says he has one but wants 350€ for it, he also says it needs work done, new belts for the Cassette player, Speakers need re foaming and needs Aerials, what do u think?
glen - 2012-12-26 20:43
Sounds like the (E and K) one sold in Europe is a lot better than the U,H ones.
u said a D.I.N style, would that be a 5 pin DIN?
skippy1969 - 2012-12-26 21:53

Yes I just paid $450.00 U.S for my Aiwa CS880E from Germany.
It needed.
Woofers refoamed and bass radiator rebuilt.
Stereo bias adjusted.
Complete deck service "belts lubed and adjusted.
Both antennas.
Now working 100%
So I think the price he is asking is fair, considering how rare they are.
It just depends how bad you want one and what your abilities are.
This is my third CS880 and I've worked on them all.
This is my latest the CS880E.

I wouldn't say the E and K are better.
They use and put out a few more watts, but I don't really notice any difference in sound quality or loudness compared to the U and H models I've had in the past.
The E and K have the 5 pin DIN plug for the line in.

lol, my abilities, well i haven't repaired one before but ill most probably watch a youtube vid, there must be a geek out there somewhere were i can learn something from. Ive learnt so much just by joining this forum alone.
It seems like the most general problem people get with buying an old Cassette player like this is to re foam the speakers, get new belts for the cassette deck & get a new aeiral apart from that everything else seems ok.
Btw your machine looks good. u say this is your 3rd, what do u do with them? fix them up then sell them on?
skippy1969 - 2012-12-27 06:33
Yes I fix them, but the other CS880's i had were traded to members here on Stereo2go and on Boomboxery forums.

Hi Glen,
I was lucky enough that I was talking to Deliverance about 880's a while ago and he put me in touch with Stereo Mad and I bought one of his. I now learn that my machine was previously Radio Raheem's so these things move around a bit. There have been several that I have wanted during this year and on Ebay there were lots of cool machines available in the UK earlier this year at reasonable prices. Later in the year things went a bit mad as regards prices and less were available. I recommend patience and you will find what you seek, at a price that suits you; these things have their ups and downs.
You only have to read some of the stories about rare machines turning up in unlikely places to give you more hope that what you want is out these somewhere. Nothing worthwhile is going to drop straight in your lap without effort but perseverence (or bottomless pockets) is the key. When it comes to purchases from overseas I think 'nerves of steel' are required too!
Good luck.
glen - 2012-12-27 10:59
Yeah Nick your so right, patients is the key for sure, ive been hit up by 2 dudes so far one in the states the other in Germany, the one in the states has 2 cs-j88 models the other dude in Germany has a cs-880 model, the cs-j88 only runs off 100v so i'd have to get an adapter, well thats no big deal but the Radio frequency only goes up to 90mhz whereas the European model starts from 87.5 - 108mhz so if i get the cs-j88, id have to change the Radio board. id rather have a cs-880U,H,E,K model. i've come to realise that there isn't much difference between the two. look below.

i don't see why the radio frequency range is bothering you too much here Glen?
remember the digital switch over is on the cards so will render the tuner section on analogue radios useless.
having said this.....best of luck in acquiring a beaut of a box which is the 880
