Back when Cutra was new to this site, he posted a 3D30 for sale, and I bit. I didn't know Cutra very well (except for looking at his eBay feedback as "cutra*," which was/is flawless). But I took a chance, both because Cutra's PM's were friendly, personal, open and honest, and (of course) because the 3D he was selling was a stunner: new-in-the-box, with all the original paperwork, accessories and grille sticker. I mean, who could resist this baby...

...huh?!

I'm glad I took the chance. The boombox arrived yesterday and is "as advertised." Shipping from Canada to the U.S. was fast (well, as fast as you can get from Canada Post), packing was superb, and communication was frequent, helpful and friendly. Cutra even sent the tracking number. What more could a boombox addict like me ask for?!?

And so, thanks, Cutra, for a smooth/easy/fast/enjoyable transaction and for a first-class 3D30. I think isolator42 (our resident 3D expert) would be proud of me!

BB --do these old but NEW boxes you buy , have some kind of crisp, clean 'brand new' sound --

I like to get high on the plasticky smell.

And then there's (seriously) the thrill of buying something pristine. Like buying a new suit or a new washer-dryer or a new car. Hand-me-downs and thrift store deals get the job done, provided they're in good shape and have been maintained, but new ones are bright and fresh and unblemished. And (most of the time) they work. There's no need to try to figure out where the "as is" is hiding. Plus, they come with lots of fun add-ons, like stickers and instruction books and boxes and tags and demo tapes.

Maybe most fun of all, though, is that buying old/new stock is like being transported in time. For a few serene minutes, I feel like I'm "back in the day" and have just picked out a new toy from a store shelf. It's nostalgic and exhilarating all at the same time!

Seems like I misunderstood your last post. You've got a good question there!

Unfortunately, I don't have any new/old pairs of boomboxes to test that. It certainly seems possible that deterioration and wear could change how a boombox sounds over time.

Of course, a boombox could deteriorate just as easily sitting unused its original box for 30 years! In addition, two of the same model boombox could sound slightly different from the get-go, thanks to subtle differences in build, the same way that cars that come off the same assembly line often turn out different.

Then again, given the general lack of sensitivity of my hearing, I probably wouldn't notice any of that, anyway. The truth is, I buy boxed boomboxes for the reasons I've already mentioned and not for any hope that they'll "sound new."

somehow -- i was hoping that a brand new old box --might sound like live percussion --
for the first 10 minutes ,till the new woofs and tweets 'broke in'

I'm as honest as they come!

Last year I had also found a brand new sony box that I had bought for my father in law. He used it for about 3 days and now it's back in my possession.
Maybe someone will be interested in it.
I will post it soon.
