6 Total. 4 discrete LED's to illuminate the dial. 2 SMD LED's on kapton ribbon illuminates the meters and bleed through to simultaneously illuminate the tape counter too.

Here are the two SMD's above the meter. You need to look close to see them as they are very small and are mounted on a ribbon glued below the dial and above the meters.

Wow, that does look factory, very discreet! Was that ribbon already there, or did you add it? Was there originally nothing but an empty gap along the edges of the tuner scale?

The gap was there. All the LED's were added including the ribbon. The LED's were chosen based on where they were mounted. I felt that the discrete LED's on the sides would be better but to illuminate the meter required a very thin illumination source and so standard LED's were out of the question on the meters and thus the ribbon mounted SMD led's were chosen. The colors matched, although the operating voltage of the two different varieties were different so they are powered differently. The meter LED's had stepped down current from a resistor array but the discretes were sensitive to voltage fluctuations depending on whether battery or AC operation and flickered when boombox is pounding hard, so those are powered by a custom made adjustable voltage regulator. So the brightness can be controlled by adjusting the regulator. A hidden switch was also installed to allow the boombox to be operated with or without the LED's to conserve power during battery operation. With the regulator installed, the LED's no longer flicker regardless of AC/DC or how hard the boombox is driven, as the voltage source is rock steady.

And those led's are vitually immortal, right? At least compared to old school incandescents. I usually prefer the "warm" look of incandescents, but can't stand it when they burn out.
